Many themed topics are object oriented, time to do something light oriented ;D
Please show us your favourite backlit images, here's a few of mine.
Of course this one had to be my opening shot with three of the four amigos in one shot ;D

Hi Børge, only one of your images is showing properly, they others are 0kb.
That one image is very nice btw, thanks for posting.

Fons, moody light is the main subject in these series of topics, I don't care what that light source is.
With backlit images the main light source is coming from behind the subject rendering the subject black (as in out of DR range) or lit with subtle and moody reflective light.
Your first image with the chairs in the church nails it, in your second image you completely killed the mood by lifting the shadows to normal light levels.
Here's a similar image where the light was trying to make its way into the alley enhancing the tunnelling effect of the small alley.

Backlit, surrounding light low, subject not blackened but translucent. Does that match the thread subject?
#19 is great, translucent plus black spectre, a lot of details, gradual light changes and local contrast.
#18 gives me to think about the fading center.

Sheer luck :)
Was doing my usual stuff of shooting animal portraits of animals sitting in a spot of sunlight against a shadow background when he decided to look up and open his beak. Kept focussed on getting the shots I did envision so completely forgot about this image, once home I was pleasantly surprised when I found it ;D

Ok I think this qualifies as backlit. Though many dismiss the 105mm VR as not ideal for macros, I find it makes quite a good med-tele.
The challenge for you dear viewer, is to come up with an explanation of what was happening here

I wouldn't normally have considered this as backlit, but I think a wider interpretation is being taken by some in this thread so....

I love attempting BIF but in the uk, sunlight & clouds conspire to give such changing light levels that many of my birds taken against the sky are often burned out, or too underexposed.

Might introduce a few more "Master of Light" topics to give more light oriented images a podium, there's so much to discover and learn about light which makes this hobby so fascinating :)
Here's a few more from me, hope you guys like them.
The first one is a special image btw for personal reasons, on the old NG forum somebody called the original version "pedestrian" while back then I thought it was the best I could do. I got insulted and very very angry by the comment but a few days later had to admit he was right. Locked myself up for a weekend and learned everything there was to know about processing NEF's in CNX2 with the mindset "I'll show the MoFo what I can do". When I think back about the event its too funny but it gave a huge boost to my processing capabilities and laid the foundation of what I now know about processing RAW images. I forgot who he was but I'm eternally grateful for being so blunt about my work ;D ;D

I do think a sincere critique is positive. It takes courage to do a negative one, even if with good constructive intentions, even more to really accept it.

I fully agree, went for a canoeing trip in Finland in 2004 and kind of fell in love with Scandinavia.
Back then I had no idea what light was other than that I needed some to photograph, quickly looked at the images taken with the Minolta A2 during that trip but there's sadly not one I liked based on the current knowledge of photography (my goodness I sucked back then).

Beautiful sky, the sailboat really makes the photograph.

Thanks, all!
Akira, I still have that Nikon D40x. It is now an infrared camera 720nm. Here is backlit shot from last year with that 9 year-old D40x:

Thor, thanks for another image. The B&W treatment looks nice, but, given the prominent foliage in the center, your usual color IR film simulation should work great.

Nice suggestion of film noir, although the gun's silhouette seems very modern.
-
The pattern did actually come from a scratchy Ikea table top glass, lighted from top by an Ikea table lamp :)
The gun was not even a fake one. I cut it from a paper sheet and keep it a quarter inch above the table to create the 3D illusion.
Cheers,
Zang

This is an unbelievably precise juxtaposition of the dawn sky, clouds and the trees. Fantastic capture!

Many thanks Akira! I agree - the timing was really in my favour. In several ways actually. I was on an stroll in the dusk - last two strolls I had first forgotten the camera and second time forgotten to load the memory card... :o

This thread needs some TLC. I don't have a great image, just one from the archives when i was practising flash lighting.

I like your light and image, Hans.

Keith, Bent, John and Akira - many thanks for your comments :)
I'm glad you like shot with the birds gathering on the wires - there were quite many in the air, but I waited for this shot with a smaller group of flying birds to leave some room for other elements in the picture ;D

Øivind - great captures. I especially like the first one.

Thanks Hans for the enthusiastic comment. I would agree that the first one is closest to the Phoenix bird theme.

Been going trough my images lately to see which tele range I was using most, might as wel repost some older images in the themed topics as I don’t travel that much anymore lately.
