Title: [Theme] The yummy thread...(food photography)
Post by: rosko on February 20, 2016, 20:27:31
The following images were made to feed Frank's critique thread.

He suggested to create a new one, hence this thread about food photography.

Your pictures will be more important than food itself, though.

Exifs (I mean camera, lens used, f/stop, iso, shutter speed, lighting, tripod and so on...) will be appreciated.

Don't hesitate to post yours... ;)

Below, stuffed vegetable, before go to the oven, and then after baking.

Hm. I love filled veggies. Prepare them from time to time. Nice idea to use different veggies.

Very natural colors. I feel the colorful dishes concur with the food colors.

Colin & Andy: Wonderful tasty food pics, really touch me. Thank you.

All: in the Netflix series "Chef's table" current state of the art food photography is presented, esp. when it comes to competent lighting and arrangement of food. Styling today is a combination of natural look,  influenced by light and the presentation of ingredients in recognizable form plus artistic staging.

Went to the Slovakian mountains shortly after the NG safari of 09 to shoot some wolves and bears but only found some footprints and processed wildlife. Luckily the company, scenery and the local delicacies made up for the lack of predators.

Our dinner, a lamb, being dissected afters being slow grilled for 6 hours.

Andy, do you get to taste all of them?  :P
Furtunately and unfortunately the answer is: yes :)

My daughter is "only" doing this as a personal hobby. The family and friends are "needed" to enjoy then the outcome of her creativity and the taste of her handcraft. I can tell you, that sometimes it is really though :)

My wife and her friends love cooking as well.
On one side it is nice to have so many excellent cooks around, but you can imagine the downside of it as well ;)
(But it is a good excuse to sneak around in the kitchen and claiming "I am just taking photographs" :D)

Andy, I'd happily eat that king prawn dish.

Anthony, love the promise hinted at with your roast chicken & red cabbage. And spooky that the canteen in the office where I work actually served this combination up for Tuesday lunchtime! But I'm willing to bet that your ones tasted 10x better :)

Elsa, do you use that fish image as a logo on your website, or FB page? I know I've seen it before and love the clarity, the comedy of the fish and the great contrast with the red background. But I want to know what they looked & tasted like after they'd been cooked!

Very colorful shots, Frank, with details like the pattern on beetroot slices !

I noticed you use close up framing which makes the watcher ''entering the dish'' and I think is a good way. I like it.

I recently made two ''fars bretons'' (breton= from Brittany) : one with prunes an rum, another with raspberries and vanilla extract...

Perfect with a ''Vendanges tardives '' (late harvest) which was a nectar ! :P

Still with the Df+Zeiss 35mm f/2 ZF2, and SB900.

Francis: In the first of two I like the idea of cutting one piece of each and creating a form parallel.

If I might say so, the light distribution is uneven and the BG is distracting, a second I prepare a little edit for you.

More subtle is the following: Try to adjoin with the perfect griping position, m,ake the person feel she or he can just grab (and wants to grab). It is all about walking round the subject and finding the right height and distance.

The old shots I showed above are not about design, they are only about lighting. Lighting should make the structures pop out to give the viewer "a mouth feeling" of the subject. Let them feel the texture...

Very quick & dirty....

are you left handed?

For a right handed person #1 looks much more inviting, for a left handed person #2 & I did some tonality plus cropping to make it more appealing in my eyes.

What do you think?

Hi Francis, those look great - any chance you could deliver to the UK?!

Frank, that's an interesting observation.
Guess you'd say that since the majority of people are R Handed, choose #1 (or have one of each?)

That's a clever suggestion ! I will try it in the future.

As for the lighting, I have noticed that is uneven. I may need some white screan to improve lighting.

About the messy BG, I didn't want to crop the image, but I should probably have done it. ???

Cheers, Francis.

ColinM. I shoot food for a living since 2006, but only very rarely post customer files here. And if, rejects.

About right/left ... yes. If I do not positively know my customer base is biassed to the left handed side. You are right.

I often find myself rearranging (and sometimes even cleaning) customer places to make them more appealing on a photo....

Light is most important, but arrangement aka "styling" is very important too..

No I think I've worked out Francis' layout.

I'm quite happy to hold my wine glass in my right hand, so using the left for the Fars Breton wouldn't be a problem.
Prunes & rum you say....?

Great quality photography & lighting Bjorn. And I'd happily order these in a restaurant.
The various plates & serving dishes really add to the presentation too.

For me, the placement of the spring onions on the foremost claw in the last image makes me smile (in my mind it's changed it into a sea creature with a pair of green goggles on its head!). I think I must have been working too hard today.....

New Burger in town  ;)
Some years ago I tried to get a handle on Food photography, bought some books and was getting hints from some very good Photographers.   Complete failure and was relieved of my assignment to do the photos for a cookbook  ;)

Yesterday many parts of North Goa were without electricity from 0900 -1700 so we went to a friend's new restaurant (he was a lucky one with electricity , meaning Air Conditioning  ;) ) .
a7II, Loxia 50 f2 handheld.

With so many superb images in this thread, this is pretty shabby but the Burger was very good  :)  My wife's Mezza , in BG was excellent.   The new Belgian (Indian version) beer, Bira, on tap was ice cold .  I do not think I will get any more assignments... lol
Just a little light relief from Gear Talk, a 35mm would have been better but only had the 50mm and a 75mm with me.

I like the thin slices of pickled ginger too.
And this year, I've grown the Shiso herb that I think they use to flavour it & give the pink colour

I find the spiciness of ginger as good and sometime preferable to that of too many chillies.
I made some Kimchi using home grown ginger that was so fresh it oozed juice as I grated it - its flavour was very nice :)

Ok you really piqued my interest here now.
I don't know if this is something about the culture of people in the Netherlands but a Dutch friend (Peter Den Dekker) used to make Tempeh in the 80's. He found one answer to the incubator problem by using old fridges (for the insulation & easily cleaned surfaces) and a single old-style 40W lightbulb to give just enough background heat!

I love Tempeh and much prefer it to the taste and texture of Tofu

From a quick Google, it seems Natto shares some similarities....and some differences with Tempeh

Final question for anyone who knows:
What are your favourite uses for Shiso herb?

Pointless!

I love Sencha, but always seem to run out.

I think the Puerh you're describing is the fermented type (makes a darker brown tea). I really like that type.
The "raw" one in the pic isnt fermented & produces a much lighter brew that can have more subtle flavours

Gosh Richard, that's amazing!
I think you may have ended up with something far more beautiful and valuable than you intended.

If it's any consolation, I got a layer of mould on one of my tomato ferments. The material below was unaffected and pretty potent.
Just in case Akira's reading, I must mention my experiment trying to ferment English plums
I love Umeboshi plums, so when a friend gave me some ordinary local plums, I tried out salt fermentation (following a similar process to that used by the Japanese).
The end result is piquant and potent. But basically deep purple (from the Shiso herbs) so not very photogenic
