Post by: Danulon on January 19, 2016, 00:03:39

I am just checking flights and Glasgow-flights seem to be very rare. So I think about switching to Edinburgh too.

I'll talk to Anthony, then we would use a car as a group of 3.

Thanks for starting this thread, Gunther - I was intending to do it but hadn't quite got there yet.

I'll start a separate thread for arrivals in Glasgow; certainly any trans-Atlantic members will land there and perhaps others.

I will also be available with my car, on the day of arrivals, to help collect people from either airport; or in cases of dire necessity, both airports ( they are only about one hour's drive apart). It is also possible to use public transport to get to Killin and later I will post details, timetables etc, for both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Dave, are we likely to need cars with off-road abilities?

Anthony - it's not a necessity but could come in useful, perhaps . . . . not being an off-roader myself, I'm not very aware of the potential round here. But put it this way - I've lived here for over 12 years and have never felt the need. I believe, also, there are tight restrictions now (generally) on just where you can take an off-road vehicle . . . you have to stick pretty much to roads, or to least established tracks - no horsing around over virgin countryside.

On a related note - there is a 10- or 12-seater Landrover available to rent from our local 'Rover dealer. Erik was pretty enthusiastic the last time I mentioned this - I think it is £80 per day - not much when split between a number if people. Anyone who thinks this is a good idea and would want to be part of it, let me know.

Yes, I agree, Frank. I have no position on this, it's just available if a sufficient number of people want it.

I'm arriving on Monday and will drive with my own car (Amsterdam - Newcastle - Killin).
Until when the cabins are available? Saturday?

I can always take passengers with me, but I'll take the ferry on Sunday night.

I am just checking that an Astra is 201,80€ for the whole time...

I am open to other proposals of transportation Edinburgh-Killin, too.
Up to now just a few people piped up here.
Frank and Anthony, if you happen to arrive at a similar time, I'd gladly team up with you. I didn't book any car yet.

On the other hand there is the matter of getting back to the airport.
Frank, you mentioned that you'd like to return on Sunday 15th. My plane will leave already on Saturday.
So we'd have to find different arrangements for the trip back to Edinburgh.

Cheers,
Günther

I did not book yet because, FRANKLY, I did not understand the baggage regulation.

Mine said: "23 Kilogramm, 1 piece of luggage"

My own want is: "On piece of luggage, cabin only"

So If I can haul a 23 kilo piece of gear and clothing into the cabin I am happy. But I do not really believe that will happen.

I might still bring people to Edinburgh on Saturday and spend the rest of the day plus the following morning there!

The 23 kg is checked luggage.
Title: Re: Scotland: sharing a ride from Edinburgh to Killin?
Post by: Thomas Stellwag on January 20, 2016, 00:41:06
@ Frank: 23kg is the max mass for 1 piece of package  in freight room of the plane, if you have more (mass or units), you pay extra
cabin baggage is max 8kg

about cars:  my preferred way would be coming by ferry and car to see a bit of UK - I am not shure if my time shedule will allow it,
it is exhibition time in construction industry
if i come by plane  i would share a car, arrival most probably saturday 7 and departure sunday 15 from/to Edinburg
i think more than 3 people in a std car ist too much (3 people, 4 wheels, 5 opinions....), so better  taking 2 smaller cars
if we shall share 2 Landies, my license is up to 9 people in Germany, no idea how they count in feet and inches
the Landy might be our castle if Nessi shows up and the bear is occupied with chipping

8 kilo is not much. Camera gear plus clothing....

Does the regulation mean 23kg checked plus one piece of cabin 8kg?

how do I transport tripods?

Yes, 23 kg checked and one cabin bag of 8 kg.  I often carry extra items in large pockets in a jacket or photographers vest.  On an internal flight in South Africa they weighed my camera (D3s/24-70), but apart from that I have never had cabin baggage weighed, so providing it does not look too large, there is unlikely to be a problem (but there is always a first time!).

I pack my tripod in my checked baggage.  23 kg is a lot of baggage and I really do not want to carry something larger than that.

I plan to be in Edinburgh Airport around 13:30 on 7 May, and to be back there around midday on 14 May.  I have not yet decided between plane and train.  Frank and I have already agreed to meet there, and others are welcome.  I am happy to deal with the car rental and to drive.  We have not yet decided on the vehicle, we can probably manage to have four people (including the driver) in one car, although three would be a little easier.  I am not so keen on a larger vehicle;  extra cars would be easier, and this would give us more flexibility once we are in Killin.

It would be helpful if people could provide their transport details so that a comprehensive list can be drawn up and we can work out how best to allocate transfers to Killin.

Arrival at 13:05 local time EDI on 7/May/2016 is the plan for me now.

Who wants to do a 24-hour-photo-tour of Edinburgh with me?

I will now try to find accommodation for the night 14 to 15/May/2016

anything recommended?

Frank - just to point out - Edinburgh is only about 1.5 hours' drive from Killin, so it is easily possible to make a day-trip from Kilin, especially if you get an early start.

I usually bring either a Pelicase 1510 or a LowePro Backpack as carry on and I bring a Billingham or Nikon Photo vest, in case they weigh my bag, I can empty the bag more or less into the vest and put the camera with a big lens over the shoulder.

The Gitzo series 5 comes apart into; Ball head, three legs and the crown so they fit inside the check in 1560 Pelicase

I like a more versatile machine, a Landrover or Range Rover if costs are not too high. I prefer good food & wine over cars. Cars shall be useful, food shall be tasteful, wine shall be wonderful and I will be greatful.

I will also likely arrive in Edinburgh in the early afternoon of Saturday 7th.
From what I see, there is one German group already, can I join them or do we rent a second car?

To go back, I would be interested to spend the night from Saturday 14th to Sunday in Edinburgh to visit the city and would be willing to share a room with one of you. Or we do it during our week, that's also fine.

Apart from the fact that Anthony is from London, Günther is from Vienna and Germany did not win the last war .... the car is --- äh --- German?

Haha, I hope the car is neutral.

Maybe we can rent a van instead of several small cars? I don't know what's cheaper -- I have only ever rented small cars in my life -- but I would guess that a big single car is cheaper in every respect. Thomas's van was quite convenient when we travelled around in Southern Germany two years ago.

Maybe it's time to start another list - for those arriving in Edinburgh on the 7th who want to car-share. So far I have:

Frank
Danulon
Simsurace
Thomas
Erik?
Anthony

nfoto is also arriving in Edinburgh but hasn't yet said how he plans to reach Killin.

Chris is travelling from home in his own car and may be able to collect a couple of members from Edinburgh.

So far there is no-one planning to fly into Glasgow.

As I have posted elsewhere, I will be available to pick anyone who can't be squeezed into a rental vehicle.

I have rented a Passat Estate (or similar) and arranged carry Thomas, Frank and Danulon.  That is a full load.  My BA flight arrives at 13:05, Thomas is a bit earlier, and the other are around the same time as me.

The advantage of several vehicles is that it gives more flexibility once we are in Killin, so that everybody does not have to go to the same place at the same time.

Regarding cars, please consider that I will have my own, a large estate, while I am there (I leave Wednesday to go home).
I will however be unable to give people a  lift from airports, as I will likely drive up Friday night and camp one night on Loch Tay to do (weather permitting) a photography hike the next morning.

As I said on ''Scotland NG Gathering 2016: Projects'' thread, I am 95% sure I will come with my car.

My normal route (from south England would pass through Glasgow.

As there is nobody landing at Glasgow airport so far, I wouldn't mind to go through Edinburgh airport if needed.

I can get 2 passengers with their luggage.
