The tree looks like a Tamarix - no idea about the bird though.

It indeed is a Tamarix, and the shot is taken in Southern France the Rhone-Delta also known as Camarque. There are no other trees instead of these bushy growing trees thats why the heron species there are breeding in rather low heights. Camargue hosts 9 heron species (in addition to the ever present Flamingos)

And the english name of the bird species is "Little egret", in german "Seidenreiher"

I made a detour to Vienna last June after a week in Slovenia with the other crew members, would have been nice to finally meet up :)

If you haven't seen it, there's an interesting thread here on the 200-500mm started by Mongo that might tempt you if you haven't already invested in one.

I have seen there is a 200-500 thread here, and I have read Mongos contribution on the "other site", the only thing i have read there since a long period of time. I did a short try of this lens at my vendor
it is tempting but currently I don't think it is the right one for me, because I am searching whether something is fitting in between the 200-400/4VR and the 70-300VR I already have. For lightweight travel issue (and still some bird capability) and when I dont want to take big glass with me the 70-300 currently is the lens of choice for me. Having better quality and range but keeping limited weight and size would be fine, for that purpose the 200-500 is too big and too close to the 200-400, maybe the 80-400 is the better option for that. Decision will be made next year
