Autumn is now in full bloom. I took a set of wonderful images in the forest yesterday, AND: I want to see yours.
If you live heads down (**ggg**) you can fill these pages with your pictures when we are hit by spring next year and we Northerners will continue next year and so on.

Some nice autumn shots Frank.
I was out in the fog and rain a few days ago. In the forest it was misty and colors not so intense - more silent autumn shots.

Great idea Frank. Nice shots already.
This is one from a series 'Autumn in the City'; the city is not so visible here but it's in Wilhelminapark, in the middle of the city.

The leather-like small leaves of the Dwarf Birch (Betula nana) turning copper red heralds the advance of autumn in the Norwegian mountains.
-
Impressive one, Bjørn.
Lot's of 'autumn' and color in one part of a leaf...
-
Wow, great images, great colour here.
Some of mine, during a holiday weekend (week ago), couldn't go anywhere because kid ill, around the little holiday house.
-
Stunning shots all over, really impressive. The "leather-like" is probably my favorite of all so far but very hard to choose. I sadly can't really compete with such high standards - I must get out and shoot more! Here's my humble picture.

Nowhere in Norway can the mountain autumn colours be more intense than in the inland valley Dørålen. Often the first snow further adds contrast and impact to the landscape.
Yellows and oranges are mainly Mountain Birch and its hybrids, while the intense red is chiefly Mountain Bearberry Arctostaphylos alpinus.
Use a long lens and early grazing morning light and the success is secured.
-
Bjørn, this is a most spectacular combination of colour patches and tones. I love the blues, and the bright red patch of the bearberry somehow serves to highlight all of the colour patches. Great stuff.

Want some fruit?
-
This is from Dovre, another range in the Norwegian Central Mountains that is less dry than Dørålen (shown in an earlier post). Thus the alpine zone has richer and more luxuriant vegetation, here dominated by Dwarf Birch, Mountain Birch, Juniper, Common and Bog Bilberry, Willows, Trailing Azalea, and Bearberry. For a short time in autumn, usually peaking in the third week of September, they together form a variegated mosaic of autumn colours. A dusting of snow at higher altitudes adds to the firework display.
-
The Mountain Bearberry Actostaphylos alpinus turns red in autumn. Very very red. In fact so intense red that neither film nor digital photography can fully do its amazing foliage justice. The colour simply blows away any colour space gamut you attempt to use. This leads in turn to all details of the leaves being blocked and lost in the intense colour.
-
Wonderful responses. Love them. Keep them coming.

A lot can be told about events of the autumn without presenting details at all. For example, alder (Alnus spp.) don't change their foliage colours until the leaves dry up and fall off. As they have a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixating bacteria via root nodules, they don't need to transfer valuable chlorophyll substances into the roots for winter storage.
Here I exemplify the difference by showing Alnus incana foliage against a Silver Birch in the background. By using a long lens (800mm) set off focus, everything is thrown wildly out of the sharpness plane, so just the colour patches and pattern persist.

Checked the tiffs before converting to jpeg, downsized in 2 steps, show no issues on exposures, so i dont know Frank?!

It's so warm here now, 19 degrees Celsius at the moment, the Rhododendron started flowering again, which gives an extra color this autumn. (Which was already very colorful)
-
I've been watching this bough for the past five weeks or so taking pictures along the way. It finally has changed to its most brilliant plumage. This Japanese Maple drops its leaves almost all at once so with a frost forecast for tonight the tree may be inclined to shed its coat. The first picture was taken on October 1, the second an hour ago.
-
Tom, these are so delicate!
-
The pair of them are exquisite. Would make a great wall decoration printed to the same size and hung adjacent to each other.
-
Few weeks old and wet...
-
Thank you Akira and Bjorn for your kind words.
Bjorn, hanging adjacent images is an excellent idea, and I appreciate you suggesting it. I'll have to rework the raw files to make them compatible in size but that should be relatively straightforward.

Tom, they're indeed exquisite!
Andrew, that last one could pass for the haunted forest :)

Amazing fireworks of color. I'm always fascinated by how similar those Northern landscapes look to our Alpine ones, at roughly 2300-2600m elevation.

Thank you. Indeed, although I shot it in manual I was probably about 1.5 stops below what matrix metering suggested. I usually don't bother trying to expose to the right in shots like this when I know I won't lift the shadows and keep a lot of black areas in the frame.
-
"I'm always fascinated by how similar those Northern landscapes look to our Alpine ones, at roughly 2300-2600m elevation. "
Simone: their physiognomy and structure are identical. The tree line drops towards the higher latitudes and sooner or later it reaches the sea level. Then the tundra takes over in shaping the landscape.

Mike, both (fisheye?) images looks very nice, but I particularly like the first one: the exaggerated perspective and the sun-star work greatly.
-
The perspective is not exaggerated at all, but the geometry is not rectilinear.
To beat a dead horse yet again, perspective is set by the distance from the camera to the subject. Not the lens.

Oh, thanks for the correction. I remembered you had talked about that in the article "Format Conversion" on your legacy website...

Frank and Akira - thanks for your comments.
Akira - yes, Nikon AI 16/3.5. I bought it recently and really like it.
-
The Fisheye-Nikkor 16/3.5 is fantastic for its "sun star" capability. For people unfamiliar with this lens, it is also critically important to keep the front element immaculately clean if you shoot into the sun (applies to all short focal lenses so nothing particular for the 16 mm).

Actually I was just test shooting a couple of 105 Nikkors on my garden deck, but this capture of Parthenocissus (with an old Sonnar-type 105/2.5) has survived the passage of time. Could equally well be put into the Minimalistic Image thread, I'd guess.

Fallen autumn foliage of Downy Birch (Betula pubescens) floating on the surface of an acid bog lake. The submerged vegetation is all Sphagnum moss, which thrives under these highly acidic conditions (pH 3.5 in this case).
A side effect of the acid precipitation is when the acid makes humic substances precipitate to leave crystalline clear water. All fish and most of the aquatic animal life will disappear simultaneously, so the clarity costs the ecosystem dearly.
This photo was acquired end of September at a time first snow already had fallen and the lake surface was about to freeze over. Light levels were extremely low and even more so under water, so the tripod-mounted Nikonos with its 15 mm f/2.8 UW-Nikkor lens exposed the scene for several minutes. Keeping myself motionless in the ice cold water for such exposures was a challenge, but the outcome might be worth the efforts. I did have to repeat a number of times though due to floating foliage being shifted by air currents.
-
Doesnt willow, Salix create a similar effect, salicyl acid, aspirine.
-
Acid precipitation in the Nordic countries is chiefly the result of airborne pollutants (sulphur dioxide and Nox) from the UK and Continental Europe.
Salicylic acid might clear one's head, but not the water.
-
The shot was worth the dive!

grey is also a common color on Autumn -- "women in green jacket"

After the heavy storms we had it is perhaps the end of Autumn?

One of the last leaves on our Japanese Maple. Tomorrow it will be on the ground.

The joys of wineable nights are over and darkness prevails, even in the mornings.

Today a Malbec would suit sufficiently well.
The pedestrian crossing sign is my favorite though.
When on the road common signs are a popular by catch to me.
This is very nicely done.

John Geerts - your image of the old man walking is excellent. On both counts.

Glowing in the morning sunshine...

Very well seen, the crossing sign, Stem.

Thank you Elsa.
Nice yellows, Chip.
Deep reds for the morning, Akira ;)
Only the hornbeam Carpinus betulus and the Beech carry some leafs here at the moment.

I like #152 a lot. Nice framing and the details how nature is growing back onto the switch distribution boxes: great stuff.

rose hip, fall 2015 series, @ flickr (https://flic.kr/p/B9QftL)
Is this image conflicting with the thread theme?
I had to solve issues with light/shadow and the red color of the rose hip where the solution lies in BW post processing.
'Will move it if it does not match the subject here.
-
Implied colours? ;D
There are rose species with black hips though. Rosa pimpinellifolia is widely distributed in Europe.

Thank you for smoothing the way here, Bjørn :D

Is that the species that likes growing in dunes and at beaches with trillions of thorns?

... Is that the species that likes growing in dunes and at beaches with trillions of thorns?
Yes, sand dunes and beaches are a common habitat for this Rose species. The stems are indeed densely covered with thin prickly thorns.

Mikes: Great shot in the hotel lobby. This is the Aspen Glow. Isn't it?

Chip. You live in Portland Oregon? One of the few Cities claiming to be carbon neutral in 2050. Wow.
Great colors. Anything to see of the fight for better climate?

Danke, Frank. To be precise it's more monochrome than BW though. There is some toning...

Mikes: Great shot in the hotel lobby. This is the Aspen Glow. Isn't it?
Thanks, Frank. It really is an Aspen glow, but I'm not sure that it is/was actually an Aspen. The leaves seemed to be too small....
-
Mikes: Not an Aspen as the butterfly-like leaf shape doesn't match that genus. Too many alternatives to list, though.

Could also be a bunch of yellow Oncidium orchid (or some kind) flower branches?

Nice. I think the background off-focus rendering is a bit too prominent compared to the foreground leaves.
Which as well could be considered being in the way of the very interesting background drawing.
We hadn'd have a blue sky since 2 or 3 weeks...

This thread posses some magnificent images.
Here is my modest autumn color attempt :)

Must be a Prunus autumnalis plena i think, autumn and often through mild winters flowering cherry tree

@Jakov: We have a loot of blossoming cherries in our street. disoriented trees and bushes

I am still waiting for winter. 12ºC is not really normal for December in NL.

11° C here. Remontand roses and orange colored chaenomeles south of the house are flowering.

Nice images, Akira. I like the close up.

As Akira said, autumn colours have continued well into winter here in Tokyo. This was taken a week ago, but heavy winds today have completely stripped this Ginko of its leaves.
This is a little too red, thanks to Adobe CC's sRGB conversions.

The traffic sign in your photo and Andrea's adding another dimension to what's already beautiful.
Anirban, the traffic signs are there to imply Bjørn. :)
FWIW, the red inverted triangle sign in my last image means "STOP", which makes Andrea's response even more approprieate.

Thanks, Anirban. I really like the lush greens in your post #197 - quite a contrast!
