Title: [Theme] Show us your smartphone images
Post by: Jan Anne on October 27, 2015, 21:48:09
From time to time I use my iPhone to capture those random moments in life that you just have to capture but don't have a dedicated camera at hand to do so.

A snapshot with the iPhone 5 from this morning while waiting for the tram with the sun trying to burn through the hazy morning air creating a nice scene I just had to capture. The composition is not as centred as I would like because I had to fool the camera a bit using the "fast compose and shoot" method to get the desired effect before the built in camera realised it wanted to up the exposure killing the hazy look.

I'm afraid this image has been posted elsewhere, and it is actually a cellphone, not a smartphone, image.  But I think it would be interesting.  Shot with IR84 filter taped in front of the lens.

Now back in Santa Clara, California. I regret not carrying a real camera that night when all these cool car owners gathered in a neighborhood pizza joint.

I do use the phone a lot as a camera. It is always with me and the geotagging makes it very useful  to record places were I can do a "serious shooting" later on. And of course, intimate moments, because it is always there.
This is pushing it a lot.  A picture of a rehearsal this past summer with Cirque du Soleil. Stage is the most technically demanding environment for me so far. Doing it with a phone feels like showing of... :)
  No, I wasn´t there as a photographer.

I'm very rarely the person at a concert with their phone out but I had such good seats for Grace Jones at the Hollywood bowl that I couldn't not take some crappy cell phone snaps.

1) Grace wearing her primary outfit for the evening, a corset & body paint.

2) Grace being the disco ball with a hat covered in mirrors.

First image is also a rehearsal. The tricky part it is to balance the lights with the black to get a "close to good" exposure. I´m very happy with this one. Just resized for the web.
Second one is one example of looking for location for "serious shooting later". I haven´t used this one yet but it is very promising. Samsung s4 with pp in photoshop.

Last time I checked the sheep were on the other side of the grassland but all of a sudden they were in front of my windows and of course no camera in sight, the iPhone came to the rescue once more to capture my new neighbours walking past while the grass was all white from the cold night before.

I like tunnels a lot, the transition from dark to light usually poses some interesting sceneries.

We walked passed these two chatting away in Catalan, grabbed the iPhone, choose a bold filter and turned around half way the tunnel hoping they would still be there to make the composition a little more interesting.

This was posted in another thread recently.  I was amazed by the recovered gradation in the sky and the pliability of jpeg data from my iPhone SE.  So long as you don't pixel-peep at 100%, the smartphone cameras are quite useable for posting such an image to facebook.  Edited in CC2017.

Is it perfect, hell no. But it did capture the mood of the moment in an aesthetically pleasing manner, at least to me it did  :)

Yes and no ;D

'Yes' because the hands capture what the eyes see, regardless of which camera is at hand.

'No' because with Hipstamatic I determine the used filters in advance and the captured images are what they are whereas with the images captured with my Sony the RAW files are processed in post and I would probably crop away some empty blacks, burn the blacks even further, use the wider dynamic range for more detail, make the lady in the park stand out a little more, stick with color, etc.

Where some see the limited capabilities of smartphone cameras as impediments I see them as opportunities to explore. As an example, a black and white filter turns out to be a perfect match with the limited dynamic range of the small sensor to create high contrast backlit images as both the whites and blacks burn out easily.

By taking the possibility of post processing out of the equation one is also forced to get creative to capture the images in camera as envisioned. As there are few controls to tinker with one also needs to fool the light meter from time to time by letting the exposure settle on a different scene followed by a quick recompose and image capture.

Personally I like these kind of challenges as they make me a better photographer, stick with your trusty DSLR if one prefers a more predictable outcome :)

So do I, but I have a swelling underneath my retina which limits my time behind a computer screen to only a few hours a day which is barely enough for work so hanging around on fora and such is very limited for a few more months.

The image of my right eye seems further away than my good eye and has a serious moustache distortion not fixable with glasses, so driving around by car is also limited which is somewhat compensated by driving a couple hours on my lawnmower tractor each week with a cold beer in the cupholder ;D

Interesting Akira, do you need a third party app?

Paco, yes.  The default camera app doesn't shoot RAW (at least in SE), and I like the fact that DNG files retain details that are not marred by the default noise reduction.

Akira, I would have never guessed that it was made with an iPhone. Well done!

Totally agreed, Jaokov!  I was impressed by the quality of DNG files from iPhone SE.  The ones from iPhone7 or X should be even better.

Since i have it with me all the time, there are times i use it to capture something nice. I tend to use the Lightroom's CC camera module which is much more flexible than iphone's 7 native camera app.

I am amazed by the capabilities of the iphone11 pro camera. During my last vacation I almost took as many photos with the iPhone as with the Z6. Herewith an impression from the recent Star Wars attraction "The Rise of the Resistance". Light was difficult but the phone did well.

Great catch, Hans!  Actually, I believe that a smartphone could be the most suitable camera to shoot small objects on the ground with the camera directed upwards, which is proven by your Amanita pantherina (?) image.  Also, the potential large DOF of a small format camera helps a lot here.

I see that, even though i have no problem at all to stick my D850 to the ground and running a 125 image stack with a macro lens to get something similar  :) It's my hobby after all. Also the background would look a bit smoother (and better if you ask me).

The quality of smart phone images have come a long way over recent years.  I have personally only used my iPhone for very basic documentation, e.g. for work purposes or for assisting trades people when seeking quotations for work on my home

Do people on this site just use their smartphone cameras with the native software that comes with the phone or do they use other software that gives them more traditional control over camera functions?

This question is prompted by a family member who has sent me a number of images from her trip to sunny Spain.  In looking at the EXIF data, the camera/phone has elected to perform nearly all of its exposures at f/1.8 - the maximum aperture at quite ISO settings, and I am thinking that stopping down a little would yield better definition in the images.  I am aware that there are camera control apps (and in camera processing) softwares out there.

What do people on this thread do - do they use the native camera apps on the phone or do they install camera control software that gives them a more camera like experience?

Likewise, do people use in-phone image processing software or do they export to computers for processing?

As always, many thanks in advance.

I’m using an iPhone, now an 13 Pro Max. Pictures are flowing directly into Adobe Lightroom Mobile, and are treated directly from the iPhone, or/and later into the Lr desktop application.

I used to try apps to process RAW data in iPhone, but now I feel that the default Photo app is good enough to edit the image shot with the integrated camera of my iPhone SE2.  The RAW data is surprisingly pliable in the app, and I can adjust the highlight, shadow and contrast satisfactorily enough for sharing on Facebook or Instagram.  I'm not satisfied with the low-light image quality, but the SE3 seems to be noticeably better in this regard.  So, I'm looking forward to my next iPhone (possibly SE4 with USB-C).

I agree. I learned from a local newspaper journalist, that their only assigned photographic equipment is now a smartphone.

Amateur food photography. Smartphones combined with serious post processing editing are doing an excellent job for pictures serving social media and the like.

The image was cropped on the phone, then additional editing with color efex in the computer to bring out some more contrast/detail, using only the jpg file.
The mobile quality is quite good and will be my photo choice for everyday/casual shots, disadvantage is the lack of a more responsive shutter, there is always a lag and of course no aperture control.
I have yet to use the high res mode which is 50 megapixels, I've been using the 12 mp default resolution.

It certainly is disconcerting how easy it is to get decent images from the phone, comparing it to all the work that it would take with a camera, using your image as example  a couple of questions to resolve would be:
where is the focus, are the highlights blown?

Armando, have you tried any of the camera  apps that are now available for iPhones and Android devices?  IIRC, I am pretty sure that some of these apps provide extended control sets including aperture control.

I have never been fond of cell phones beyond the use as a telephone. In particular, I almost never take it out for an image. However, I cannot deny the fact that when I do not have a camera with me while walking the dog and the light is good on the pond, this device without any thought does a much better job than I could do with a dedicated tool.

Being cycling a lot in the last few years the photographic tool of choice somewhat needed to be small and light and the phone came handy.

Lately it's been an Iphone 13, which doesn't reproduce sunset and twilight to my satisfaction.

The iPhone's depth of field enabled me to capture this rose in its context of the church grounds. Unfortunately, it also captured some rather unattractive harshness in the foliage on the right.

The past 9 months I've been very busy with Yaiza, our mini Labradoodle. Yaiza is the name of a beautiful, small village on Lanzarote our favorite Canary island. This is our first dog and the first months were exhausting, especially for me as my wife is still working and planning to do so for a few more years. Now Yaiza is 9 months and calmed down. It's such a warm and loving feeling having her with us.

Yaiza is a beautiful dog, Luc.  I love Labradoodles.  They remind me of our Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier but larger...all grown up.  If Yaiza is half as energetic as our Christie, I'm sure she is a handful.  Gotta love dogs.

Hi Bent, Yaiza is an Australian Labradoodle. A popular dog in the Netherlands. These dogs are so-called hypoallergenic, so in fact the only kind of dog my wife and I can have because we're both highly allergic. Because these dogs are popular a lot of unreliable breeders offer puppies, often with health problems. We chose a 100% reliable breeder which meant we had to wait for 1 year due to a waiting list.

I had a  blast with this lively bunch. They are so much fun, positive energy. There we were going to a choreographic meeting. They are the winners from every conservatoire in the andalusian region. Very nice evening.
  They are the future!
