Going through my hard drive full of photos I stumbled upon this minimalist photo I took in Cres, Croatia back in 2010.
Show me how you see minimalism! :)
-
Love it. Mykind of photo.
-
Great one Jakov.
I have my black cat, but that is an easy one ;)
Found this in the archives. Perhaps too much expressionism to be regarded as minimalism.?
EDIT - image
-
thanks Viv and John!
John, yours would be more minimalist without the green leaves i guess...
-
Thanks Jakov, you are right. I made an 'EDIT' ;)
-
To me this is minimalistic - but maybe the subject isn't simple enough or contains too much detail.

Minimal parts of a flower from a morning stroll.

A contribution, hoping it's not to many details... ::) :D

Thanks Jakov. Hehe, these are the skiteachers in See, Austria doing their weekly show. Shot with the d2h nonetheless. It reminded me quite a bit of a James Bond scene.

Eb, your orchid closeup is simply exquisite!
Thanks for the comment on my image. Baroque guitars are the most elaborately decorated European plucked instruments in the entire history. Unfortunately this one is not mine, but I have a reproduction of a French guitar from 19th century made by the same luthier. It is also very well made.

You are fortunate, indeed, Akira, to have your fine 19th century reproduction instrument, by this maker! I have had many classical guitars, I should have kept them, since they now are so much more expensive. Among them were a Kohno #15 and a Sakurai #10. Currently I am satisfied with two locally made custom instruments. One is based on a Kohno plantilla, obviously derived from the Spanish and the other an English style (Romanillos) plan, based on his study of Hauser designs. I try hard to play, but arthritis has caught up to me! :(
-
Mr. Sakurai is the best deciple of Kohno and is the head of Kohno guitars. One of their fortes is that the tonewoods they work on are very well seasoned, and the guitars are very immune to the change of the climate, which make them one of the favorites among the guitarists traveling around the world. I think Kohno and Romanillos (based on Hauser which is a far descendant of Torres) are two of the best designs of the modern classical guitars.
Sorry about your arthritis. Actually, I figure one of the biggest problem among the modern classical guitar players is that the standard way of holding the guitar tend to cause tendonisis. The way 19th century guitars were held was way more tender to the body. Also, the 19th century guitars like La Cote, Panormo, Stauffer are much smaller, and their necks are more like today's electric guitars. So, they are much more comfortable to handle, carry and store. That's why I ended up with my copy.

Oh, c'mon! Please tell us more about the enigma lens!

Nice to go off topic and swap guitar stories. Maybe a good idea to start a guitar images thread!
Yes, I hear you on the difficult positions/ergonomics for playing modern classical guitars. Typically, it is OK when you are younger. I gave up on footstools and use the Barnett guitar support. That helps, but at my age, nothing helps enough with arthritis/tendonitis/tunnel carpal/ etc. afflictions - too little, too late! BTW, I once played a Panormo copy and nearly jumped out of my skin! Had to have one, but couldn't justify or really afford one at that time. So I am pleased you found yourself a guitar based on that period.
My Romanillos copy is a compromise, smaller and lighter, but no where near a 19th century instrument, 'though! You are right about the Kohno/Sakurai guitars, both very solid instruments, which survived without cracking in the dry prairie climate near Calgary and the wet Vancouver climate. Both were made in the 1970s.

Eb, I could also go on forever talking about the gutars, but we'd better stop highjacking this beautiful thread started by Jakov!

There are so many ways to achieve minimalism. I believe it is exploration of the impact of simplicity, a meaningful glance, a single word, a single bar. Perhaps, we strive for that in most of our photographs.

When I see these wonderful snowy images I always think whether I would even think about taking a photo, let alone grabbing the camera and making it. It looks so cold, I would just try to get inside as soon as possible :)

Jakov: you surrender to snow and immerse yourself into the stuff. Play with snow. Be a kid again. Make snow angels. Drive your car on snowy and icy roads and have fun.
Of course, some times there can be plenty of snow, even in my part of the country (near my house a few winters ago, D3X + 35/1.4 AIS)

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, cloning out the submerged stuff would make it even more abstract and minimalistic. On the other hand, the hint of continuation beneath the surface has a mysterious quality as well.

This is a minimalistic image that is quite open to interpretation. My experience is people perceive it rather differently-

That is just a working hypothesis.

Water Horsetail (Equisetum fluviatile). (Nikon D200 IR, 105/4 Micro-Nikkor).
I particularly like this botanic family. So many graphics images we can obtain.
And I suspect this plants are coming from very old ages without much evolution like ferns.
Nice way to picture it with invisible spectrum. A completely unknown field from me. :)
-
IR can add an extra dimension to many subjects. Still, the photographer needs to locate the scene and capture it for posterity. There is no free lunch :D.
"Foo Fighters" (Panasonic GH-2, Rodenstock 50/0.75)
-
This image could fit in this thread or in with the "Heligon"topic. Since it was captured using the shorter 50/0.75 Heligon, I put it here.
In general one try to make the lens come as close as possible to the film plane, in order to make it perform better by not being pushed as widely out of its designed domain. These lens in fact were extremely high quality performers using exotic high-refractive glass, and with a commensurate price as well. However, as their back focal distance ('register') is usually just a few mm, they are invariable abused and optically speaking compromised when mounted to any DSLR or even mirrorless cameras.
Contrary to what I expected, I found the best practical performance is not obtained by using the very shortest possible back focal distance, as the lens still is way outside its optimised conjugate distances and severe field curvature, spherical aberration, and astigmatism deteriorate the larger part of the capture frame. Best results so far has been with the lens on either my Panasonic GH-2 or the Nikon V1.
The capture of a Rudbeckia hirta is taken with the Panasonic GF-1. The image quality of this 12 MPix sensor does not do justice to the Heligon, though. The extremely shallow focused zone and the superb gradation into the out-of-focus background are endearing qualities of this exotic lump of glass and metal.

Not totally minimal
-
A minimalistic image plays with a minimum of visual components. In themselves these don't need to be simple. They may be rendered sharp or merely implied. There is no rule set in stones to control this. However, something inside the frame should puzzle us and stir our curiosity, or make us respond emotionally. At times, we can be overwhelmed as to what we'd expect to be present, but has been deliberately left out.
So your fence fits the concept, Bruno ...
I think this Anemone nemorosa has been posted before, but present it again as an illustration of the opening paragraph and the principles outlined therein.
-
This threat is brilliant
-
According to Bjørns helpful definition regarding 'minimalism' this might qualify ;)
-
It is easy easier to grasp when you express it that way. A question I often have in mind is what's the minimum I should show to convey the feeling, in front of the Minster in York 3 months ago for example. Showing everything did not convey the feeling of the mass of the building. The question for me was of the minimum needed to get the "implied". Your paragraph made these things click in place.
I understood something this evening :). Thanks.
-
There is evidently an unlimited supply of these images. So please guys, do keep bringing them on.
A small contribution of mine using the elusive AF Nikkor 200 mm f/3.5 ED-IF.
-
Some lenses have the potential to create perfectly minimalistic images from the get-go. However, it is still the task of the photographer to direct such a lens to a suitable target, and envision a suitable framing.
MATI Navitar 86 mm f/1.2 belongs to this class of minimalistic-creating optics. The lens is quite unusual and as it to my knowledge hasn't attracted the attention of collectors, can be had for modest prices (yet). It shares much of the minimalisation power of the better Heligons, but can boast of an adjustable aperture from f/1.2 to f/8 in half-stop clicks. Its bokeh is beyond reproach.
My understanding is that the 86/1.2 was made in the US for Kodak photo duplicators.
(see now that the sensor of the camera used at the time (D2X) was very dirty, so don't blame the lens)

-
I like the many pictures but I also long for more comments. I will comment more too. OK?
Indeed Frank comments have been lacking broadly :)
-
Perhaps people are overwhelmed by the tsunami of minimalistic images? There has been a surprising variety of expressions here. I'm guilt of contributing my share of these ...
-
One may interpret Frank wasnt referring to this thread etc only.
-
Writing comments with a content takes time. We have deliberately refrained from dumbing down NG by "Like" buttons or similar nonsensical window-dressing.
-
I'm somewhat confused about the definition of a minimalist image. The first that comes to my mind is a lot of negative space but apparently that is not a prerequisite. As always, there's a grey zone of course.
-
Writing comments with a content takes time. We have deliberately refrained from dumbing down NG by "Like" buttons or similar nonsensical window-dressing.
Fortunately, no "likes" business, my interpretation is many of us are online through their phones, and often at a work environment, which makes commenting at least not easy.
-
Much can be said about accessing non-work-related sites during working hours .... but enough of that. There is a life outside the job too.
Only about 7% of the traffic to NG comes from mobile phones and tablets. Thus that by itself should not be an obstacle to having more comments.
-
I for once am overwhelmed with the quantity and quality of the images posted here -NikonGear as a whole-. I can barely keep up with seeing them, let alone comment. It is not fair but it is the most honest approach I can do as today. I hope I will have more time in my hands soon. It is not
something I "have to do" but something I will "like to do". In the mean time, I try to make good use of the little time I have to spend here making a balance between looking at all of your work, posting images of my own and engaging in a comment-critique here and there.
Thanks again to all of you for making this site possible.
-
NG is, now nearly six months after its inception, in a remarkable situation. The site growth has been so fast that it's nearly impossible for anyone, including the Team, to keep up with the sheer volume of images and information content posted. However, we are dealing with a problem of luxury so different from a site slowly becoming a ghost of its former glory.
-

Bjørn - you lost me there between "problem of luxury......" and "former glory"

Just remember where we come from - that's explaining a lot. NG has a luxury problem, ie. of getting so much content we strive to come to grips with it all. Not every photo site is in a similar situation at present. I have the statistics but no need to present the figures here.
Besides your hair isn't 'blond' by any stretch of imagination, Elsa :D
-
I'm somewhat confused about the definition of a minimalist image. The first that comes to my mind is a lot of negative space but apparently that is not a prerequisite. As always, there's a grey zone of course.
It seems as though we each have our own definitions of what a minimalist image consists of. In this thread I've found a blend of images that are minimal in subject matter and images that are minimalist images. There is a difference though definitions of this nature are tricky. Initially when I think of the best minimalism I imagine a James Turrell exhibit, or works that consist of few elements, often plenty of negative space, and ideally are incredibly moving in their execution and simplicity.
Minimalism. To say as much as possible with as little as possible.
Eb touched on this earlier, speaking of which the image he posted (post #69) is not something I would initially think of when imagining minimalism because of how busy it is. But it has only two elements to it, sounds like minimalism to me. This is why it can be tricky, and perhaps futile, to define things of this nature.
-
I think 'minimalist' is equally tricky to define as say 'pornography'. We know it when we see it.

for me minimalism is keeping it simple :)
but we are all allowed to have our own point of view, and that's the beauty of diversity!

My take:
-
Let's see, i've found some more in the archives.
-
Just swinging my chair over 90 degrees to shoot this in my front garden, then rotate back to my work station and process the image. No need for leaving the computer at all. Managed a sip or two of coffee during the process as well. Now, that is minimalistic work in my book ...
-
i think that this is the 3rd time that I am mentioning that i cannot keep up with this thread and comment all the amazing images, including you, Hans :)
-
Minimalist exposing
-
Hans - your yellow is so subtle and inviting.
Bjørn - now imagine you got your "a" out of that chair - 10 times more images ;D ;D
Bjørn - I am a bit like you - I parked a chair right in front of my lounge sliding doors - and can sit and shoot there. But I have to get up to process it.
-
Charlie - thats a nice image. I like the patterns!
-
Dunes
-
Charlie I would minimise the exposure even further.
Roland those dunes are beautiful. Where was the photo taken?

Winter scenes allows for an unlimited supply of "minimalistic" pictures. Here water forced through cracks in the thick ice of an alpine lake showing its remarkable blue colour. All perception of scale is lost by such scenes (in fact, the crack is more than 200 m in length. I'm shooting this motif from distance over 1 km away).

No, I am unashamedly a Southerner. Minimum bathing temperature is 22 Celsius.

Someone in the neighborhood actually decorated this tree (no image manipulation here other than enhancing an already present structure/grain).
It must have been quite a challenge as it is pretty tall, and the Alaska spruce variants do not have particularly strong branches suitable for climbing.

Ice edges on a river can be a nice distraction if there isn't anything else around to shoot.
-
Bjørn, the ice in the river is magical! It still amazes me how you see this stuff! I guess it was made in IR :)
Here is one of my favorite subjects made with 200/4 and PN-11.
-
Jakov: using a 400 mm lens suffices. Not IR.
-
Following up on the flower theme ... Scented Mayweed
-
Snow scenes tend to be minimalistic by their very nature. Using a long lens allows the photographer to carve out a suitable chunk of the white landscape and serve it up to the viewers.
(200-400/4 ED Nikkor, which by the way is a phenomenal landscape lens)
-
Bjørn, I am amazed how much depth of field you were able to extract with such a long lens?
I know you stopped it down, but still, it seems that everything is in focus?
Lovely image!
-
EXIF says f/24. Focal length around 300 mm.

Fons: that's a nice composite image for sure.
As we now are deep into the cold claws of winter over in my part of the world, did a quick image search for 'cold' images with patterns. Here is one example of Glyceria fluitans leaves frozen into thin ice. Fuhji S3 Pro UVIR with Nikkor 20 mm f/4.
-
Bjørn, that's magical!
-
The "problem" with minimalistic images is that there are so many of them in the archives ... A thread like this could well go on for years with a new photo posted daily, and yet the supply wouldn't dry up.
A winter shot appropriate for the season and the inclement weather of today. It's been snowing hard the last 24 hours and strong winds shift the fluffy stuff everywhere. There are just a few hours of semi daylight so fast lenses are a must.
Nikon D200 with the Noct-Nikkor 58 mm f/1.2 set wide open. After sunset, just before the world goes completely black.

John: nice depiction of mosquitoes and a Roegneria. Not entirely certain of the ID for that grass though.
-
Adding this one for you, Jakov .... An example that by observing Nature, you get the shots framed and readily served.
Our German friends surely will remember the touching story on "Knut, der Kleine Eisbär" a few years back.
One morning I found "Knut" ready made on a road verge by a snow cleaning machine. Gravel from the road surface had been distributed laterally by the snow plough. He had escaped from the German Zoo, but still contained by barbed wire :(

this scene struck me as a high-key, minimal moment, in actual life. the camera here shows essentially what my eye saw.

Love this beautiful distribution of the light, Schwett!
-
Last winter we had just a little snow. I pass by this scene every day, on my way to fetch my little red Peugeot and lost count of how many times I have snapped a shot of that white-painted picket fence. The neighbour kids had played football ('soccer') despite the dusting of snow so added patterns to a world of mainly cold blue whites.
Nikon Df, 35-70 mm f/3.5 Nikkor AIS (62 mm thread)
-
Schwett - truly minimalistic. Well captured!
-
Schwett: so minimalistic that the shadows along the wall become critical supports for the entire frame :D
-
Time to add more minimalism. This one actually was shot as a caricature of the slogan of the Norwegian Conservative Party ('Høyre'), by many jokingly named a flowing roll of toilet paper. The similarity is striking for sure. I intended to be a little more discreet though so so came up with this,

A Virginia creeper tries to sneak unnoticed into my dining room. These trailing shots are all over my house on the sunny side and I usually try to ignore them. This time, I made a snapshot of the intruder first, then cut off the trailing plant immediately afterwards.

Fences in winter landscapes are unbeatable for simplicity and minimalism. I find myself often shooting such subjects with long lenses, to add more to their inherently graphic nature. This scene is done with the venerable Zoom-Nikkor 200-600 mm f/9.5, a lens mostly going under the radar of current Nikon community as very few if any at all have heard of it. A surprising sharp and long yet lightweight zoom lens, the 200-600 in its various incarnations stayed for a long time on the list of offered Nikkors. It was designed well before the arrival of ED glass and sophisticated coatings so image quality might not be entirely up to modern standards, in particular as far as contrast goes. Its build quality is impeccable and that for a change also includes the tripod mount :D
My sample is an AIS from the very last production series around 1983.
-
Paco, special thanks!
Bjørn, how come we haven't seen that 200-600 lens during our many gatherings. Is it worth using now that the 200-500 VR exists?
-
Of course. I don't own the 200-500 VR and have no plans in that regard either.
Why you haven't seen it? There are *many* lenses in my possession not ('yet') accompanying me on the various trips.
-
Beautiful ones, Bjørn.
I am not so fond of 'Campings', but visit friends occasionally who wants to spend their valuable time in such a 'resort'. Sunset is usually the moment to leave...

'Minimalistic' is perhaps not the first thought that comes to mind when Dubai and its skyline are concerned. However, seen from the right angle and perspective, even the mighty Burj Khalifa skyscraper, still the tallest man-made structure on the planet, shrinks into more modest proportions. Very tiny in fact.

An enchanted evening in the beginning of January many years ago, I waited for something to happen to the beautiful scenery in front of me. It was very cold and the batteries of the D1X were about to die so I had just the opportunity of a few shots. Then just as the alpenglow peaked at maximum intensity, a gaggle of birds flew into view and positioned themselves perfectly in the frame. I snapped a shot and the camera died on me. Sometimes it is not about the image as such being built in a minimalistic fashion, rather about the implied message. Here about exhibiting minimalistic brain power.

Jakov, this is interesting. What is this actually? A negative image of round bokeh?
-
Yes, taken with D700+200/4 and PN-11. I was testing the combination bokeh against a strong light through branches, then scratch painted it :)
-
Oh, yeah, scratch paint! Thanks, Jakov!
-
In contrast to Jakov's experiments, this is straight-forward nature photography almost untouched off the camera. Couldn't be simpler.

Please give me some insights and share some knowledge with me :)

Jakov: I shoot my neighbour's picket fence ever so often when I fetch my little red car from its garage. An early morning shot deep into the winter. 28 mm f/2.8 Nikkor, Fuji S3 Pro.
The 'green on green' image was captured with a D70 and a Russian 500 mm f/5.6 lens aptly named B.I.G. (no, it's not a joke). The subject is leaves of Common Reed (Phragmites australis).

Bjork, I really like the snow and picket fence image. The tones are captivating, and am amused by the fence poking out of the snow. Makes me imagine it is the spine of some fantastical skeleton!
-
The combination of long lenses and winter scenes is a reliable recipe for getting minimalistic images.
Here the sun is setting on a lake not yet entirely frozen over, despite the -25C air temperature that day. Open water and calm cold weather guarantee a lot of fog to soften the overall impression of the scene.

Lasts for about 30 minutes (max.) after the sun has set. After this stage, the blue and indigo hues prevail.
On an inland lake in a forest region, the water can become mirror-like calm just after the sun has gone under the horizon. When the wind picks up again, the mosquitoes and gnats attack in full force. So about time to pick up your stuff and flee.

I fully support the people of New Zealand to chose their own flag. I have seen some examples of possible future flags and I liked a few. It is very difficult to engage the population in such a dramatic change but I wish them courage and success, and I respect the Prime Minister for his initiative :)
Once a new flag is chosen for the Kiwis I suspect the Ausies are going to to do the same, but the Kiwis would always be able to say, we did it first :)

Bjørn, on #631, was that painted on the surface or is it light splitted thru a prism? Very nice picture by the way :)

I recorded exactly what was in front of me. The sunlight entered a Metro station through gridded overhead screens and I assume this created the rainbow pattern.

I would baptize it as Zebra :)
No, more like a creation of the Df's uncanny ability to generate contrast of scenes in which no contrast is to be found (actually, window reflections onto white snow. With the naked eye one could barely discern any pattern at all)

-
No. My notes say F3, 45/2.8 GN.
Then it should be a scan...
-
Oh, sorry. I misunderstood the question and thought it to imply a scanner had been the imaging device as such. The images were recorded on film and accordingly had to be digitised. I used the medium-format LS8000 scanner so I could do two film strips lying parallel to each other.
-
This image, on the other hand, is a true-born child of the digital era (D200) and the famous 14-24 Nikkor. It was the chief outcome of my 11.11.11 Day Project of shooting (you might have guessed) 11 frames.
I had found the location a few days earlier and noted the prolific occurrence of Scented Mayweed (Matricaria perforata; Asteraceae) under a highway fly-over. This is a weed that is able to flower almost around the year even at my latitude. Thus the pre-visualisation already had been at work before I arrived on location that day. Unfortunately, a spell of nocturnal frost the previous day had killed off most of the plants and made them droop. Getting the image was an exercise in lying on my back and shooting the remaining plants from below. Wet and cold, but I got my picture. I did a number of takes and this version is my reference. It prints beautifully over a double-page spread by the way.
-
Bjørn, simply fantastic!
So you stacked 11 images one on top of the other?
-
Nah. Just 11 single captures for that day. I was curious what I might come up with given that [voluntary] limitation. Five of the images were different interpretations of the Mayweed - Road Bridge Theme. As the frost-impacted plants had lost most of their vigour and it was a grey, windy day, composing the scene with the plants moving randomly around was not entirely straight-forward.
-
Impressive Graphical image. UV, I guess? Was it a project for 11 frames for 11 days?
-
It's IR (hint: 14-24 Nikkor used). The date 11.11.11 set the scope, namely, take 11 images during that day.
-
Here is another of the 11 frames. The number '11' is conveyed in various fashions.
-
Impressive images and processes, Bjørn.

Very inspirational images Bjørn, Eddie and Børge. Thanks for sharing them.
I couldn't comment on each of them, but each photos you have posted shows how far "out of the box" possibly anyone could visualize (and pre-visualize). Thanks again!
-
Thanks go to you too :D
I frequently hear the strange statement "everything has been photographed. There is nothing more to discover in photography". Is that really so?
The obvious answer is just "try again". There are are no limits as to what and how something can be photographed other than those restrictions we carry in our own mindset and imagination.
To better understand the above, compare my previous photo and this one*, taken the same day, from the exact same vantage point, same camera and lens, within minutes of the previous frame,
*(I think this has been posted before, so bear over me, it is presented here as 'evidence' to prove a major point)
-
... the story continues ...
Now, what was the reason for me to propel myself to this location? It was the breaking up of ice on a small lowland river that I most conveniently could document from a bridge running over it. Thus this was (part of) the scenery that I saw at first, ie. what one observed *before* the eyes commenced to look at the scene itself and what resided there.
Again, same camera, same lens, and each within minutes of the next frame.
(for this picture, it is pretty obvious that the Zoom-Nikkor 80-200/4 has a focus shift in IR. The zoom creep comes in play as well. The image lacks critical sharpness. As the D200 has no Live View, I didn't catch this issue properly at the time. Thus I'm reminded to use alternate camera supporting LiveView should I continue using this zoom lens for IR. The D5300 now has replaced the D200 for this , and other, reasons.)
-
I frequently find myself thinking what you wrote Bjørn. Framing a scene differently is quite a challenge sometimes. One have to use all the tools in the toolbox. Creativity comes and goes like the waves in the ocean. And sometimes I´m not even close to the beach ;)
-
Børge, that is a funny one :)

Nice lights
-
The camera body is really nice. Like the Sun is shining from it :)
-
Thank you Jakov. The idea for this photo was one of my girlfriend. I had tha camera on the dashboard of our car while we passed a lit store sign at night. She saw the image at the moment the light shone out through the lens. From a little experimenting I found this works best with my 105mm lens on the F which gives the most even lighting with a small sized lens. I guess other, longer tele lenses will do well too, but they are bigger of course.
-
Buddy, how many girlfriends do you have ;D
The idea is great, and yes, a lens with a 77mm thread might look even better... worth experimenting :)
-
One girlfriend with millions of ideas Jakov ;D
I could try a similar shot of my F3 and mount an 85mm f1,4 lens on it. Not sure if the magnification effect of the 85mm lens gives off an even lightbulb like the one through the 105mm but it certainly is worth a try.
The technical execution is really simple. Camera on tripod in front of an off-white interior door with a lightsource pointed at the door, but behind the camera. Shot taken handheld with a 50'ish mm lens

Tried this today and regardless of the angle and distance I took it just did not work. With the 85mm f1,4 I just get a faint spot on th ecenter of th elens but not the clear edge I got with the 105mm. Tried it with the 105mm on my F3 and it worked fine again. Not quite certain about the math behind it but I will work that out

Was the aperture fully open?
I hope you get it :)
Show us the faint spot :)

I will process the files tomorrow. I also made a few shots with the 105mm mounted on the F3 so I will at least have something to show. :)

moved to camera talk :)

Solitaire: consider moving the camera shots, nicely minimalistic as they are, to the appropriate thread in Camera Talk. As these are your own posts moving ought to be feasible. If not then an Amin can do this for you.

Nice!
-
Thanks gents, appreciated.
The technique used isn't really new at all, it certainly isn't a macro fish eye ;D
I' using a wide angle reversed on top of a (short) tele. So, in this example i think a 35 reversed on top of a 135.

Jakov, nice!
Buddy, well seen. Is this all in camera?
Some of mine, first flower related.
-
Then, some more mundane subjects, but full throttle (meaning all sliders to the max)
-
Hans, most of the images comes out of the camera more or less like I show them.
On the Blue Orb series I added a little clarity, intensified the black a little and that was it. Not even sharpening. Then again, the room was pitch black when I took the photos and focusing, even at f1,2 was tricky enough. I took about 50 photos to get these 3.
On the doors I shot a few testers, then set exposure manually, shofted the lens down a bit and hoped for the best.
When I got home the surrounding wall had a bit more detail then I had hoped for so I burned the surrounding wall a bit and cloned out a pillar. I also cloned some of the dark areas in the lower left and right to the top of the image to isolate the doors.
Looking at the image I had in front of me I did not like it so I went back to one of the original test exposures, straightened the image. Then I added a bit to the highlights, some clarity and contrast and exported the JPG.
You can find the NEF file here:

Thanks for the extra info Buddy
I was not critiqueing, just curious how you did it. It is a kick ass image!
-
Hans, I wouldn't mind critique either. It's welcome at any time. In this case I expected already that you were curious, which is why I provided the NEF as well to see how the in-camera results compared to the final image. Personally I always find these processes interesting when seeing images made by others so it could happen at any time that I ask to compare a final edit with an NEF to allow me to learn something new or unexpected.

Hans, the last one of these - I like it a lot!
It's about how the structure (from machining?) is pronounced, the light and the black framing.
Balance is cept by the one line in the upper area..

'never be finished with the tulips'
Well, more precisely I ment to say 'not yet finished with the tulips' in spring 2016
There seems a lot more captures in them ::) 8)

Thanks Thomas. It is from machining. It's the handle bar on a shower cabinet, the line on top is the reflection in the surface of the drawer the handle bar is on.

Minimalist enough?

Here is a moose in pitch dark. The ISO was definately in HIxxx area. Couldnt see it but heared in front of me. Focus was guesstimated.
One of the few times I've seen fixed pattern noise contribute to the shot.

... I wonder what the orange stripe is? ...
It must be a vapour trail.
I also really like the picture. However, for the minimalism thread, i'd have liked the foreground trees to be out of focus more, they are quite defined (which is probable desired for other purposes). IMHO of course.
-
I just love this thread!
-
It has been a while since I have posted a photo in this lovely thread :)
A bit of inverted rain.
-
Dynamic, strong graphic impact. The contrast in line with the harsh flying thingies. Difficult to decipher -what is going on?-. You still keep the imperfections and I think they work, even in this minimalist thread. It sounds like water but also metalic. What is it?
Don´t tell me :)
-
Jakov, I am again amazed by your ability to see things differently.
-
Indeed, great graphics, Jakov.

Yes, it is a so-called 'contrail' from a commercial jet at or just after sundown. I agree that it's not as minimal as some have been. If this thread demonstrates anything, it's that the term "minimalist" is open to wide interpretation.

Aquatic plant
-
Your aquatic plant is Persicaria amphibia (Polygonum amphibium). A very strange plant that thrives equally well on dry land as being entirely submersed (a behaviour reflected in its species epithet). Later in the season, it has aerial spikes densely packed with pink flowers.
-
Thanks Bjørn. That explains why it is flourishing on the Ven, a lake with sandy earth where waterlevels fluctuate enormously. With the massive rain in June the whole area is overfloated with sub -lakes. In hot summers the lake can disappear.
-
The dog and the glowing ball. Visionary series, Buddy!
-
One of my favourite minimalists is the Japanese (or Japanese-American) photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto (http://www.sugimotohiroshi.com/). He is most famous for his seascapes (http://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection#!?q=Sugimoto&sortBy=Relevance&sortOrder=asc&page=1). A while ago I spent a few weeks living in a house on the bottom edge of Australia, overlooking the Southern Ocean - which I have not seen a Sugimoto photograph of. This is mine.

Flower...
-
The yellow flower is Senecio inaequidens, an invasive species from South Africa, now spreading rapidly in Europe (its Norwegian name contains "boer" to stress the origin. Don't know the English name, the genus is Ragwort). It is poisonous to livestock.
-
Thanks Bjørn. According to a Dutch flora site the name is Narrow-leaved Ragwort (or South African Ragwort) In Dutch it is Bezemkruiskruid, no relation to Boer there ;) http://wilde-planten.nl/bezemkruiskruid.htm (http://wilde-planten.nl/bezemkruiskruid.htm)
It's so invasive that it pops up in my front door...
-
I see it everywhere along the major roads when I visit my Dutch friends. Must have become very common.
-
Yes, it's a general species here. The plant apparently came with the import of wool. It established it's position between 1925 and 1949. (according to the earlier mentioned website)
-
Found this whilst looking for the Senecio in my archives. Don't remember if it has been posted before, though.

Nah. Ski tracks across a snow-covered lake surface that has undergone cycles of thawing and re-freezing. Sooner or later the weather-induced erosion has obliterated any signs of the origins of the pattern.

I´m waiting for the arrival of a copy of the Nikon 85mm 1.4D. It is suppose to have a "little bit" of fungus in the front element. I have been looking at the articles here of how to remove it and thought of giving it a go since the lens is in very good conditions otherwise.
Anyway, this kind of scenes are calling my attention so I figure I´m not calm underneath :)
-
The river side in Seville in under-construction. Have been for a while but there is talk of finishing soon. Because of this metal walls, is the first time I don´t want the work to be finished! :)
-
Paco you will enjoy the 85/1.4D and you will make magnificent photos of your dancers with it.
Oh, how I would like to visit Seville, with or without the metal construction wall :)
-
Not my corkscrew. :)

A nice and subtle picture Jakov. Showing just a hint with tact and respect to the model. But is'nt it a bit early in the year to make us think about gardening Jakov ;D

Thank you, Paco and Børge!
Børge, you must explain the gardening in more detail, please :)

Jacov, that's lovely.

Jakov, another version of the same subject, I hope the explanation will not spoil the impression ? These were taken in Mechelan, Belgium, walking around I noticed these pavement tables chained up outside a closed cafe, the unevenness of the pavement caused the asymmetrical pattern.

Thank you both, that image is the result of my carry the camera at all times photography method, as I exited a shop I noticed the water droplets and shadows on the surface of a highly waxed vehicle parked outside, I doubt I will ever be able to go out looking for a particular subject, I just keep my eyes open for something ( hopefully ) interesting to photograph.

Jakov, another ' found/observed ' mundane subject ! Over the last 15 years we have been making a fairly regular visit to the area just south of Luzern around the end of March early April, normally we are driving as far up the mountain passes as the snow allows but and it is unfair on Luzern that on a rainy day we spend time where there is some cover. The subject photographed is ( I mentioned it was mundane ) a utility service cabinet doors sited near the railway station. We are planning to drive our small MGTF ( not the vintage version ) car to Engelberg in 10 days, this image brought back some memories even though it does not portray a typical Swiss scene.

Jacks, I have never seen a utility cabinet that looks like that.

No, went in from the side as in a lateral movement. Anything ski- or snow-related is serious business in my country, as Børge can attest to. In times of championships there is apparently coverage 24/7 on all official broadcast channels. Enough craze to make you want to flee the country.

Bloody Australian Rules football started up for the winter season here today. It is a derivatove of Gaelic Football, as played by the Irish. Rules? It has no rules, but it does keep up to 100,000 raving drunken lunatics locked up voluntarily for over two hours/game in a stadium, so I suppose that it cannot be entirely bad!
The womens summer Australian Rules competition also finished today. Perhaps I should just flee Australia and come and live in Norway over what are our winter months!

I stumbled across this test snapshot, taken in my garden almost exactly 1 year ago. The unpleasant thing is I could go outside there and shot the same today, as the winter situation is about the same: mild (only a few degrees below 0C), almost no snow, still green leaves on my rose bushes. Climate changes are not easily escaped it appears.
Found this image when I tested barcode reading of some archival DVDs. Had forgotten all about those captures in the meanwhile.

But we have snow and it does not usually arrive this early, or even snow at all? My guess is we are heading for a new ice age :-)

But we have snow and it does not usually arrive this early, or even snow at all? My guess is we are heading for a new ice age :-)
In 2030_we go through an asteroid belt. Last time the planet took a hit, temperatures plummeted lower than the depths of the last ice age that the planet was coming out of. There were mass extinctions or so I'm led to believe. I haven't seen a mastodon or sabertooth cat lately so this might be true.

Nikon D800 with Nikon AF-S 105mm f/2.8 VR Micro at f/6.7, 1/750 sec, ISO 200.
I thought that I would throw this shot from yesterday into the minimalist hopper. I love photographing ocotillos and hope you all like it. I decided to leave the little tips of branches poking in from the edge because they seemed to balance out the composition a bit. And it seemed like a good chance to break a rule and get away with it. Speak up if you disagree. Also, I didn't bother to hunt for dust bunnies, but I am sure this image could use it.

Jakov, thanks for your observation. The poles were placed to signal that the previously open route is now closed to vehicles. As you can see, a few vehicles ignored the closure. I was tempted to do so myself, it would have saved me a several-mile walk.

Elsid, that’s gorgeous. I can’t point it...it just works. If anyone can please do.
-
Dynamite shot, Elsid. Subject, composition, color treatment is exciting to me.
This has a touch of the flavor of the 1970's photo-movement called "The New Topographics".
A clear photographic recording of seemingly ordinary objects and places, that when combined by the photographer in the frame and moment is simultaneously a document and a work of art.
-
Paco, Keith,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I took this photograph (Df+Zeiss 2.8/21) during my 2 day visit to Missolonghi (West-Central Greece) end of January. If I could use one word to describe what I felt/thought when I saw this scene, it is "daydreaming". Just sit on the bench and let the sea do the rest. I have lived all my life very close to the sea, except during the 7 years I was in the USA. Not a single day goes by without me having a look at it. It is like having a new woman by your side every day, because the sea is different every day. You never get tired of it.

Akira, Anthony,
Thank you for your kind words. The picture was taken last year on Jan 27 along with the 2 below. It was a cold but quiet sunset at the outlet of Evros river in the North East part of Greece, close to the border with Turkey.
-
Elias, thank you for the additional images. I love these kinds of mirror images. The first one is beautiful, and the literally minimalistic second one is simply great. The ripple of the water surface gives a subtle movement to the image, which is, again, subtly suggested by the reflected twig. How nice!

Camera was running 1600 ISO as the weather was really dark ... yet this capture used 1/8000 sec with the lens around 1:3 magnification and aperture probably around f/4 (no feedback into the EXIF). Ice is bright.
This setup has been shown earlier in the Z6/7 Camera talk thread, so suffice it here to say the lens will focus from infinity (at which distance the quality is atrocious and only the on-axis part has any likeness to a focused image) to around 1:2, thus encompassing the optimum 1:4 ~1:5 magnification.

The tennis centre has recently had its roof closure feature speeded up, so it can now be closed in a matter of just a few minutes rather than over a half hour wait previously.
What we have down here is a kind of high temperature version of the northern hemisphere's cabin fever syndrome where the high outside temperatures keep people inside their airconditioned homes and offices. Then it gets you when you venture outside.....
I do however sympathise with those in the cooler northern climates at this time of prolonged cold for them.
Go to the Australian Open, I heard they have a roof and a fully air-conditioned arena :)

Late spring in the inland mountain range.

Thanks Paco & Akira :)
The scenery simply asked for it. All I had to do was push the release button and do a little additional housekeeping afterwards.
-
In the case below, I had to jump into the aquatic environment with Ruth. An underwater housing for my Nikon D700 with the 20/2.8 Nikkor AIS was at hand. The coastal waters here at our summer cottage are rather murky as we are quite close to where Norway's largest river empties into the Norwegian Sea. Thus even when shooting up close, the overall sharpness of the scene suffers due to water tubidity and particle scattering. The evening sun broke through the clouds to give some much needed brilliance to the subsurface scene.
-
Late spring in the inland mountain range.
Interesting one , Birna !
Purely your own style.
Just wondering about the zig-zag at the left side. Metal bars, wooden posts ? Less likely a path.
Did you slide the ''saturation cursor'' to obtain the blue water ?
Am I curious ? ;D ;D

The "zig-zag" is a mountain road which may or may not open this year.

A minimal story of perseverance. It finally got through to the other side
-
A sanitized, or pre-processed version of what was the basis of a proposed poster art project, a decade ago. Some "dark", quite literally and visually, neo pagan, gothic silliness only the death metal-heads could appreciate. I say "literally" because the print was much darker -- bordered in a deep, fuzzy-black silhouette with an over-all silver-green caste. Ultimately, the finished product was a "greeting card" -- dreadful prose and all -- and something only kids with black fingernails could truly appreciate. I make no excuse, for my own excesses, then or now.
As you may well can visualize, all that empty space occupying the lower 2/3 to the right was were the awful "poetry" appeared. Should I ever find the nerve, or shed my last measure of self respect, I might post the finished project on another thread. Say, for Halloween or the name day of some Norse deity. (Or a CD release?)

Its the only interesting thing going on here on my property nowadays haha, also helps to have a camera ready to go to capture these brief moments in time.
Might set up some hides which I can enter undetected as the birds and wildlife are so skittish around here, see plenty of opportunities during the day but can’t get close enough for a good shot so usually just grab the 15x56 Swaro and enjoy the moment without disturbing the scene.

Birna, I don't know exactly what are you asking but it provoques a deeper thought in the process of picture-taking. I'm surprised every time.
I have been reading with interest the post by Michael about Allan Walls and the mental state and awareness they put in their process. Eric seems to know what they are talking about too. Not me. If anything, I think mine maybe the opposite. There is a sense of no-thought, no-ego, no-questions when I'm "in" . I can say that I shot by instinct, so much as to consider every pressing of the shutter as an act of serendipity, instead of one of deliberate action, like there is someone else doing it...but I digress. All this to tell you that yes, many of the images I take do surprise me when I get home. That's not to tell that I will like them :) but they are little gifts and in this particular case, an image that took me by surprise, that it is in infrared and "out there" compositionally, I do feel strangely -and wonderfully- pleased.
I hope this makes any sense out of my head.
-
What you describe is an echo of my own experiences in photography.

Ah, that struck a chord.
It may well be a reason why I feel such emotional response and inspiration from your work.
