Anirban, similar to what Armando suggested in your post, in photoshop i work around with the different colour slides under black and white tab,
you have to experiment with what you like,
b/w is about red, blue and yellow to put it simple,
light and contrast

Hello all.
From an early morning (slow) run in Cologne, Germany: train tracks leading to the station situated next to the Cologne Cathedral, started in 1248 and finished in 1880 - the largest gothic church in Europe with towers 157m/515ft tall.

You need to put #29, 30 and 31 together to see the similarities in the ancient animals and modern day building. Great stuff!

I was out before dawn yesterday with four cameras,  Mainly for birds, which were pretty good, but just to try some different types of images.  A couple ...
A bird in the dark with the D750, 300 2.8 wtc1.7  and new water body created by someone building a road around a paddy field

That second image created a mystery , I have no idea what the thing is between  the two fence posts.  I di not even notice when shooting  :(

A great thread and beautiful black and whites  ;)

Although I have my focus for color, there are many circumstances (or opportunities) black and white works better. For instance with movement and contrasts.

This one, a year ago, we had some heavy rains

This series continues to amaze me. Fons - did you ever think of publishing a book with these masterpieces? The book's title could be b&w's as well.

Tom - "Finding the dry path" and "I swear I saw another leak" both photos are awesome. Very story-telling like pictures!

Fons, well, it is India with lots of colour  ;) .  I normally do the colour version first and then go back and do a B&W or two, or three or....  ;D .  Big difference between the 40-150 2.8 and the 75 2.5 in terms of rendition.  I am really enjoying the tiny 75, so much so that I have bought the APO 90 f3.5.  I also enjoy the 75mm FL for how I shoot.  Trying to find a Leica M Summarit 75 f2.4 (or 2.5) used.

This was my first attempt at using the DC105 f2 on the Sony :) .  I do prefer the colour to B&W on this one but B&W works  :)

The tubes have been collecting top gas from the blast furnace.
In case of over pressure the gas was torched off for good. See the cage a the top of the central vertical pipe.

Just sitting on a small, country bridge talking to a couple of guys on a dreary morning.  No birds but I looked up and saw her coming down the road towards us.  Very unusual to see one out on the open spaces.  She got close and was deciding what to do.  Tried to go around the bridge on either side but did not fancy a swim.  Then she jumped to the nearest Palm tree .  When we did not leave she came down and sauntered across the bridge .  Shame I only had the D750,300 2.8vr w/tc1.7.

First image was playing with Nik in ways I had never tried. Just a tad overdone  ;D .   Second one is pretty straight forward conversion.  A bit different than European 'Street'  ;)

woah... impressive scene!

really like the contrast of the tracks, the futuristic looking things on the left and the blurred cathedral in the background

Found that thread just now - some info for those interested in some "bridge lore":
[bridge chitchat]
Actually the futuristic looking things are air conduits for the Colonge philharmony situated underground near cathedral and main station.

The arrangement of the tracks and the main station was purposefully chosen: train travellers to Cologne were to go straight on to the Cathedral. just in front of the Cathedral there is this turn to the right into the station hall.

Before ww2 there were two train double tracks leading across the river Rhine plus an additional street/ tram bridge. After ww2 only the train bridge segments were repaired/ reconstructed. In the late 80ies another double track train bridge for local trains was added.

Actually quite at the spot the photo was taken from there used to be big towers flanking the tracks and some kind of gate in between. Must have felt like driving thru a city gate.

Here is a historical photo from the 30ies showing that very spot in the image centre:
https://digit.wdr.de/entries/85547?index=6&q=eyJ7OH0iOlsiaG9oZW56b2xsZXJuYnJcdTAwZmNja2UiXX0%3D&qt=search

More general info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hohenzollernbr%C3%BCcke

Unfortunately the surroundings of the station grew quite infamous after New Year's Eve 2015.

Processing: NEF processed in Lightroom, exported to NIK Silver FX and used a few filters on there. One of them a very light sepia toning. Another added structure detail.

Lovely B+W conversions. I've said before that your skin tonal palette in your conversions are great.

How's the Summarit 75mm? Better than Heliar?

The Sid and JJ , many thanks.  I've been shooting Soccer for quite a while and love shooting a good match.  A boring match is just that, get 100 or so standard images for the teams then mess around keeping one eye out for something interesting.  Just becomes work  :( .  I have so many skin tones in a soccer match, every thing from Danes, Italians, Nigerians, not to mention the many Indian skin tones, many  :) .   Black and White is the shortcut...  ;)  Until the D750 everything was CNX2  :)

JJ,  the Summarit M cleared customs late last night.  Now DHL is waiting for a "Gate Pass" to take it out of the Airport.... Grrrrr  >:(.  I really like the little Voigt 75 2.5 but am hoping the Leica is better and different.   Hopefully I'll have it by Saturday.

Buddy, I really like the boots  :)

Airy, beautiful portrait!

Thanks Akira. Despite the shortcomings, I seem to like that angle; an earlier example is attached. It only works in B&W, preferrably using red or orange filters (in PP), because most of the time skin tones vary too strongly between face, cheeks, ears and neck.

As the photo referred to the re-installation of a road, being closed since 1863 due to railroad factories, I wanted to have a bit of the same look. The Velocipede bicycle was introduced and mass produced around the same time.  I personally both know the two gentlemen. To the left is  the chairman of an Old Bicycle foundation,  he is focussed to the new passage and the possibility not to bump his head in the new tunnel.  ;)

The one to right is a 'notorious' tramp, who looked here remarkably fresh.

John and Fons, very interesting images for early morning and first cup of coffee  :)

John , what is that shape being pointed at.  My only experience with be catchers here is when a hive starts growing under my eaves I call the local Beeman who comes and captures the hive.  Sort of like the local Snakeman  :) who gets the call when I have a Cobra or Russell's Viper

Fons, I viewed that second image, without reading glasses, on my mobile and did not have a clue as to what I was seeing.  Thought it was Apes in a cage  ;) .  Cool image.

Thanks Tom.  That is an authentic and original Beehive. That form is the most effective way to gather as much honey as possible and is based on their natural 'nest'.

The disadvantage is the difficulty to harvest  the honey and wax.

Hello Tom,
It was a windless, cloudy afternoon, with some fog and calm water. I like to take photos of old fishing boats.
Crete is a destination that offers a lot to the visitor. We will try to get as much as we can. You might have been tempted to join, if you were located closer or if you had won the lottery.

I really like this as well.  I have a fondness for ramshackle wooden structures  :) .  I'm using/learning B&W more these days,  Thanks.   I have spent several Temporary Assignments at the old Naval Air Station , Souda Bay so know the area fairly well. Funny War Stories about me and Souda Bay during the 1st Gulf War  ;).   Yup, the lottery win would help but also my son's school schedule just doesn't work.  Some Island hopping would really suit me at the moment.  It has been too long since I've been to Greece  :(.  No Retsina in Goa!
Enjoy,
Tom

Anthony,  great job on the textures and tones on the wood.   Of course the bleak surroundings add a lot.

Lars,  I like it but seems you should be able to get more details from the wood, pealing paint.  Some work on the mid-tone slider maybe.

All of you seem to have cool old structures made of wood.  I have many ruins (less all of the time with land values) but mostly mud and stone.
Cheers,
Tom

Thanks for commenting Tom.

I've probably focused more on contrasts than fine details in the wood etc. Also, the light was a mix of sun and shade. I might give your suggestions a try.
I agree with your comments on Anthony's shot - great detail, tones, textures. Maybe the (seemingly) diffuse light is better(?).

In this case, despite autumn had commenced and the +8C (max.) water temperature of  the Arctic Sea, these intrepid youngsters undressed and happily ran  into the breaking waters on this Lofoten beach.

Racket tailed Drongo
Backlit by sunrise so just the black shape ooc.   Just playing with recovery.  I rarely see them and have no good images.  I was driving in the jeep and saw it on a wire, stopped and as I got out with the D500, 300 2.8 it darted out to snag a Fly. This was the return trip.

Navy Petty Officer seems to be lost  :) .  No idea why he is in the Paddy Fields.   D500 ,300 2.8vr w/tc 1.4 handheld on the far end of the track.  Not so much about the image as the fact that my Df suffered some damage from another weird accident.  The USB port seems to have a problem.  I'll take it out this week to test everything else but it will not open on the computer (card reader works fine) .  Shooting into the sun.

Armando, at my age most of the women I know are not big on the idea of posing for me.   Even my wife hates it.   I have known this young lady since she was a baby and she is very happy for me to photograph her but unfortunately she is at school about 12 hours away so I only see her during her school Hols.  This was taken at a recent event with the Pen F, Pany 25 f1.4 at f2.8.   I would really like to try some lighting with her (lighting has never been my strong suit...lol) .  I do not think I've posted before...

Tom , I do not know these girls, I'm part of a photo club that has practice sessions every week and it is 99% studio shots with "models",  I go twice or maybe once per month. Outside the club opportunities for portraits are much less,  my wife also does not enjoy having her photo taken , but a couple of cowerkers have asked me to take photos of them, when it happens then I'll use natural light must of the time

Armando, I have always envied your Photo Club.  In today's India , being a foreigner shooting Indian women is touchy.  A good friend, Goan, is one of India's top fashion designers and I used to be able to shoot his Catwalk models but no control in those situations.  These days he doesn't often have shows locally  :( .  Some time back I posted an image of two Russian Showgirls at the beach.  I should have been more forward and approached them  ;) .  They obviously did not mind being photographed.

Love the portrait. Framing with the black background makes him pop. Attitude and expression...would male it iconic Hollywood. Much more visual dinamics in lighting, framin, contrast, posture makes for a stronger image than the others of the same guy, I think.

Paco, thanks and I agree , Thanks Anthony.  Armando, that works and often do that when travelling and longer lenses.  Unfortunately the unusual stuff that I enjoy catching can happen in less than ideal situations so that is when I wing it.  Some time back I was driving on a small, busy highway by the river and saw a fantastic scene (on a stormy day) with shafts of sunlight hitting one of the 400 year old Churches on a hill across the river.  Like a Master of light had painted it.  There was just no way to stop.  A couple of hundred metres down I could pull off but the clouds had closed.  Total one off and Biblical  :)
Cheers,
Tom
This is the scene I was left with.  The left most Church is the one with the light.

Here is one from yesterday, walking on the street looking for spots to shoot, we asked for permission to shoot in the pool place, what's the right term in english ? in spanish we just say billiard - "billar"

Very nice photo, great lighting.

The game being played is pool - the bands on some of the balls show this.

Billiards is played with no more than three balls on the table, sometimes only two.  It is not so popular these days, having long been overtaken in much of the world by snooker, which has fifteen red balls and six balls of other colours.

Whoops, need to go back and re-visit panning.  My son had a Course assignment to shoot some Panning so we went up to the highway at rush hour.   This was shot with D500, 70-200f4G, vr on,f4 at 1/40.   I have not panned for quite a while.   Looks like the Pillion rider was bouncing up and down  ;) .  Trying to pan with EVF has always been much more difficult than OVF, for me, so he had a tough time getting good ones with EM1,A7rii .     At least he learned that it is not that easy and he needs practice  :) .   I did not do very well with the a7iii  :(

A trained dancer can poise like a beautiful statue, and you capture the very moment!

I might want to raise the shadow a wee bit more, even though the final result is a high-contrast image, in order to make the entire shape of the body and costume a bit more visible.

Yup Carl, that double jack requires no external power other than what you see...

Adequate personnel on the job at public works projects seems to be a world wide phenomenon.

Indeed, and that tool in the driver's back pocket will no doubt do in a pinch.....

Armando, I really like this image and having to really think about how best to describe what it makes me feel.  The pier , solitary bird, boat and the expanse of distance/hills.  Abandoned , Forgotten, Time Stood Still, Lost Forever, all spring to mind.  What does not come to mind is beautiful landscape.     Many thanks for posting.

Difficult to explain too. There is a quality of oneiric and spiritual. Strong symbols, minimal approach and no reference as per where it is. Missing parts... Very compelling image.

Event shooting, I wonder how his image worked out :) ?     I expect the Z6 to work out for these shots but missed the last Event.  This was Sony a7rii with 35 f2.8 (yup J.A.) .  I've been using that lens on the Z6 as my 'pancake' .   The guy was just warming up and I was busy shooting a female singer and band warming up behind me with the 85 1.8 on different body.   Guess it could go in the 'Shoot 'em in the back...' theme  ;) .  It was a real &W day , sun going down and overcast.

This guy tired me out watching him.  He did the 130 steps from a Yoga school to the Ganges non-stop on 40+ C.   No idea what the water was used for since the Ganges is pretty dirty  (being polite) .  His expression never changed in the four days I was there.  His break was cleaning cooking/eating utensils at the river.  I'm just getting around to working on most of the Pen F images,  This was a frame filler with the 75 f1.8.   Good trip but way too hot.

Thank you, Hugh.  This is a rare case where an appearance of blurred motion was actually captured with a high-enough shutter speed to freeze motion.  The spray looked soft and smeared out to my eyes when I was there, and was in motion so I didn't really see the "sprayed grain" effect.

This is the second of two photos I want to present from that trip:

Francis, nice Street image.  Surprised no one walking while on their mobile phone.   I suddenly have quite a few 50 mm lenses including VM Nocton 50 1.5 and ZM C Sonnar 50 1.5.  Two very different lenses.  I have had buyers for both for some time but could never make up my mind which to sell.   I also have Loxia 50 f2 and now the 50 1.8S.  I also have several Nikon 50mm and the 58 1.4G.   Need to get some gear funds for potential 70-200 2.8S or a future 105 mm f? S.

Which adapter are you using for your Leica?  I'm pretty happy with the Kipon dumb adapter on the Z6.
Cheers,

My LM/Z adaptor (no name) comes from retro photographic on ebay UK at the price of £25.95. Probably a Chinese one but sent from UK, so I didn't wait for ages to get it. I am happy with it : well machined and sturdy.

I recently bought a leica R/Z Pixco adaptor, but no so happy with it, as it has slight play in both sides. ???

Tom - had the Zeiss Sonnar ZM which I sold after using friends APO-Summicron. Was saving up for this but in meantime have been very impressed by the 50 1.8S so much so that I’m probably not going to get any other 50s.

I’ve got 3 Leica adaptors - Novoflex, K+F - cheaper but actually beautifully machined, and Yeenon, a version of the Shoten close focus adaptor. If I had to choose one, I’d go the close focus adaptor.

Thanks Francis,  I have had very bad results using two different Pixco adapters.  The Kipon is working well,  JJ's mention of the Yeenon, a version of the Shoten close focus adaptor caught me by surprise.  I have the VM Close Focus and Shoton Close Focus adapters for LM-Sony E.   Will have to take a look.  Was waiting for a VM -NZ bit the Shoton is a good adapter.   Thanks JJ  :) .  I also recommend the K&F Concept to young photogs on a budget.  I have one setting in front of me for LM-FX which my wife picked up in the UK for one of the young guys to use some of my lenses on his XT-3.

JJ
I will probably keep either the ZM or VM 50 1.5.  I can use either with the Techart for AF on Sony bodies.   I have to make decisions over the weekend on quite a few lenses. I now have 6 people waiting for images and prices on all.  The only one's I think are safe are the VM 35 Ultron 1.7, Summarit 75 2.5, ZM 85 Tele-Tessar f4 and the VM 15 4.5 III.   I would really like to see a smallish, native S 180 or 200 for the Z.   I really do not need anything and the only hint of GAS/NAS is the rumoured D780.   Finding a Cron 50 in India (other than new from Leica) is very problematic  ;) .
All the best,
Tom

Looks like an ink painting which I love.  The darkening gradient towards the left corner is nicely in balance with the heron on the branch.

From Sunday's Event.  Friend of my son's put on a Dancing Show for all of the old folk  :) .   I had lots of time to play with shutter speeds.  This is with a7iii, Batis 85 at f1.8, 1/80.   1/640 seemed to be the sweet spot but all depended on tempo of the music so sometimes went to 1/1000.  Trying to get blur on the hair and face sharp.   Good fun  ;D    A Zillion ways to PP.

During the 2019 NG Meet-up in The Haguge, Netherlands, we visited Vivek Iyer and his charming wife. During the pleasant visit he gave me a monochrome-converted NEX-5N.

I have used it mainly with an IR filter for IR b/w. One lens that makes the camera small (it is already tiny, but a big lens would change its appearance) is the vintage 3.5cm f/1.8 W-Nikkor for the Nikon rangefinder line. The W-Nikkor is very sharp and matches well the NEX-5N. It also has no hot spots in IR.

From Oslo today. ARW file run through Mono2DNG, then tweaked in Photoshop. Focus is not perfect as the focus peaking on this Sony isn't very good. But it is OK enough.

Is there any idea of using yellow, orange or red filters when shooting for BW?
You do all that doing post processing of the color raw file?
What if the camera has been BW modified?

To answer the last question: if the camera is modified to be monochrome, it pays to process the RAW in a special converter. For example, Monochrome2DNG, which is the one I use for my NEX-5N Monochrome camera.

Using some kind of filtration to cut down on blue etc. has a long-standing history for film-based b/w. If the camera is not true monochrome, I would not use a filter as this effectively would lower the attainable resolution. Instead, emulate the effect later in post-processing. For a monochrome camera, it makes sense to use a filter to reduce brightness of sky or selectively bring out skin rendition.  I often use a deep yellow, orange, or red filter on my NEX-5N, if not going the whole way into IR with an IR-filter.

Post by: Birna Rørslett on May 16, 2020, 21:54:08
Using a B+W 093 IR filter (roughly equivalent to Wratten 87C) makes IR capture more or less monochrome from the get-go.  Thus rendering these files in true b/w later is a small, and logical, next step.

Here is an example using this filter on a Nikkor-T 105mm f/4 lens with my IR-modified Nikon D5300.
