So I'm off :D I have packed/overfilled my camera bags and have started on this journey to The Black Forrest (Schwarzwald) in South-West Germany via The Hague where Jakov et al is waiting with a new lens 'we have never used' quite a statement looking forward to see what that could be ::) ;D
To add to the suspension I have added a new tool 8) for various chipping, tinkering, lens repairs and now a special Short-K1 is in the works - Nice to have something besides post processing during the evenings at the hotel...
I will use the next days to acclimatize myself from the busy workdays of the summer and get into NikonGear mode i.e. creative photography mode, last few months have been filled by fantastic new impressions from new and old members here – I’m really inspired by some fantastic skillful people here not only seasoned pros but also people just enjoying creating photographs and sharing them!
Looking forward to seeing familiar and new faces again, the NG-workshop has started!
-
Lets go, lets go!!
-
Overloaded gear bags, tinkering tools; we are evidently off to a good start Erik.
See you all shortly. Off early tomorrow to meet Jan Anne in Amsterdam
-
Erik, from the amount of lenses that I see that you are carrying, my photo bag will be very light ;D
I am excited about our 1st NikonGear Revival GetTogether!!!
-
Bringing Something; Long, normal, wide, close and Fishy as well as a set for IR so this is very selective... :P
Also not bringing the Leica M this time... :-\
-
Also not bringing the Leica M this time... :-\
You can have a play with my M, the BMW 130i M ;)
Have a good flight and see you Friday.
-
... the NG-workshop has started!
Only 2 more days for me. I won't be bringing as much stuff as most of you, simply because ... i don't have as much stuff as most of you 8).
Andrew, John and i travel together and target to be in the hotel around 16.00 (or thereabouts), so you won't be alone for too long ;)
See you all there !!
-
I wish I could have been there!
Have a good, enjoyable and memorable time!
-
I'm sure there will be full and thoroughly documented reports posted every day!
-
HCS: I'll be arriving very lightly equipped as well. Df with 20, 35, Noct, 105, and 300 PF. The 105 might be a 105/4 Micro. For IR the modified D5300 with 16/2.8 Fish, and 18-70 AFS. Both can share a 100/1.6 Rodenstock Heligon.
-
I will bring the Heligon 100/1.6, and probably the 20, 45, 80, 50-135 and something long.... Not sure yet.....
-
Which 80 would that be, John? The AF 80/2.8 for F3AF?
-

Bjørn, i'm kind of impressed. I mean ... i've seen the boot of your little red Peugeot. I was secretly wondering how you would get all of that in JA's Beemer, but turns out, you don't :D
I'm still doubting to bring my flash case with bits 'n' pieces flash related (flashes, gels, etc.). Is that something worthwhile?
-
Which 80 would that be, John? The AF 80/2.8 for F3AF?
Yes, AF won't work so it acts as an AIS lens. But it's a real gem, to my idea.
-
Have you removed the old CPU? It can shorten the camera battery because the pin-out is different from the modern lenses. I can replace the CPU with a new type so it'll register correctly and meter on all Nikons. No AF though as the AF system of the old lenses for F3AF (80/2.8, 200/3.5) was designed in a different manner.
Optically this is an excellent performer as you already have noticed.
-
I haven't touched the CPU, the lens looked brand new when I received it. Just clicked it on in manual mode and it worked like any Ai or Ai-S. Didn't notice a different battery behavior on the D700 and Df. Perhaps the pin-out is removed? I am not really that technical. ;) If the CPU-operation is simple, yes please.
-
I have spare parts with me, so at least we can take a closer look.
When I got my 80/2.8 AF (many years ago), it short-circuited the battery of my D2X within a few hours. The reason is that Nikon has changed the positions of the power and grounding pins for the modern lenses. If the CPU and contact block are replaced all is well except for the AF, which cannot work on a modern Nikon.
-
Thanks for the offer and information.
On the Net is hardly any information about this lens (with regard to field-experience) apart from your review. But it's a chapter of the 'Nikkor - The Thousand and One Nights' http://www.nikkor.com/story/0023/ (http://www.nikkor.com/story/0023/)
-
I was secretly wondering how you would get all of that in JA's Beemer, but turns out, you don't :D
Getting all Bjørns lenses in a Beemer would be a challenge indeed, luckily I have a Bimmer with room for Bjørn and all the lenses he can carry 8)
Probably only a handful of BMW owners will get this joke, for the rest of us:
- Bimmer: BWM car
- Beemer: BMW motorcycle
- Beamer: Projector used to project images or movies on a white screen or wall
Its like saying your Nikon E lens is a Nikkor ;D
-

I have the feeling there is a lot to learn for me over the next couple of days, not just photography ;D
I didn't know that, so i offer my sincere apologies. I am not one of the in-crowd ???
-
...oh lord woncha buy me a mersaydeez benz...my friends all drive bimmers...I must make amends....
-
One is El Presidente!
And we will see how the BMW does on the German Autobahn against the modest old car from Inglostad!
-
And we will see how the BMW does on the German Autobahn against the modest old car from Inglostad!
260 last time I checked 8)
Something tells me however that your S8 drives a lot more relaxed above 200 than my tiny Bimmer which becomes quite a handful at those speeds :o
-
Plus the poor passenger feels not that at ease ... been there before ....
-
a small delay in air traffic but landed safely in Amsterdam and was greeted in Deen Haag by Jakov who took me to see a strange performance, the same movements repeated again and again, looked like great fun and for sure was fun to shoot ;D
-
And here a portrait of Jakov shot of and with.... the Heligon - captured with 58mm 1.4 D3X
-
Just landed in NL and picked up at Schipol by Jan Anne. A few more morning coffee cups and I'm ready to join the throng :D
-
Erik, I love that bowling image! Really cool!!!
-
Super-shots, Erik. A kind of Dutch inspiration? ;)
-
Thanks ;)
I will have to work more on the dutch colors I see... :D
-
Those two photos are very promising for the upcoming flood of photos of the trip!
Creative shots!
-
Can't wait gents, clock's a ticking !!!
-
So today a had a little fun with Jakov's new mystery lens... Trying to get it to show it's true character...
First up is 'Pink Memories' it's a last remembrance of a loved one passed.
I like the rendering here, sort of dreamy and creamed but with bite in the bg
-
Next up is 'Circles' it's quite obvious what is going on with the Back Ground Bokeh, the out of focus highlights get bright edges and Cat's eye shaped...
-
'Rectangles' tricks the back ground into highlights along the straight edges, very nice effect
-
Erik:
Great shots, all threee of them. The bowling shot esp. inspiring, the dreamy pink bike reminds me of the Grachten in Gent, where people park their decorated bikes like that, and Jakovs eye portrait is a complicated construction to a good pictorial end. Keep them coming!
Another two since I posted this, so: Your work with the background alignment is esp. visible in the "green grey V". Is the FG also part of a children's playground as the other?
-
'The Cats Eye Knot' My favorite shot from today shoving the true nature of the lens, the small rain droplets give a feeling of scale,,,
All images here are shot at Max aperture - the lens changes character immediately when stopped down; Contrast goes up and the cloud cover disappears...
-
'Hanging by the chains' The rending of the chains is a clear indicator.
-
'Green and Eyes' Shot into trees filled with lights and oncoming car headlights..
-
'A Studs Dream' What to say :D Anyway the stopped down image looks way different...
-
'Coffee Shop' Well... it's actually a Coffee Shop... ::)
-
I LOVE this Coffee Shop foto. So cool!!
And Bowling Man is also a terrific capture of motion.
Added later: Is the lens a Petzval maybe? Just guessing!
-
I suggest more people join in before revealing the lens ;)
Thanks for the comments Andrea and Frank, appreciated :D
'Books & Bikes'...
-
I got three candidates:
Helios 40-2
Biotar 58 or 75
Petzval
-
I am jealous of this lens now!
And I am also jealous of the fact that everybody is mentioning the bowling photo but not the bowler :'(
-
Looks like a TS capable engine. New Mystery? There are some Russian options ... German options ... and there
was a Russian German Co production once. Seen it a photokina ... there was also a website ... daughter whining
deletes my thoughts.... I had the name but gone...
-
https://luminous-landscape.com/hartblei-superrotator/
Google is not irritated by Daughter...
-
Frank that Hartblei looks great, I wish...
And too sharp for me :)
-
http://www.hartblei.de/en/tech1.htm
The Ukranian manufacturer does not have any stock. But there seems to be a German in Munic
distributing Hartblei Mechanics with Zeiss Optics. These are the lenses I saw on photokina.
Not sure about the prices. But at least I found the link.
-
Frank I would gladly buy it, but I doubt that I can afford such a lens...
I wonder how much it would cost?
I didn't understand the description properly, does it mean that it is in fact an 80mm or 90mm lens on FX?
It would be really be great to try it :)
-
Jay, we're there, John and i. We've met Andrew already and wifi is working!
Let the fun begin ;D ;D ;D
-
Jakov: the focal length is an optical invariant. 80 mm is 80 mm always.
And yes, this is a confirmation that Jan Anne and I arrived and the wi-fi is working.
-
During the frankly rather tedious 700 km drive from Amsterdam to Frankfurt, we discussed Jakov's secret lens and concluded correctly its origin, focal length (to within 10 mm) and aperture.
-
And the lens is?
-
Zenit 85/1.5, Sten you guessed it ;)
We arrived at Schwarzwald, we had dinner, and for desert my newly acquired 180/2.8 ED is being modified.
The photo attached depicts the common anesthesia and in the background one can notice Dr Udo Brinkman and Schwester Elke hand in hand performing the surgery. How romantic.
(EDIT: I had to add reference for those who don't know the German soap series Die Schwarzwaldklinik, where Dr Udo and Schwester Elke star. Enthusiasts are free to search it on the web and enjoy it)
-
Its a Russian! Yea.
-
The 180/2.8 works. Here is a romantic photo of Dr Udo Brinckman to prove it :)
-
Jacov's 180 is in for 'chipping'
-
It's about time now the nikon-istas turn in and call it a day. More to follow tomorrow.
-
Barrelling down the Autobahn with BMW and Jan Anne pushing the revs into the 7000s requires stern stuff for the motor. So JA was extremely happy to find a petrol station offering 100% proof fluid for his thirsty car. Later we had to stop for refilling of oil of course as the strained engine drank a lot of that as well.
-
Hadn't expected to see a sign like this in the politically oh so correct Germany ('Frauenparkplatze=Parking for ladies')
-
There is even a "Männerparkplatz" in Germany but this is really p.i. stuff: look up "Triberg Schwarzwald Männerparkplatz". I do not dare to post a link here, esp. the "search for pictures"

Some impressions of last night's operation.
-
Susanne - where is Bjørn's bananas??
-
She immediately ordered some from the waiter ... can't let the bear run out of steam.
-
All taken care of, not to worry. ;)
-
Especially with a nice breakfast-room ...
-
Some characters from Freiburg...
-
Second part...
That all for now!
-
Ok, my catch of today
-
It was an extremely productive day in Freiburg. 8)
-
No day is perfect without bananas.

The sky over Freiburg. :)

Sunflowers are probably my favorite flower!
Here are a few of them found in Freiburg.
Needless to say that I couldn't get them sharp despite my talents ::)

Jakov!! Those sunflower shots are really something else. Love them!!

Frank we are here until Wednesday. I'd love to meet you!
-
Not as bitingly sharp or tasteful though, love :-*
true - but I think your sunflowers will last longer than a banana in his hands...
-
Some group-activity in Freiburg...
-
coolest community on this planet
-
Susanne was here, then there, then here and there. Not easy to get a sharp image of, in particular when you don't look in the view finder. But I always try to do my utmost.
-
Bjørn shot this one of Jakov in the heart of Freiburg.

Could not resist 8)

Your patented style Jacov. Love it! Is the first sunflower a multiple exposure shot?
-
Tons of great photos. Thanks everyone for sharing!
-
Interesting to see the 80mm/2.8 fits the Df.
-
My single camera/lens for the occasion: Nikon Df, 55 mm f3.5 Micro-Nikkor AI.
Due to physical constraints of the day, quite selective today. Much of the stuff done at high to very high ISO settings.
This is a very close study of the frond and pinnae of a Scaly Male Fern (Dryopteris affinis). A "moderate" 10100 ISO this time as there was some light present ...
-
Another with the Df + 55/3.5 Micro combination. This time from Baden-Baden.

We went for a drive to France today and visited the city of Colmar, while in search of something to eat we stumbled on some left over drinks in an interesting place.
This is the first real spin with the Zeiss 35/1.4 FE and I'm really falling in love, really like the out of focus rendering and boke.
Those whom look closely should recognise the Bear in the image somewhere btw.

Jakov, you look cool with blue hair !!!!!
-
Here are a few more images of castle Brug Hohenzollern we visited yesterday.
I am still busy processing images from all days.
It gets quite hectic when you're on a trip like this and you almost always end up with a back log of images.
But that's good and that is why I am here. To enjoy the company of friends, to make images in abundance and most importantly to learn how to make sharp images :)
-
Mr John Geerts, took many images of me, so I think it's time I post an image of himself at work :)

whatever you did - it works.
When I look at an image - I also think "large" - and if you can picture it large in your mind - it makes so much more of an impact
some images just lean itself to be printed very big - and both these do in my opinion.

hummm, Domaine Weinbach, I have fond and amused memories of Madame Faller... Here wine is one of the benchmarks in Alsace, as taught to me by one of my friend who was studying oenology when we were in our very early twenties.
I am originated from Alsace but knew nearly nothing about wine at that time and an older friend of mine, and Englishman, asked me to tour some wineries during a week-end. So naturally we went to Mrs Faller's extremely beautiful farm near Ribeauvillé, almost a castle, me wearing red shorts and driving my already old and not so well maintained FIAT Uno. We parked on the gravel just on the front door and were greated by a very pretty maid in standard B&W maid dress, who asked us to wait in the reception room whose walls were covered with pictures on a bald man (Monsieur Faller) shaking hands with all the presidents of the French's 5th Republic (the list consisted of de Gaulle, Pompidou, Giscard d'Estaing, Mitterand and Chirac at that time). The maid said that Madame would come down to meet us and indeed, after nearly an hour an aged but extremely elegant woman (I still remember her incredible dress) appeared and welcomed us with nice words.
When she figured out who we were and what we were here for (to taste her wine!), she understood that the business potential was not what she had expected and we were immediately taken to the kitchen where we generously got the opportunity to taste her Riesling. Again, I had no understanding of wine and especially lacked the words to describe it, so when she asked me what I thought about it I said I liked it because it was liquorous. Of course now I know that this is totally inappropriate, as she taught me by yelling at me in a manner not really matching the elegance of her dress. At some point she nearly collapsed...
We took advantage of this to leave as quick as we could and were not given a chance to purchase a bottle, what a pity!
This was the day when I decided to learn more about wine, and especially its vocabulary.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to think again about that very good day we had in the vineyard...

Speedily travel with Jan Anne's beamer back to Amsterdam. Not too many roadblocks and we arrived around the ETA for a change.
While we were slowly navigating the streets of Köln (Cologne), I spotted a shabby photo store and Erik, the designated BMW driver at the moment, obligingly pulled over. A few minutes later I had acquired a near pristine 50 mm f/1.4 Nikkor AI. Later, back at Jan Anne's place, CPU modification is under way and the new power tool of Erik is singing its high-pitched whine again. OK, the new lens just has to have its CPU programmed and we're good to go :D Off to pizza in a few minutes.
-
Erik, it was Colette Faller, as seen on the label you show.
Does it mean she is still around? She must be extremely aged now!
Next time I see her I will tell her her wine is delicious because of its greasy taste.
-
The "new" 50 mm f/1.4 AI Nikkor has joined the CPU club. Thanks to Erik for another example of workmanship and wizardry.

We didn't meet any of the family members, but sadly we saw a grave in the backyard, a too you member of the family passed last year; 1967-2014... Daughter maybe?
-
Sad story indeed. A quick search indicates that Madame Faller died this year at the age of 85, and that her daughter (whose grave you have seen) died last year. This young woman was actually running the estate with her sister.
There goes my desire to joke...
-
The place caught our attention for the high recommendations of the wines and the age of the Monastery; Goes back to year 890... Says a lot. Well worth a visit, Vine, Estate with the surrounding vine fields.
Thanks for looking up the family! Sad story indeed.

Sorry Frank, I am already taken!

Shot in front of the winery, reflections of the main building can be seen in the rear of the car.

Giving more light to the old history of the vineyards ...

The vineyards were a very nice and inspiring place to be.
Here is my view :)

Amsterdam in October Sun

Erik, it's a great shot!
Even greater is the fact that you are wearing Adidas ;D
I hope you guys are having a great time in Amsterdam, and I wish you a pleasant journey home!

Thanks for the great company!!!

Super shots from Amsterdam ;)

Let me show you yet another flower image illustrating the superior optical quality and design of the Helios (Zenit 85/1.5) coupled with my vast experience in acquiring bitingly sharp images ::)
Don't ask me how I managed to provoke a rainbow and the black hole on the bottom part of the image. The only thing I do know is that I was shooting into the sun - Helios :D
Perhaps it was the wine tasting that blurred my vision...

Well ... two can play that game, didn't even need the exotic lens :o 8) I can't do it with a flower though :P
TFBoTN (the fierce bear of the North) and even you, hidden in the rainbow. Andrew in the bg.
-
Hans, you did use an exotic lens but more importantly your photographic skills. Great image.
I can hardly wait to see more!

I have a few portraits of master photographers :)

Thanks Jakov.
I'll post more images, but i'll be away for the next week for work. So, it'll have to wait. By that time this thread will probably need some "freshen up" :)

Usually I read about special nature events the day after in the news papers but with so many photogs in one place I was informed in time for a change ;D
Hans borrowed me his 300/4 to which I mounted my universal spare Arca plate, dressed accordingly and of course the mandatory passing around of the Laphroaig bottle did the rest of keeping us warm during the cold night while strengthening our comradeship.
While my compadres where very busy running around with flowers to do cool multiple exposures I concentrated on dialling in the settings with a unfamiliar lens and enjoyed the phenomena as much as possible while pressing the shutter in regular intervals.
So not as creative as the other moon images but more as a prove that I was out there in the field as well with Bjørn, Erik and Jakovic ;)

A sparkling vineyard. Next time we must visit Champagne!
-
Very very sparkling, Jakov ;)
Here is a part of the Domaine Faller - Castle ;)
-
I'll post some vine yard shots later (other than the rainbow one above), but first have to get some others out of the way.
For example, i went with Jakov and Suse to a monastery. If you ask me, we had a blast that day (not just because Jakov had a blast in El Presidente), i thought it was genuinely nice. So, without further ado, Jakov at work and Suse at work.
-
Of course, i had a blast shooting pictures of the monastery too.
The chapel and one of the towers of the ruins.
-
And one last one, from another trip with the whole bunch, especially one for Bjørn. Not one, but two red cars (albeit not Peugeots).
-
This is a wonderfully lit pouring shot with a good selection of background and lines.
Thanks Frank, really appreciated.
The image is a little staged btw to get the proper light and to remove distractions in the background, this time without two senior members stealing my shot BEFORE I could take my own image ;D :P
-
The two red cars are hilarious! What a catch, Hans!
The multiple exposures are also impressive!
Of course, the best shot was the one with that person in yellow ;)
-
Few more from me

Common disease in Freiburg/multi exposure. That my contribution.

You've caught a rare and special moment with the shot of JA in the Bimmer/Bummer/Boomer. He's not even doing 2000 RPM. Rare indeed 8) 8) 8)
-
I thought the beamer/bummer/bumper doesn't get driven below 2000 RPMs :)
Andrew, nice portraits and multiple exposures!
-
Thank you, thank you!
yes under 2000 rpms, that was traffic jam on autobahn...

I know the problem. Went to many wine tastings with cameras, totally redecorating the scene for best pictorial effect. First time people complained, after seeing the results, the were happy to help next time *ggg*
-
Still enjoying the thread.
Almass, am looking forward to the "Episode 3"!
-
Erik, do you mind to tell what software was used for Planet shot...
Thanx!
-
The 'Planets' can now be done directly in PtGui Pro Version.
Until then I have use Photoshop for it...
-
I denied myself access to this thread for a while, it was bound to make me way too envious. Thanks for sharing so many great images, way to many to comment on, but it's clear (just as I expected) that you all had a great time. Keep the images comming!

+1 +1 +1 +1 . . . . repeat ad infinitum

Since Hans posted shots of Jakov and me at work (when we visited Hirsau), it is only fair to show him at work too.
PS: I'll stop with the lens flare eventually. ;)

One more from the bottom of the barrel....
Jakob's sunflowers with 16mm fish and red filter -build in.
-
Ah, my sunflowers :)
-
Yes, in full adoration ;)
-
Good to see the photos and read about your gathering! Thanks for sharing.
-
John, you are a true paparazzi!
I had no clue that you were taking all these pictures of me :)
-
Hahahaha Jakov. This was really unintentional. Just was trying to focus with the 200mm on those sunflowers close to the hotel before the Colmar departure, when you suddenly walked into the focus-screen.
-
Can't you see that I have ennobled your photo ;)
-
Yes, you prevented the shredder-processing ;)

Shouldn't we plan for another one of those?

The last one was great fun.
I think I could do the first weekend of November, but definitely not the second weekend.

Very nice, The Hague Photo Race was a lot of fun.
I dare to remind that we had, for a long time, a visit to Airy in Lille on our Agenda, listening to him play the pipe organ for us!!!!
My situation in my hometown Bonn is currently not good for a visit here, more work than I can bare, but it will soon be better as the house gets out of its critical phase and the excavators and borers will excavate and drill, the crane will rise and uplift the building blocks etc. Autumn next year shall be a great time for a visit to Bonn in the Beethoven-Year 2020!!!!
