Custom Settings -> f2 custom controls -> navigate to vertical AF-ON button (the selected button shown in yellow on the tiny menu preview) by repeated pressing right side of multiselector -> Same as AF-ON -> press Menu to confirm. That's it.

I tried it every-which-way-but Sunday and it never took. By "multi-selector" I think you mean that which has the "OK" in the center. I tried that, plus the "OK", and both toggles....to the right and never got it to take...or even to highlight the "AF-ON" option of the two. Something I must be doing wring.
Thanks for the help, anyway.

Multiselector is the one with 'OK' in its centre.
Can you move anything with it, say the focus point? Check if it has been locked.

Is the release button locked?

I locked mine when I kept taking shots accidentally with the heel of my hand. It could be this.
