December is very dark in my part of the world before snow firmly covers the ground. The occasional street and house lights do their best to enlighten the winter darkness.

Chilled solanum plant
A relative to the tomato plants, this one was planted either by birds or by the wind in my terrace, and fruits ripened until a few days ago. Now a freezing weather and copious rain have arrived, and this plant is a little stressed. As the name says, just like tomatoes it likes sunny weather!
Iphone SE, 2nd Gen, in Portrait Mode (very useful for having the main subject stand out from the background). 1st Gen wasn't having this feature.
(yes, I've changed my phone, now that they've introduced the 3rd Gen, they are giving away the 2nd Gen for cheaps... especially the 256GB version) :)

Earlier this month saw me appointed to a National Expert Validators Group for the Norwegian national obervation and recording system for biological species. I'm joining the Vascular Plant Validators Group. We spent the weekend in an intercalibration assessment and standardisation meeting. I'm dealing mainly with aquatic plants.
Most partipants are grey-haired veterans in the field. And me as the point of contrast :)

After a visit to the retinal specialist last week, my wife picked me up and we stopped off at a barbeque shop on the way home. My eyes were dilated and I was barely able to open them despite wearing my darkest sunglasses. While I waited for my wife in the car, I noticed this lady come up and sit on the bench out front. Her T-shirt reads "Happy To Be Home for The Holidays" and I thought the framing in the open car door was interesting. D700 with Nikkor 35/2 AI lens. Kinda difficult to focus given the circumstances.

In Japan, we call a lady in a group of men "a red dot". This is an exemplary example!

Open door, open sign, close body. There is also contrast with the curves and straight iines fighting to get the protagonism on the frame. There is also the obvious contrast in b&w. Intricate composition makes you have to implicate yourself to watch the woman. A point of "veyour" and a point of getting in your shoes (your point of view). All and all an engaging image.

The last years, up to 90% of the sales of new cars have been of the electric kind. So the traditional petrol stations have to diversify their products to cater for alternative demands. For example, by selling chopped firewood :).... A commodity in great demand at present with ambient temperatures dropping into the -10 to -20 oC range.
Nikon Z9,Viltrox13mm f/1.4 lens. I like the 'neat' combination, by the way. The Viltrox 13mm is excellent in optical terms, has very low chromatic aberrations, and with the Z9 I get nice 20MPix files which suffice in many cases.

Today I visited the National Air Museum. Purpose was a shoot-out between both rented Nikkor Z 14-24mm f2.8 S and Nikkor 17-28mm f2.8.
No surprise here, the 14-24mm wins. Being almost 2x the price it better should!

Same here in Australia. However the price of chopped wood in such outlets seems quite exorbitant to me.

Interesting views for you, Paco.
-
Meanwhile the winter darkness has descended upon us in my part of the world. Snow is not plentiful yet but according to the weather forecast we'll see plenty of it later today. In the early morning, there is almost no light necessitating high ISO to get anything useful captured. I'm grounded for the time being due to low ambient temperatures (in the -15 to -20C range) and a bad combination of cold-induced asthma and arthritis. Not recommendable. Not at all.
Kitchen view with the Z fc and the weird AF 80mm f/2.8 Nikkor. This lens is sharp and despite its not very sophisticated optics, low in chromatic aberrations, and among the star options for IR. Handling is slow due to the AF mechanism which is not properly decoupled in manual focusing mode, however.

Hi Fons, distortion is minimal it's a really great lens. I like the versatility of the 14-24mm and would feel limited by a prime. I'm not sure though if I'll find enough usage for an ultra-wide to warrant a purchase.

Merry Christmas, Christian!
Good to know you enjoyed your time in Japan. :)
Mt. Fuji hasn't erupted since 1707, but there have been small fumarolic gas observed many times. Also, we've had countless small earthquakes caused by the volcano. So, Mt. Fuji is one of 111 volcanoes in Japan that are classified as "active".

Serious Request is a yearly fundraising event for "The Forgotten Child", hosted by radio station 3FM in the week before Christmas.
During the Dutch 3FM Serious Request, three radio DJs of the national channel (NPO) 3FM are locked up for six days in a small temporary radio studio (the "Glass House").
It is placed in a main square in a different city each year. They aren't allowed to eat anything; instead, they drank water, juice, and other liquids to stay energized.
The DJs make an interactive, themed broadcast around the clock, while regular programming on the station is suspended.
Instead, 3FM and its website are completely dedicated to the event, which is also transmitted as a continuous audio and video live-stream.
Funds are raised in a few different ways. DJs play songs requested by listeners and visitors, in return for their donations.
Celebrities and artists also donate personal possessions or offer unique opportunities to meet them, which are auctioned off.
Straightforward donations are made into the project's bank account, and by physical visitors depositing cash and cheques into the house's letterbox.
This years edition was in my hometown, Amersfoort. Note to myself, next time bring a polarizing filter ;)

It's been a while, very busy in the removing process. My old house is sold now, had an accident on the stairs with a few wounds. Slowly recovering now.
Ouch!
Fascinating vase John

evening stroll,
first quarter moon
Zfc, Viltrox 23mm f/1.4

Why call it first quarter ( yes I know that is what it is called) when twice that is a full moon? Makes no sense.
Makes even less sense to call the waning quarter the third quarter ..... what happened to the second quarter?

Relative from the earthside first quarter, 2nd quarter, similar to full moon, third quarter waning moon, fourth quarter or new moon is no moon.
Moon's course is 28 or 29 days, which in the antique world was a mo(o)nth, thus moonphases are weeks.

Chris, isn't what you are calling a "full" moon only one side of it?!
After all, we only ever see half of the whole moon and only half of it is ever fully illuminated by the sun....
:P
-
Absolutely - but the naming is a bit like saying the phases are no apples, 1 apple, 1 orange, 3 apples....
It only starts to make a little sense if you refer to the moon's orbit around the earth - new, one quarter, one half, three quarters. Then some bright spark ignored the orbit and called the half point a full moon which makes the quarters nonsense ....
