You have Olga doing something relatively mundane and yet it compels the eye. The shallow depth of field really focuses attention on her.
Another thing that intrigues me is your processing. Your black-and-white seems to have decent contrast and yet avoids much, if any white. How do you do it?
-
Thanks Ian.
There is no trick with the bw conversion. It starts with one of my usual presets and then some (very) little tweaking. What you see here is the combination of the street in shadow and her in the light. The clouds were covering the sun changing constantly from strong contrast to diffuse light. This is somewhere in between of the extremes. Notice the subtle shadow of her in the tarmac

It seems modern nikkors like the 28/1.4 gives an old contender as the D3s a second life colours are so good

I just got this framed picture from the shop. It is the wonderful image of Japanese Maikos by my friend Dave Paterson, who kindly gave me the image as a gift when we met in Kilin earlier this year. Now the picture stands in its protective wrapping while I await Ruth's return from her present project lecture trip, so we can decide the best spot for it. Thank you, thank you, Dave.

Great capture John! How do you find the 58G on the Z9 with regards to focus speed? I tried it with the 1st version of the Nikon F>Z adapter but thought it was very slow. I've also seen reports that the lens performs better on the mirrorless bodies with regards to sharpness (improved focus accuracy I guess). What's your experience?
-
Obviously, I don't get out to do a lot of photography anymore so the standard dog portrait will have to do. 70-200/2.8S.

I've regressed to my beginnings in photography...at least lens wise. Now I have the four Nikkor lenses I started out with when I began using Nikons in the early '70s. Well, almost. I did substitute the 105mm for the 85mm since I prefer that focal length. I love the way these old Nikkors render more than any of the AF models. Of course, I have ancient eyes and manually focusing is sometimes a bit difficult. I do manage pretty well with the green dot focus confirmation's help.
Do you know how hard it is to take a sharp picture of this little mutt with a manual focus lens? She is a hyperactive terrier who never learned to walk--she runs. She took this pose and I wanted to photograph her but she only held it for about a half second. I called her back and proceeded to say "Sit!" and "Stay!" and "Wait!" about a dozen times until she finally held the pose long enough for me to focus and click. Done at ƒ/2.8 with the pre-AI Nikkor 24mm ƒ/2.8 on a D810. ISO of 5000.
"Good dog!"

Focus is pretty fast on the Z-camera's. No focus slow down on the Z6 and Z9 (and Z) in comparison with DSLR's (it was never a speed monster)
The lens performs much better on the Mirrorless bodies, improved focus accuracy indeed, and that shows immediately the strengths of the lens. It is also a great benefit to focus zoom on the mirrorless bodies. 58G is my favorite lens. And it performs brilliantly on the Z9. (faster focus, higher focus accuracy)

Fons tell us plus and minus of your change from z6 to Z7 II
I got a good deal on a Z7, was even thinking getting the Z9.
My Z6 was due for replacement showing signs of use.
Similar cameras from the outside, a few differences though as we know,
differnet sensor, dual card slots, menu is been updated.
I noticed better results with some F mount lenses i tried.
I am still looking for to customize the focal point reset?!
I think the z6 is faster than a z7 when it comes to focusing
action.
Overall i suspect the z6 to be better focusing anyway.
For now time will tell.
Thank you!
