Title: AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8: Impact injury - Faulty AF - Encoder pickup
Post by: Erik Lund on October 03, 2022, 20:42:52
The old warhorse AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8 suffered an Impact injury about 8 yeas ago.

Since then it has been an ongoing project to repair it,,,  :o :o :o Today sucess  ;D

The cause was me kneeling down in just the wrong angle to empty the lens out of my Billingham West  >:(

First obvious thing was the Lens hood bayonet had cracked. So the spare came in hand  ;)

The focus ring had a small deep mar indicating point of impact as well this was to be repaired internally by dremel the bump away.

Still there was issues focusing and here I found the below two videos now and they give the answers to the rest of issues.

and the internal flex board getting loose as well as details on wires etc.

Erik, well done.  Nice to see a worthy lens back in action.

The old warhorse has revealed black plastic underneath the worn white areas.  Somehow I always imagined that white plastic parts were involved in these lenses.

Thx ;)

Yes it's a light grey color, just a thin coat on the worn piece the other parts have more of a light crinkle finish - Zoom and Focus rings are metal as well as the front and almost all of the internals as well.

I have always been very fond of the focal length spread 28mm to 70mm especially for PJ style work things tend to not look strange, as zoon as one comes close to 24mm on other lenses you have to take extra care for that 'distortion' of people and things in the corners.

I'm told the SWM needs to run dry since it runs partly on friction.

Some have claimed that the motor squeak can be eliminated by cleaning of the motor sliding ring parts.  Is there any validity to this idea?

The squeak on my 17-35mm f/2.8D AF-S Nikkor tends to disappear after usage.  Out of the camera bag after a period of not being used the squeak has returned.  A PITA.
