A different take on close-ups. Here a colony mainly of the Greater Duckweed Spirodela polyrhiza captured with Laowa 24mm f/14 "endoscope" lens on Z6. at approx. 2X (in front). 40 frames stacked in Zerene. Gusts of wind buffeting the water surface necessitated a pre-mature end to the stacking thus the background had to glide into unsharpness.

The grub of the leaf mining moth Phyllocnitis labyrinthella makes a long track across an aspen leaf. The track never crosses itself and eventually will end at the leaf border, where the little grub enters pupation. The very edge is bent over at the pupation site and "glued" in position by silky threads.

The dark central string in the mining track is a frass line the appearance of which is diagnostic for this species. 'Frass' being the very scientific term for 'insect poop', by the way.

Despite the turbulence in the country, farmer protests over planned landgrab, the elderly, virtually robbed of their pensions, show complacency.

Nicely illustrated Fons, though I missed seeing discontent on my recent visit.

Guess the big pensions change is a forced moved from defined benefit?
The last time I had a chance to be in one of those was 2002. At present, I don't think many UK employers force a move, but many make DB unattractive for employees to continue in. Virtually no employer has offered these to people joining a company for many, many years.
Title: Re: July 2022

Pensions are people's savings through many years of labour, a lot of money amassed to be envious of for the already rich and greedy, getting even greedier. So they create inflation, and we are on the brink of hyperinflation, which is just another word for theft.
But lets not get in to that for much more to say about this situation. Thank you.

Searching for alternate lenses for doing IR with my modified Z5 & Z6 cameras, I retrieved the old Zoom-Nikkor 35-70mm f/3.5 lenses from their retreat. The oldest model has 72mm filter, low contrast, only focus to 1m, and is very sharp. The newer model has 62mm filter, slightly higher contrast but a tad less sharp than its predecessor, and focusses to 0.6m and has a "macro" feature as well. These old zooms are also distinguished by low amounts of geometric distortion and good control of chromatic aberrations.

Both delivered crisp IR images without any trace of hot spots, thus I need to avail myself of these for upcoming forays into the "wild". I ended up opting for the 35-70 #62mm thread as this model was easier to fit with a lens shade (using the HK-15). The 850 filters from UVIR Optics have shallow front threads and one cannot add shades directly to them.

A test shot to verify the lens indeed has no hot spot. I have tested the lenses from wide open to f/22 and there is nothing to be seen anywhere.

Good luck on your mission Birna.

As well as the photographic qualities, that is a brain scrambling image.

I gradually worked out there was a window frame running across, then more slowly, that the "ground" at the top (above the dark IR sky) was the reflection in the open skylight....

Title: Re: July 2022
Post by: Birna Rørslett on July 07, 2022, 19:14:28
It's obviously one of the huge Eurasian species. The red blotches of the Giant Hogweed are mainly seen at the lower parts of the stem and peduncles.

Any if these species are vile, potentially phototoxic, and allergenic plants so care should be taken in handling them.

I trust Fons correctly identified his subject.

Title: Re: July 2022
Post by: Birna Rørslett on July 07, 2022, 20:12:53
We have a very nasty representative of the Hogweeds up in Arctic Norway, where it grows to enormous size. I have seen them 4m tall and they according to local lore can extend even further. It goes by the name of "Tromsø Palm" and was brought as an ornamental garden plant by seafarers a long time ago (from the Orient, apparently; its scientific name is believed to be Heracleum persicum). It quickly found gardens to be too confined habitat and dispersed rapidly elsewhere in the coastal lowlands up North, causing trouble by its phototoxicity and ability to cause slow-healing skin lesions.

Down south, we have the Giant Hogweed invasion which is of more recent origin than the Tromsø Palm, but at least the plant is equally noxious and troublesome.

We in addition have two native species of Hogweed that rarely stand more than 1m tall and fortunately lack the phytotoxicity of their outlandish relatives.

Got my early-bird offer on the new AF Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 native Z(DX)-mount lens today. I must say the lens surpasses all my expectations, this is really really good, for the rather low price (kickstarter price just a tad above $200, with free shipping included), it must be unbeatable.

On my return from today's visit to my GP, I shot this snap of the Communist Resistance WW2 monument situated down town Oslo. Not only is the lens razor sharp with great colours, it has very low geometric distortion as well, just a vestige of moustache distortion at the very edges. Chromatic nasties seem pretty much gone too, at least when the lens is stopped a bit down.  If my time schedule permits, I'll do a more in-depth test but at present Birna is happy with her new toy for the Z fc.

Actually it does look good, prices have gone up for the viltrox 13 to around 400 and some offerings are over 500 in euros.
I wonder how it compares to the nikkor z 20mm f/1.8s on ff. Looking forward to you further findings, thanks.

Try again.
I tried updating my post #194 with an image, that didn't work.  Also images are gone (or not visible to me) in post 187, 188 and 191.

I tried a new post with an image, and got the same message as mentioned before.  (I tried different browsers)

Recently,  Ruth and I travelled down south on the Norwegian coastline to visit friends and for me, also to have the opportunity to search for fungi of the enigmatic phylum Entorrhizomycota, a tiny tiny biotic phylum comprising three genera and around 20 species (thus far). They have a history going back millions of years and specialise on parasitizing rushes and sedges, on the roots of which they form galls and swellings. The spores are passively dispersed when the affected roots die off later (by natural courses). The subterranean existence and the fact that the host plant seems to be unbothered by the presence of the fungus has lead to most occurrences of the Enterorrhiza go undetected. You actually have to dig up the plant and wash out the roots to find the galls, which often are tiny just a few mm in length. Precisely the kind of challenge that appeals to my nerdier side :)

Here I am washing the roots of the rush Juncus articulatus (not to be confused by the big clumps of J. effusus in the foreground) and indeed found galls of  Enterorrhiza casparyana on its roots. On such occasions standing in dirt and foul, smelling water is of minor concern.

Hm. Power lines and an artificial weir in the river tell about man's influence, even in this beautiful landscape.

Today was such a nice meetup with our old friend Anthony and his lovely wife. We met for lunch at Ottolenghi's to enjoy some of the best food offerd in the City.

Later Beate and me went on a long walk to enjoy the stark contrasts between the cattle and their keepers. To me it felt like a dark dytopic scene from a SciFi movie.

This scene is at the Marstalls in Mayfair. My interest was of the architectural kind, seeing the air conditioning planned to be built into this monument protected building. Gosh.

A young security person rushed by to control my behavior telling us the ensemble of building belongs to a private club annabelles.co.uk ... Another Gosh.

Indeed Birna it troubles me as well to see so many powerlines everywhere and it spoils our photos. Or I should have moved to a better spot.

There is a saying amongst nature photographers when they set up for a shot of a scenic river or lake: where are the power lines? Sometimes one only discovers them later when the image is processed :)

It is one of my dilemmas - do you edit the lines out and disguise the truth or do you leave them in?  Sometimes a change in position can get them out of the picture - but sometimes this is easier said than done, particularly if personal risk is involved.

Editing out any object the photographer finds disturbing eventually leads down a slippery slope. However, for non-documentary work you can do whatever you want, as long as you don't pretend the outcome to be showing "the truth".

For anyone nerdy enough to wonder about my root gall fungi, here are a pictorial summary of Entorrhiza casparyana on roots of Juncus articulatus.

Lower panel: two galls showing the younger and brighter tips and the older, darker region where mature spores accumulate.

Upper panel: two spores at 1000X. They have very thick walls, up to 5 µm, and the ornamentation of the outer wall is very peculiar with lots of wart-like protrusions. The spores are 22-26 µm wide, almost globose, embedded in a matrix of decaying cells and fungal hyphae, and are dispersed into the wild later with the roots die off. So the dispersal of that fungus is a slow process and needs some assistance of water to be effective at all. This tiny phylum has been around for million of years apparently, so outdo us humans by orders of magnitude -- food for thought?

Since May I am in a process of selling (and cleaning) my house to buy another one with my girlfriend.  For me it's an intense period, removing things you stocked up for 35 years and so on.

The need for to relax in  nature is needed ;)
