Title: What Is Your Favorite Nikkor Lens To Adapt?
Post by: BruceSD on May 18, 2022, 17:06:02
.
I own no zoom or autofocus lenses.

I have a Z6 that I use older, manual focus, Nikkor lenses on.  Also, I love to use various Nikkor lenses on my Panasonic micro-four-thirds bodies.

My favorite Nikkor lenses to adapt are:   Nikkor-O 55mm f1.2 CRT,   Nikkor 50mm f2 non-AI ,  and the Nikkor 105 DC (see photo).  My favorite adapter is the .64x Metabones Speedbooster NF to BMCC adapter.

What is your favorite Nikkor lens to adapt?   What adapter and camera body do you put it on?

The .64x Metabones Speedbooster NF to BMCC adapter, an improvement over the native adapter?

The .64x Metabones Speedbooster NF to BMCC adapter, an improvement over the native adapter?

The older/original/"Ultra" speedboosters, and some of the newer ones (e.g. all of the ones for Fuji X bodies) are the .71x magnification.   The newer/improved/"XL" version/design speedboosters are the .64x versions.

From a physics standpoint, the .64x version has a wider field of view, and better brightness than the .71x version.  Also,  you can achieve an incredible f/0.8 by pairing a 0.64x Speed Booster XL with an f/1.2 lens.

A couple years ago Brian Caldwell (the guy who designed the speedbooster optics) said on Nov 18th 2020 on DP Review forum-   "Bear in mind, the .64x Speed Booster XL is a considerable improvement over the original .71x Speed Booster for M43."

I have owned both versions.   Since reading Brian's comment, I now only own 4 of the .64x version and none of the .71 version.

Also, I have owned the NF - MFT metabones speed booster.  I can not recall if it's .71x or .64x; but I did think the image quality of the NF to BMCC version was better.  The rear of the NF/BMCC is much closer to the sensor, maybe that's why (so close you can only use it in the silent/electronic shutter mode).

A lot of old glass shines adapted on Z cameras. I most like Summilux-R 50 and 80, Summicron-R 35 v2, 50 v2, 90. Also Konica Hexanon AR 57/1.2 is really great on Z6!
Canon FD 85/1.2L is great too, and many old Nikkors: 16/3.5, 35/1.4, 105/1.8,28/2,400/5.6... And many others.
Z cameras are (IMHO) wonderfull way to have a lot of fun with that good old gear!

I can only second that. All and every manual nikkor I own have been improved by the  z bodies.

The original FTZ adapter has an annoying foot. I much prefer the Rayqual adapter.

I like the AI and earlier lenses for their longer focusing throw.

My first choice is a 35mm and the f/2 version is an agreeable companion. My only complaint is that the bokeh can be a little busy.

The 105mm f/2.5 needs no introduction.

The Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 with the PK-13 ring works nicely for my negatives.

The Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/4 with the PN-11 ring is doing very well for my foray into close-up photography and stacking focus.

Like others some of the classic nikkor work great on bodies like the Df, and Z cameras. The Df was made to work with them it seems. The Z cameras are missing an aperture follower, so you can’t get info in what aperture as used for a specific shot, but the case was the same when shooting roll film. But in-body stabilization, a zoom able viewfinder, and a short flange distance makes using and adapting lenses easy.

I find the 105 f/2.5 PC auto to be one of my most used, though the 105 micro nikkor is also good at that focal length. I can’t choose one as a favorite, because they all shine at different uses.

105/2.5, Summicron-R 50/2 (II) despite inefficient coatings.
