Title: Unusual mushroom
Post by: Airy on August 31, 2021, 18:08:07
My first encounter with that species, in a public garden in Lille (FR).
Df, Noct-Nikkor 58/1.2 @f/4, shot handheld at minimum focussing distance, cropped (I had no other lens in my bag). Actual size 3-4cm, maybe.

Airy:

That is quite an unique looking fungi.  I wonder if it is beginning to decompose at this point, or if that is its peak structure/color.

Thanks for sharing.

Could be the remains of a Morel species or False Morel species. Just guessing.

It is basket stinkhorn - clathrus ruber - toxic, causes stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, etc.
