Title: Loon Ballet. Act II- The penguin dance
Post by: Randy Stout on July 27, 2021, 02:26:32
This common loon was captured several years ago.  There were a number of visiting loons on the lake, and is often the case, some tempers flared and the resident loons were showing how aggravated they were.  This behaviour was not directed at me, but the invading loons.
When the loon propels itself up into the air like this, it is called the Penguin dance, as from the front the full display of the wide underside does remind one of a penguin.

D6. 600f/4.  Taken from my little loon boat, the "Loonie Two"

Randy, your detailed knowledge of how this species behaves certainly shows in your photographs.

Thanks everyone.

I do love the loons.  I have spent a lot of time over the years floating around with them,  and still look forward to every outing!

Another beautiful image! Thank you for sharing and for a little insight as to how you get closer to them.
