Title: [Theme] Pictures taken with vintage lenses
Post by: Zang on June 25, 2021, 15:54:16
Hi all,

Opening this thread hopping everyone to share your pictures taken with vintage lenses, Nikon or not Nikon :) Please kindly specify the lens and the aperture setting if you know.

Not right now, but I will show my pictures for sure. Even though, almost all my lenses are vintage, I am still looking to see which ones represent the vintage look the best :)

Cheers,
Zang

Contax Zeiss 50mm f1.4 - Nikon Z5, F5.6, ISO 400, 1/2.5s

Usually, the lens is very sharp but this shot was shaken a bit.

I have just repeated the shot with more careful pressing (still did not want to look for Z5 timer in the menu).

The old AI 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor was simply made for the Nikon Df camera.

There was plenty DOF in the photo, thus my guess.

After finding that Contax Zeiss 100mm f2.8 outperforms Nikon 105mm f2.5 at every aspect, whenever I need 100mm, I grab that one.

Inspired by Birna today, I gave Nikkor another chance taking it for my hiking. Here is a few pictures taken with that very lens.

Yes, but which 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor? There was a Sonnar type (5 lenses, 3 groups) and a  Xenotar-type lens (5 lenses, 4 groups) and variations with in those groups.

I'm not a historian and not that knowledgeable regarding optics but I chanced on the Nikkor - The Thousand and One Nights series...

Took the 135/2.8Q (about 1968) out for a spin the other day just keeping it limber.  F11 according to exif. No recollection why I set it so small.

Another old favorite I have no recent good shots from (last year I had a nasty computer crash - didn't lose originals, but lots of stuff I'd processed, and I'm too lazy to redo a lot of it -  but I took this lens to Antarctica back in 2014.  This shot was done on a D3200, and if I dug up the original I could probably make a better JPG than this, but it will have to do for now.  This ancient lens I got for nearly nothing but never liked it much on film.  Reading some of Birna's old accounts, I decided to give it another go on DX, where it found its feet.

The lens is a 2.8cm/3.5H dating to about 1961.  Unknown aperture, as the D3200 counts all manual lenses as 0 focal length and 0 aperture.

I used a Canon 35mm f/2.8 Tilt-Shift lens extensively in the film era. The lens was expertly converted to F-mount by a former friend. Not tried for a while now, through, as it is impossible to CPU-modify. Perhaps I should as it certainly has that "rounded, vintage" look. Its colour rendition was on the cold side compared to my Nikkors, I recall. This would be a breeze to correct in the digital era.

Nikon F5, Canon 35mm f/2.8 TS probably around f/11.

I am sorry to hear about the disk failure. I was less lucky and I lost everything from two years, 2012 and 2013 including pictures from my first trip to the US. There were beautiful shots from Watkins Glen waterfalls.

And of course, your landscape taken with 2.8cmm is a beautiful vintage looking one. The sun star makes the composition very expressive.

Glad you like these images, Zang.  I like the mild rendition (both in terms of sharpness and color) of not-too-fast lenses with fewer single-coated elements from the 50s and the 60s.  As you say, they tend to give some peaceful atmosphere.

Another old favorite from around 1961, this 200/4Q was gotten in miserable hacked-up condition for $5 some time ago.  Cleaned up a little, I find it works surprisingly nicely with extensions.  With the full 68 mm. set on it's nice for bugs as long as they stand still long enough. (note, as usual, I forgot to reset Exif on the camera).  In addition the sloppy AI conversion does not engage the prong on the extension tube, so it shot wide open even though stopped down to around F8,  and ended up a bit noisier than it should.  One of these days I'll have to try to add a prong, similar to that on the 28/3.5, to make it meter better.

The Nikkor-Q 25cm f/4 in S-mount for Nikon rangefinders must really qualify. My sample is approx. 70 years old by now and still going strong. The N-F tube made a short period by Nikon around 1960 allows it to mount on F cameras. I even have implanted a CPU.

First, the appearance of the lens which may not be known to many people these days. Production was quite limited.

Next, a UV capture of Marsh Marigolds Caltha palustris with the Baader U filter and the 25cm f/4 + Nikon D3200.

Killer sharp on a tripod, but hard to hand hold, is the original 400/5.6 AI.  Not many of these appear to have been made, and mine according to Roland Vink's site looks like one of the last, only 70 shy of the last serial number he shows, so it would be around 1983.  You can chase dragonflies with an extension tube,  but even extended the focus distance is not close, and the throw is long and stiff.  Still, why not....

Try lifting the front lens barrel with one finger to take weight off the helical. That may help a little.

Alas, mine is just kind of stiff.  It was a "bargain" grade lens when I got it long ago.  Nice sharp glass, but not a prime lens for action.  It seems a little stiffer in the middle of its range, and I would not be surprised if it's had a few hard knocks.  When I got it, it had "LA Times" engraved on it. It was also missing the meter prong, and the little set screw that prevents over-rotation (fortunately I used it on an F with a removable back, so no damage).  It was apart for fungus removal a couple of years ago, but came back about the same.

BTW, I passed a few good deals on Contax Zeiss 135 f1.8 after reading some "average" ratings from the Internet. At the end, there was a deal that was too good to pass. After taking a few shot, I can tell that the lens is rather stellar!

Thanks Luc!

With no scientific testing, the IQ seems to be superior to Nikon 105mm f2.5 AIS sample that I have. The only other one I would compare to is another Contax Zeiss, the 100mm f2.8 Makro-Planar. Again, I used the word sample here as I believe people are not wrong when telling about their 105s.

Some images of the gear. I apologize for the phone pics but it should give you a good idea:

 1. photo sniper. The box is used but going strong
 2. Everything in neatly arranged and makes me feel like James Bond
 3. Mounted and ready. Here you can see the filter set (there are 5 but some are stubborn and will need some patience to unscrew), the 58mm f2 also part of the set and the Pisco m42-to-z adapter
  4.  Mounted on the Z6. It does not allow as is to add the gun-like grip
  5.  Detail of the charging trigger
  6.  Detail of the engraving and focusing wheel. The lens shade is screw-on rubber with metal end ring. I like it.

Once the m42-to-z adapter is added, the both 58 and 300mm lens can focus a little beyond infinity and of course, to closest distance. Then, the adapters helicoids acts as a built-in extension ring. Very useful.

With the 300mm 4.5. All images @f5.6

The lens is difficult and awkward to focus but it can give very detail images. I haven´t change the support becuse the place were the pistol is attached gives a quasi arca-swiss and that suffice for some support now. Will see.
It is heavy and feels very robust.
The aid of the evf makes everything way easier and gives confidence over what you are going to get.
Today was excepcionally overcast. Low contrast is in big part due to the light quality and not the lens

   1. Minimum focus distance. Handhold.
  2. Static enough birds
  3. 100% crop
   4. @5.6 is sharp all the way to the corners
   5. bokeh at  close distance
 6. Portrait pano, 4 images. Meet JM, has been a fisherman for most of his life and was a gracious host today.

Not my oldest lens, but "newest" in terms of acquisition. The Nikkor-N 5cm f/1.1 dating from 1959 should definitively belong to the class of vintage lenses :)

Here I used it for shooting infrared with my modified PrimaLuce Z5. The lens was set to f/1.1 as I see no reason not to use its "speed" when it has it. Besides, the 5cm lens will start to hot-spot in IR from f/5.6.

Apologies if the picture already has been posted on NG.

Tne rangefinder speed monster Nikkor-N 5cm f/1.1 was launched in its time to complement the capabilites of the Nikon SP and S3 presumably. The first version used the same internal mount and through-the-camera focussing as all the other 5cm lenses, however it was so heavy that this operation became less than smooth and in fact might damage the camera. Thus Nikon made a second version with external mount instead, whic is the one I now own.

The lens is quite elusive as the production numbers were small at the time and asking price nowadays is pretty steep.

Here it is: Nikkor-N 5cm f/1.1 on my PrimaLuce Z5. (the lens shade is not original). Its size and heft is comparable to the Noct 58mm f/1.2 which lurks in the background. Because the 5cm has external mount it is easily attached to the Z cameras through a standard RF(S)-Z adapter.

Although it's not a vintage lens per se, the Voigtlander 40/1.4 Nokton Classic SC is very vintage in character.  It's Leica M mount used on a Fuji X-Pro2 with a TTArtisan adapter.  It's really made for B&W but it has a pretty decent color look as well.

Real old-school 007 set  8) Very nice images shot with it!

Here are some pictures of my Telyt-R 1:6.8/560 and pictures taken with it. The lens head is attached on a NOVOFLEX Follow Focus Grip PIGRIFF-D. This grip is the latest incarnation produced 1992-1999. The adapter for Nikon F-mount camera to the NOVOFLEX universal bayonet was amended with a chip from Birna by Erik Lund. The second picture shows the lens with the built-in lens hood extended.

The example photos are of a Eurasian Bullfinch.

Shot with the single-coated Nikkor-H Auto 50mm/f2.0 on SIGMA fp.  The first two images was shot wide open.  The last one was shot at f2.8.

I think that the remaining spherical aberration diffuses all the lights nicely to enhance the atmosphere of the cityscape in the night.

Nice shots Akira. I like the magical atmosphere and the (relatively) low rise cityscapes!

Glad you like them, Zang!  A modern, more aberration-free lens would have rendered the scene more dry and futile.

I got Contax Zeiss 40-80mm f3.5 lens today for only 50 CAD (40 USD equivalent) with pristine glass and in very good cosmetic condition. Despite complains about sharpness from people on the Internet, the lens is very sharp on my cropped NEX6. The colors are really nice too!

Got myself a Novoflex Nikon Z adapter to have some fun with my old manual Minolta lenses.

A few shots from todays snow weather
- first one with a Minolta MC ROKKOR-PF 50mm 1.7 - 1973/77
- rest next 4 with 28/2.8 - 1983.
- added two more shots with the 50mm .. last two.

The IBIS in the Z7 is great - I was able to shoot handheld 1/10s at 28mm .. not super sharp but quite acceptable.

Bussed-in tourists at Badwater, Death Valley.  Photo from January 04, 2015...lens 135/3.5 Ai, ( September 1981, according to Roland's site*.)  *My copy actually has the last serial number listed on the Photosynthesis site for this lens model.

Outstanding picture !  :)

I have purchased a mint Vivitar 55mm f2.8 for around $30. The lens has a bigger piece of dust inside the rear assembly. It was pretty easy to disassemble and clean. As the rest of the lens looks and works like new, I did not go further with disassembling the helicoids. The lens is very sharp.
