Title: Nikkor 85mm f1.4 Ais Can it be chipped?
Post by: PhotoBuzz on June 03, 2021, 16:22:41
Hi everyone, I am new year and got to this great forum looking for info on Nikkor dandelion chipping as I am using manual Nikkors for filming on a Z6.
Now, I am all aware of the difficulties involved in chipping some specific Nikkors 58 Noct and 85 1.4 for instance but I read someone in Denmark did that on the 58 Noct at least.
Any pointers to who can offer (as in paying for it obviously ;) ) this service for the 85 1.4 Ais?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Our Danish elite member Erik aka 'Dr. Lens' have done a lot of Nikkors for me.

My supply of  bespoke CPU chips has dried up for some time and alas I foresee no more production of these. However, there is always the Dandelion chip.

Virtually all Nikkors can be CPU-modified, see below. However, some are tricky and a few require the genius of Dr. Lens.

Thanks Birna. No more CPU chips around?!  :-\ Bad news I guess, as Dandelions are glued in place vs CPU chips installed with screws also, isn't it? And that worries me, even though I have to say the Nikkors I've chipped are holding on nicely.
Thanks.

Oh, and by the way, should anyone have modified their Nikkor 85mm 1.4 Ais, would be great to have details of how that was achieved please (photos would be fantastic).

I won't disasemble my 85/.4 AIS now .... however, from what I can recall, you need to remove  significant chunk of metal inside, from the wall of the rear focusing cell. The fact that this lens has CRC implemented by rear focusing complicates the chipping so call on the Dremel :)

The 85/1.4 in this regard is quite similar to the 16/3.5 Fisheye, both need a lot of Dremel action.

Just had a quick peek at my 85/1.4 and from what i can observe, material has been removed along an arc of about 150 degrees, starting at the midde position between the top  bayonet screws, and ending beyond the mounting slit. The chipping likely was conducted by yours truly as it lacks the flawless nature of Erik's doings.

You are too kind  ;D

The above image rendering is like it's straight out of Nikon brochure  8) Very nicely done,  after a very fruitful visit to Copenhagen, Photografica and some hours of chipping I recall. Very nice Df set

The rear CRC is also the challenge when chipping the 35mm f/1.4
