Captured during the initial testing with the 200-500 zoom on my D800
1/500 handheld with VR iso 800 f5.6 @500mm
AF is a touch slow but once initial focus is obtained it tracks well
Some bright spots in the top right side were cloned

Beautiful photo, Armando. Quite a remarkable capture for 1/500th @ 500 mm. I like the complementary palette of colours and the dark tones. I might be tempted to crop a bit closer, which would make the background seem to dissolve even more, but purely a matter of taste. I rented a 200-500 mm some time ago to photograph herons (among other things), and found it a good and versatile lens. Despite the high quality/price ratio, however, I haven't been tempted to buy one. Cheers, John

You captured the beautiful moment of the heron. Congrats on purchasing the new weapon!

Beautiful!
The 200-500 is the only super telephoto lens I own and it has proven to be one of the best purchases that I have ever made for my camera gear.

beryllium, Akira, Bill, thanks for the comments
The zoom is massive in comparison to any other lens I own, although seems surprisingly easy to use, once I get past the weight, one is certainly not inconspicuous when walking around with it

Beautiful, well done for such a sharp image of the bird in flight.

Well-done and fine results! Happy newyear Armando.

Thanks for the comments
Paco, funny the image comes out as calm, to take it is is a blur of things that happen in a short period of time, the bird is flying away from me and flapping its wings at low altitude, it passed through trees and reached an area free of obstacles, I have to struggle to find it through the narrow angle of view of the 500mm , acquire focus, and shoot a number of frames hoping for a good one, but yes this tiny slice of time looks calm :) ¡Feliz año!

Ah, good point. Nothing of that is part of the image, as a viewer (implied if you know the technical difficulties, but still) And there is infinite beauty when anything moves with its nature, gracile and powerful, seaming effortless in a slice of time. Thanks for sharing Armando
Y feliz año nuevo!

That's a lovely image Armando.
I've been pondering the (theoretical) PF f5.6 500mm against the (more realistic) 200-500mm.
But I keep seeing so many good 200-500mm images like this.
