With all the commotion of the announcement around the Nikon Zee platform I kind of forgot that DJI also scheduled the announcement of the Mavic 2 drones today.
In case you missed it like I did, here's the info:
https://www.dji.com/mavic-2?site=brandsite&from=homepage
And the review from my favourite Youtube tech reviewer iPhonedo of the Pro version with the Hasselblad camera and the 1" sensor:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1Hks_NieMk&t=0s
I have been waiting for a long time for an update of the Mavic Pro as I wanted all the capabilities of the bigger drones in a small foldable travel friendly package and now finally the second iteration has the 1" sensor, adjustable aperture and collision avoidance sensors on all sides which were missing on the original model.
Plan to order one soon, anybody else interested?
-
Thanks for the heads up! ;)
Always wanted one, just difficult to get an overview of the offerings :o
-
You probably remember the amazing aerial Lofoten shots from BjørnJ, he took those with a Sony RX100 fixed to a big DJI Phantom drone if my memory is correct. The Mavic 2 Pro has the latest version of the RX100 sensor and the Mavic 2 drone is less than half the size of te Phantom and folds up to fit in a backpack or camera bag :)
But DJI didn't make it easy by announcing two flavours of the Mavic 2, the other one is the Zoom which has a smaller sensor with a 24-48mm equivalent optical zoom range which provides more creativity for filming like the dolly zoom effect.
-
The DJI Mavic Pro is a fantastic machine - my son flies one - but the image quality was a little bit on the weak side. The 2 (not the zoom one) is good news, allowing to level up from the current smartphone picture quality.
Have you noticed the Hasselblad tag ? Hasselblad was recently acquired by DJI. Let’s just hop that Hasselblad doesn’t fall back in their hately habit of rebadging.

Very nice review, creative and fun 8)
So nice this drone, funny with the Hasselblad camera,,, seems so wrong to see such a small item with Hasselblad logo :o
-

Thanks, JA. Since then I have purchased a Phantom 4 Advanced + . It has a camera with the 1" Sony sensor, and incredible stability - it is possible to take photos with several seconds shutter speed. These photos are from this summer, the panorama of the golf course is 5 or 6 photos stitched. I simply rotated the bird between the shots. The tif is 130 MB.
The Mavic 2 Pro is highly interesting, the camera is certainly at least as good as the one in P4A or Pro. Same sensor, but maybe a bit better electronics. And the Mavic has of course the big advantage of easier transportation. The Phantom needs its own bacpack.
I haven't tried the Mavic, but some say the Phantom is a little more stable in wind because it's heavier. I also like the built-in screen in the Phantom plus-models, it's twice as bright as a phone or a tablet. Great in sunshine.

Thanks for the update Bjørn, and impressive images as always :)

Though I would like to venture into video soon and the Mavic 2 Zoom seems to be the ticket for making cool videos for social media purposes the photographer in me wants to go for the Mavic 2 Pro with the 1" sensor and "Hasselblad" camera so thats the one I've just pre-ordered.
Hopefully the drone will be here in a few weeks so you can get some hands-on experience when you guys come over for the Photokina visit :)
-
That would be amazing ;) wow!
Bjørn J thanks for the update ;) Yes gret images as always !

The "dolly-zoom effect" with M2 Zoom is impressive if used with care. I read somewhere that the Mavic 2 can not record video in 4k at 60fps, as the Phantom 4P and 4A can.
The Mavic 2 Zoom has a smaller sensor, but it has a super-resolution mode, where it takes 9 shots at 48mm and stacks them into one 48MP photo with a field of view as a 24mm. Interesting feature, I wonder how it works in real life. Could be great for landscapes.

That was exactly the reason to wait for the Mavic 2 and luckily DJI did not disappoint :)
I don't believe the Hasselblad marketing all that much but do think they were involved in the design of the camera and optics as there must be some kind of logic behind the Hasselblad purchase by DJI.

True, but feels more like a nice consumer feature whereas one could probably get better results by doing the stitching in post processing with RAW files like you have been doing?

Sure, and the resulting 48MP file from the 9-photo stich will of course be jpg only. Shooting panos manually with the Phantom and Mavic is so easy beacuase of the stability. I shoot RAW (dng), process them in LR or Camera Raw, export them as 16-bit TIF, and stitch them with PTGui.
I will order a Mavic 2 Pro next year when most of the bugs have been ruled out :)
-
DJI shipped my Mavic 2 Pro today from China so it should be here in a week or so.
Lets hope I keep it in one piece for at least a month so the crew will be able to test it when they come over for the Photokina visit ;D
-
Congratulations JA. Looking forward to see some photos!
I will order mine early next year.
Did you get the "fly more" combo?
-
Thank you for this thread Jan Anne ....I thought a drone that could deliver reasonable/acceptable still image quality, would be overly complicated/expensive. The Mavic 2 seems to be relatively easy to purchase and operate. Looking forward to hearing your experience with yours when it arrives. It is also good to hear from the experienced Bjørn J, recommending it also.
If it all works out for you, I expect to not be able to resist purchasing one for myself. It seems strange the new Z camera's are not capturing my interest, but this certainly is!
Cheers
-
Didn't order the separate Fly More Kit yet with the additional batteries, propellors, car charger, etc but will later.
Back then the original Mavic Pro could only be ordered as a standalone item or bundled with the Fly More Kit and the latter option became available weeks or even months later. As the Fly More Kit is now available as a separate item the plan was to order them separately to prevent any delays with the drone itself.
Probably a little paranoia from my side but so far it seems to work as planned ;D
-

I hear yah Bez, we both have been shooting mirrorless for a while now and the Z cameras don't offer any new capabilities over what we currently have to justify the rather big investment to jump ship whereas the Mavic 2 Pro will provide a new capability and totally new photography experience for a smaller fee (for those whom still have a full set of Nikon glass it might be a different proposition though).
It's inevitable that I'll go all Nikon again as this is the brand where my heart is but it will probably take some time to materialise...
A few more remarks that I'm watching a Trinitron TV when I'm trying to photograph you with My First Sony might help to speed things up though ;) ;)
-
If I had to suffer the embarrassment of using a Sony, then a Z would already be on order!!! :-)
I am kind of happy with what I have fujifilm/Nikon. But if the very nice looking S lenses are a big step up in performance, as suggested. No doubt I will then be interested in a camera to use them with.
Cheers
-
Thanks for the encouragement Bez, really appreciate the push in the right direction ;D ;D
-
Such a pity that the M2 drones don’t have a mechanical shutter option though! Good luck with unbending those poles along the way....😉😊
And as far as I know, it’s the same Sony sensor on my P4 PRO + as the M2 with the Hasselblad cam. How much Hasselblad it really is, is another discussion. I’m betting Hasselblad just did some tiny "adjustments" on the P4 pro cam and wrote Hasselblad, DJI will without doubt make money of the Hasselblad name.

Last Tuesday the drone was delivered and today I managed to find so time for the maiden flight after dealing with things like reading the manual, firmware update, etc.
First impressions are very positive, especially the low noise the drone emits, you could barely hear it 30 meters or so away. Its rather windy overhere at the moment but the little drone was very stable in the high winds.
One of the buzzards came in to inspect but didn't have the memory card installed so it wouldn't take an image (thought it had onboard memory?), something I need to take off for the next flight I guess.
-
Congratulations is in order! Wow sounds amazing, looking so much forward to seeing it live ;) I thought it had onboard memory as well,,, two card slots I guess :o :o :o
-
Found me a micro SD card and fooled around with the camera a bit, the setting sun was perfect for testing the flare resistance of the "Hasselblad" camera.
There's some flare but the kind I like to add some juice to an image, so a pass for now :)
Composition wise I should have turned a little more to the right but was more focussed on timing the three trucs passing by which I somehow also screwed up ::)
-
With the sun out the frame everything seems nice and sharp.
The default focus area seems to be in the middle of the frame but can be changed by tapping another area on the phones screen. It does reset itself to the centre again which is kind of annoying, probably a setting I need to change somewhere.
Attached an image of my humble little "farm" surrounded by grasslands, fruit trees and actual farms as far as the eye can see.
And yes thats me in standing there in the driveway ;D
-
JA, your homestead is easily recognisable from air :D
The new car is white?
-
The new car is white?
Yup, and with half an engine compared to the 6 cilinder 130i Bimmer I traded in but thats the way forward apparently to keep fuel costs in check ::)
-
it is still capable to propel you over to Rhenen for an evening dinner with me and my daughter next week -- Or managing all the way to Photokina/Cologne?
We have to make an NG Crew shot with the drone, if you can make it come close and at the same time avoid attacking us :D
-
There is a nice precence in the images, a nice uncomplicated rendering ;)
-
During day time the image quality doesn't seem to be all that different between the Zoom and the Pro models but in low light the Pro pulls ahead very quickly due to the benefits of the 4 times bigger sensor.
Here's a rather good low light review:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDxGGEUFVIg
-
dpreview state that it has 8gb internal memory??
The images look promising .....I am looking forward to you sharing more of your experiences, and results.
Cheers
-
For tinkerers amongst us, yes you can switch the Zoom and Pro cameras between the models:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOffXi_UUow
Seem a little strange that they did not offer this as a feature combined with more camera options like a fisheye, tele, night vision, etc.
-
dpreview state that it has 8gb internal memory??
Yes it does but fills up very quickly when shooting with the default 4K video which where in the internal memory indeed but the pics somehow ended up on my phone before using an SD card. Changed the video resolution to 1080 for now so I can fool around a little with the photo and video settings a little easier without too many storage restraints.
Its just me being a complete noob btw and not having the patience to read that far into the manual ::) ::)
Flying is so much fun btw and being able to fly over and around my property makes getting to know the drone a lot easier and is a perfect excuse to spent more time outside. This morning I enjoyed blending flying into my outside morning coffee ritual which turned out to be a perfect combo :)
-

I am a little concerned that you looked at the manual at all. But relieved you only gave it a cursory glance before flying it :-)
Nice gaff Jan Anne ....impressive!
Cheers

Had my first crash yesterday, the metal fence that separates the meadow from the rest of the property was a little overprotective and apparently didn't approve my low to the ground training exercises. Was practicing circling around a stationary object but came out of the orbit a little to fast and in the wrong direction ::)
Though it was a pretty hard crash the drone came out unscathed, just had to unfold one of the legs again and do a reboot to recalibrate the crooked camera. So the Mavic 2 seems to be a tough little drone which is good to know for a first time flier who thinks he can skip training in the slow tripod mode ;)
Talking about crashes, within 48 hours of activating the drone you can signup for the DJI Care Refresh service which entitles you to two replacement drones for a little additional fee. This service is a little overkill when you just stick to going up and taking areal images but might be more beneficial when the intended purpose also includes learning the more complicated (high speed) flying techniques. As I intend to do both I signed up for the service for some peace of mind when learning crazy moves or letting others have a go at this unique experience.
Here's the details of the DJI Care Refresh service:
1. Replacement Service
DJI Care Refresh is created by SZ DJI Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "we" or "DJI") to give you peace of mind. DJI promises to provide replacement products if damage occurs accidentally under normal use to a covered aircraft and/or specified gimbal and camera, battery and propellers within the period of validity. DJI has a relationship with an insurance company that covers the cost of these programs.
2. Coverage
If damage occurs accidentally to your aircraft under normal use, DJI Care Refresh offers up to two replacement units for a small additional charge each time the service is requested. The replacement units will be in new or equivalent to new in performance and reliability.
For the Mavic series and Spark, the aircraft, gimbal, camera, battery and propellers can be replaced.
Some important details are listed below:
1) Damage to aircraft, gimbal or camera due to dropping, compression, or crashing caused by operator error or accident, will be supported by the replacement service provided that the unit is sent to DJI within the period of validity.
2) If you choose to apply for a replacement under DJI Care Refresh, your original aircraft needs to be returned to DJI and a replacement service fee will be charged. After replacement, the original product becomes DJI’s property and the replacement product is your property, with coverage effective for the remaining period of the Plan.
3) DJI Care Refresh and the corresponding product must be purchased from the same country or region. DJI Care Refresh only supports aircraft purchased from official or authorized channels, and its benefits are only eligible in the region where it was purchased.
4) DJI will cover shipping fees only in the country or region where DJI Care Refresh was purchased. Otherwise, the customer will bear responsibility any shipping and customs fees caused by sending the product from another region. DJI has the right to refuse service in this circumstance.
5) DJI Care Refresh includes two replacements. If you claim for replacement of your aircraft twice, DJI shall be considered to have fully executed the DJI Care Refresh service. The DJI Care Refresh service will then be terminated.
6) For Mavic 2, the covered gimbal under DJI Care Refresh is only for the gimbal with its serial number bound to the aircraft. If the gimbal was replaced in DJI’s official repair center (DJI’s official repair center mentioned in the agreement refers to DJI’s repair centers, official recommended repair centers, and authorized repair centers), the coverage stated in the agreement will be updated automatically and the replaced gimbal will be covered by DJI Care Refresh. The other gimbal that is removed from the aircraft will not be covered.
7) The first time replacement fee is EUR 119, the second time replacement fee is EUR 139.
3. Exclusions
The service does not cover:
1) Lost or partially lost aircraft and accessories.
2) Stolen or abandoned aircraft and accessories.
3) Damage caused by flight in unsuitable environments.
4) The remote controller or any accessories mounted to your aircraft.
5) Deliberate losses.
6) Abrasions and shell damage that do not affect the performance of the aircraft.
7) Direct or indirect losses caused by force majeure.
8 Replacement requests out of DJI Care Refresh’s period of validity.
9) Extra fees resulting from technical enhancements or performance improvements.
10) Damage resulting from unauthorized circuit restructuring, or the use of incompatible batteries and charger.
11) Damage resulting from using under-charged or defective batteries.
12) A gimbal that is repaired or replaced in a non-official repair center.
13) A gimbal that is removed from the aircraft and replaced by another one in DJI’s official repair center.

I am still trying to find out if I need a Mavic 2 Pro, or if my two P4 Advanced is just as good. I have been reading all there is to read about the M2P, and watched all the videos there is to watch. At least it feels like that.
The biggest advantage the M2P has over the P4A or P4P is of course the portability, it is so much easier to bring along on hiking trips. It also has some very nice new features like hyperlapse, and the active track (follow) mode is better and more precise.
But I am not convinced that the image quality is better on the M2P, on the contrary it seems the P4P and P4A in some situations gives better quality, both in terms of sharpness and colour.
There is a rumour that DJI will release a Mavic 2 Pro with built-in screen on the controller, that is interesting, both my P4A's have that. The screen is twice as bright as a phone or tablet, very convenient in sunshine.
So for the moment I will resist my DAS (drone aquisition syndrome), I am still happy with my big, white noisy bumble-bees.

Tried f/8 for some more DOF but the image seems less sharp than at the lower apertures so might have hit the diffraction limit.
Also forgot to turn on the RAW capture once again so here's a JPG from last weekend pulled through Silver Efex.
There was a very local dark cloud passing over while the sun was out which enabled some interesting shots :)
-
Interesting shot. On the horizon I see some towers, possibly electrical transmission towers. How for away are they?
-
Jan, what sort of ceiling height can be achieved (or permitted)? Can you get up to the cloud base?
-
Nice! I want one 8) ::)

Jan, what sort of ceiling height can be achieved (or permitted)? Can you get up to the cloud base?
Height is a function of the country you fly in. In America we are held by FAA to 400 AGL. I love my Pro2. The inch square imager is incredible!
