I went back to my spot this morning and they were really flying. I counted 12 in the air over the river at the same time. Not much fish catching going on though. But I did get a bunch of good shots, five of which I am posting below. Please let me have your thoughts. All taken with the Nikon D500 and 70-200 f/2.8 VR at 200mm. 1/3200 sec., f/7.1.

I love your osprey shots, and am rather envious.
-
Excellent!
You have certainly got the hang of photographing Ospreys now!

Thank you for your kind words. The next time you are in Florida, reserve a day and I will take you to them. You can collect a boatload of images for yourself and be envious no more.

Thank you for your very kind words. Part of the difficulty of learning to photograph bif is finding a location where they are congregated in sufficient numbers to allow one to get a meaningful amount of practice, as, at least where I live, they are usually quite scattered. This site has lots of them and is not too far from my home, so I was able to go back two days in a row over a weekend and then again on Wednesday to photograph them and had a great opportunity to experiment with various camera settings. Also, I received some valuable suggestions as to metering from you and Seapy and on picture control and ADL from Akira which I think helped improve my capture rate a lot, and for which I’d like to thank you all.

Looks like a lot of fun

Peter, next time you are in Florida, reserve a day for the Ospreys and I will take you to my spot so you can get enough shots to assuage your envy.

It is. It’s a beautiful spot, you just have to watch out for the gators and the water moccasins if you get too close to the water.

Thank you, maybe that will be possible one day.

This one was diving for the water, but pulled up at the last instant. Notice the legs are extended in preparation for catching a fish.

Thank you very much for the offer Arthur.
I will make sure I take you up on it if I ever get to Florida!
As a counter, if you ever come to Johannesburg, South Africa, give me a shout.
I have a friend in Gainesville, are you anywhere near?

We are about 35 miles south of Gainesville. I think you might like it, a very nice university town, certainly a favorite of mine.
I’d love to see S. Africa, so many opportunities to photograph spectacular scenery and wildlife, most of it completely new to me.

Thanks Arthur.
