In case anyone was wondering, I/we am in Rome, Italy, returning to the US on 8/31. I don't have a connection from Chicago to Houston because flooding closed the airport.
I don't have a house to go back to because it took at least 30" of water, 75 cm, (possibly more). Everything in it is probably ruined and that could include a couple of lenses and the fastest of several computers. Structural damage is probably equal to the pre flood value of the structure. It's likely the house will not be repaired. I will probably hold on to the lot and sell it in a few years. People are building large elevated houses in the area. I recall leaving my photo archive hard drives on high shelves.
It could have been worse. Some of my neighbors were rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter. One of my neighbors is a former US Army Ranger, an elite fighting unit. He rescued his 71 year old next door neighbor who was sitting in a chair in the rain on a high spot in his front yard. The neighborhood had not yet fully recovered from floods in 2015 and 2016.

Bad times hope you will able to recover from the loss, best of luck to you and M..

Hope you can recover as much as possible from your house and find a dry place to live. I never heared they produce Port Wine in Italy. I thought this was an Iberic/British phenomenon, as the name says in PORTugal.

Really sorry to hear about your loss, but I'm glad you didn't have to go through it in person. Coping with the aftermath will be bad enough.

I am in Italy. The photo is from last month in Portugal. Thanks for the good wishes, everyone.

Very sorry to hear of your bad news, and also that of your neighbours.

the pano from Portugal is very nice
-
Ron, so sorry to hear of your troubles, god only knows what you got back to!
-
My best wishes to you and your family and all the besieged people of southeastern Texas. What a terrible, unprecedented storm.

Ron, I wish you and your family a fastest possible return to the normal life. Take care!

Thanks. It's hard to believe what happened. A policeman drowned today, trying to help people.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the storm.
Glad to hear that you and your family are safe Ron.

Very sorry to hear about this disaster Ron. Our thoughts are prayers are with you and others. Hope everything gets normal soon.

We are making small steps at progress, and now have air connections back to Houston and a flood insurance claim filed. My neighbors tell me the city is in chaos. There is a midnight to 5 AM curfew in effect.
-
Hopefully everything will work out for the best. Take care, Ron.

Ron:
The degree of destruction in Texas is beyond anyone's worst nightmare.
Hopefully some of your most precious personal treasures were on high shelves and you will be able to retrieve some of them; and the insurance company will cover the rest of the damage and help you to get your lives back to normality as quickly as possible.

Ron if you need a glass of Port in the USA be sure to specify "Porto" or you might get served Thunderbird. :)
I hope things get better. I can't imagine though I might have to if the Pacific and North American plates decide to dance. If the air is clear today I could probably stand on my roof and see the San Andreas Fault.
People say the earth is angry but it doesn't care.
Dave

Good luck Ron, and make sure the next house is on a hill!
