D500 used three batteries on 1600 pictures, all Li-ion01. I bought two new batteries Li-ion20, but the camera does not go into standby mode, even when c2 standby timer is set to 4s. It seems like the new batteries drains at a speed of close to 10 % per hour, which is unacceptable for me. Is this a only my camera problem, or a common problem? Have changed between oem lenses and sigma lens 50-100 1.8, no difference, same also with Voigtlander 58 1.8. Have also changed memory card and formatted, no help.

Do you have wireless communications on? Try airplane mode.
I thought Nikon replaced -01 batteries with -20 types for free if you own a D500.
-
They did not tell me at Japanphoto.. Yes, the camera is in airplane mode. This seems to me to be a problem with the standby function. It measures light each 5th second.
-
This may be a problem with your camera, but get the 01 bateries replaced anyway.
-
The D500 is a little more fond of battery power than I had hoped, but as I never pay attention to the maker's overoptimistic battery ratings anyway, this behaviour was not entirely unexpected. In fact, in line with my other Nikons I have put to use the last decades.
I'd guess a fully charged battery would net me around 400-500 frames, thus your figures don't seem that deviating from expectations. I just added the battery grip with a second EN-EL15 inside to make the handling of the camera better and power capacity enhanced.
The battery doesn't seem to discharge at an unduly fast pace, though. The charge meter reads near 100% for days at end if the camera sits unused. I just checked the C2 setting and it was set to 10 minutes. The 'airplane' mode is always ON as this is necessary to make my Foolography GPS module work correctly with the D500.
The D500 is a mismatch with the -01 version of the EN-EL15 however and will deplete those batteries very rapidly. Get any -01 swapped with the new -20 version. I had no problem getting a healthy stack of new batteries as replacement for my old -01 ones. These new units also makes my 1V1 last many times longer powered than before.
-
EL-EN15 will be replaced with EL-EN15a along with the release of D7500. Apparently the capacity of the new "-a" is increased. You may want to wait for the "-a" to become available.
-
I support Bjørn's point. Nikon exchanges any *01-batteries to *20-batteries for free if you provide them with a purchase receipt from the D500. Did so for me any anyone I know of.
I use the original grip with 8 x 2500mAh "eneloop black"and airplane mode, no image review, no live view.
The camera lasts for weeks without a battery change in normal temperatures here in Germany (+25°C in the heat of summer -10°C in the cold of the winter, average at 8°C).
In other words: between 7000 and 9000 shots on one charge
-
I have two chargers - one for my D800 (Li-ion01) and one for my D500 (Li-ion20) batteries.
Would it make a difference if I just charge them all on one charger (for the Li-ion20 batteries) ?
-
Elsa, according to Nikon site, both MH-25 and MH-25a will charge both EN-EL15 and EN-EL15a. So, any combination of these chargers and the batteries should work fine.
-
I have replaced all my batteries to the -02 version, done at no charge by Nikon DK.
If I only need to charge one battery I use the MH-25a, but if in a hurry to charge multiple batteries I also use the MH-25, I have not noticed any difference.

thank you for the reply. I seem to recall reading something different - but could find it again !
But I do need help.
My camera does not automatically turn the display off (set for 4sec) and remains on. I also lost 50% battery charge in about 5 hours. This cant be right. - I was wrong - light does go off after 4 sec
Airplane mode ON
I have type Li0on20 batteries
I dont use live view.
Image reviewing - the usual - nothing different to that of my D800's
Just got this one a week ago - second hand - with 15k clicks on the clock - so really very new
what am I missing?
-
I had some problems with battery because the camera will try to transfer files even when turned off. I guess that is taken care of with the airplane mode...?
-
Have you tried to reset all, it is in the camera setup menu.
It will reset all but language, time and time zone.
If this doesn’t help I guess there’s a fault with the camera :(
-
Elsa and Paco, didn't you turn the sleep mode "OFF"? If so, you'd better make sure if your cameras are set to sleep after a certain period of time.
I don't know the exact term for the menu item (because I migrated fully to m4/3 now), but when I turned "off" the automatic sleep mode of D750 for an application and forgot about that, the camera drained the battery quickly.

excuse my ignorance - how does sleep mode display? I have display mode set to 4 secs - which means the light goes off after 4 seconds but the info is still on the little screen showing which mode it is in etc

I reset the settings when I purchased the body a couple of days ago - and then set it up as I wanted it

Does it show shutter speed and aperture? If yes there is a fault

No it doesnt show shutterspeed or Aperture
I have taken battery out now - charging it and see how it performs tomorrow :( I am leaving on a safari in a week's time, so I hope I can sort this out sooner rather than later - thanks for trying to help

Perhaps a thought to ponder - I have (finally!) switched to using the BBF which I have never used before - so I may be holding that down far more than I should - its a very new way of shooting for me.

When the sleep mode is activated, the display should look the same as when the camera is switched off (it only shows the remaining frames and the recognized cards, if I remember correctly).

What is BBF? Best boy friend?! :o :o :o
-
Ah - okey the D500 doesnt have a sleep mode - just "stand by" (and you choose for how long - mine set on shortest - 4 secs)
Best Boy Friend needed to buy me a D5 ya
Back Button Focus . ;D

D500 doesn't have a sleep mode? Really? Again, "sleep mode" may not be the correct term for the menu item. That being said, if your D500 drains the Li-ion20 battery that fast, something should be going wrong. D500 is supposed to be more power efficient than the already efficient D750.
And, yes, your best boy friend has to be rich and young. :D
-
Stand by mode is supposed to take care of the sleeping bit.
I have now found a lot of complaints about the battery drain via my friend Googling. But no solution that I could see.
Akira - you forgot the rest - nice young rich virile and must cook. Until then - I am stuck with Nikon as a lover haha. It must be a male body giving me all this trouble ;D ;D
Having said that - it does perform...

You make an absolutely charming couple though, and the birds are beautiful.

Thank you Basker - I am not contemplating divorce yet. Murder - perhaps

Hope your D500 is die-hard. :D

If a recent Nikon is set to AF-C and the lens has VR and VR is switched on and the AF-ON button is pressed then the CPU, AF-C and VR will all be active and draining the battery (nice run on sentence, yes?). I don't see this as a reason not to use the AF-ON button, AF-C and VR but rather a reason to carry extra batteries. I switch my batteries out when about 50% depleted.
The camera may still have a fault but the features mentioned above all shorten battery life.

Elsa, is this the in-camera battery, or the battery in the grip? Just wondering if a bad connection between grip and body could cause something like this?
Also, there are a couple of other settings in the Setup menu which I would make sure are turned off, just in case.
Such as making sure Bluetooth is not set to "send while off" and Eye-fi is set to disable.
I believe that airplane mode should take care of these, but just in case?
-
Not using VR
battery drains when in standby mode I not being used
Using battery in body - grip taken off
Bluetooth/wi fi is off when you enable Airplane mode - double checked

Hi Elsa
I find using VR and AFC on my D500 doesn't appear to pull too much (as gauged by times to recharge). If you have optimized C2, C4, D9, then another function to turn off is Touch-Screen (although one gets used to its conveniences).
Do you have 1 or more spare D500 capable batteries? If so, does each drain relatively fast?
hope you succeed in sorting out stamina of this wearied toy-boy :-) the D500 sure does deliver!

Elsa- Mine does not have that problem. I'm using all -20 batteries and have wi-fi off. If you'd like, this weekend I'll go through all my settings and post a complete list. If you configure your camera identically to mine and the battery still discharges rapidly, that would seem to indicate a hardware problem, which Nikon would need to fix. But, if the problem goes away, then it must have been your settings, and you can change one setting at a time back to your settings and observe the effect on battery drain until you identify the setting or settings causing the problem. Let me know if you'd like me to get the list of settings together.

Woody - I have 2 batteries - busy testing them. Read somewhere to leave battery out for a couple of hours - which I did last night. Put in this morning - left camera on - and its still at 100% (but I havent taken a shot - just left it on)
Will finish this battery over the weekend and then try the other one to see what is happening
Arthur - MANy thanks for the offer. Let me see how it goes this weekend before I make a call.
Also - it is 38degrees C here today - I am so NOT inclined t go out and shoot!
-
Now tested both batteries - and without using the cameras, they both held their charge. Which is what is required.
Obviously I will need to keep a check on the situation - as Thursday's drain was totally unacceptable.

the dye goes off after a while...
good choice of camera, Elsa!

Thanks Frank. Time will tell - especially with Nikon's latest crap with some bodies

Something important to check on older batteries - Nikon's official statement on EN EL15 batteries wrt voltage etc
