Description:
A by catch while shooting flowers.
Insect, probably a bee, sitting on an pale yellow iris.
Question to the skilful persons around: What dows it have on it's back?
-
Hi Thomas, while i'm not an insect expert (or any kind of expert really), it isn't fully clear to me what "it on its back" is. Could you add an arrow to point it out, or a circle around it?
-
"on it's back" -> The white extensions.
While I catched it in flight as well there is no sharper cacture with a more suitable focuspoint available.
-
My guess is we're seeing the rear of the fly's wings. Either that, or the fly is infested. ;D
-
Are these eggs from some other insect or creature that has parasitically used your fly as a host upon which the eggs will hatch, and upon whom the hatchlings may then feed?

That's what I thought, I supect some kind of infestation and hope that somebody with more knowledge might share it here.

Agreed!

Our chief biologist has spoken. Thank you Bill.

Thanks, Frank, but I expect that there are others here who know more than I do on this subject. I might qualify as chief California biologist here, or perhaps not.

Sorry, I'm not convinced.
This is neither a fly nor are the white objects 'Flügel'.
It's more probably a wild earth or sand bee, Andrena Flavipes.
I beleive the white objects are some type of infestation or eggs of another insect.
Here is a similar one in flight but not in focus.

The tiny white objects could indeed be eggs of another insect. The papery objects are wings.
