Discovering very malleable files with D800e especially for post processing which I hardly do. Just straightening in Capture NXD then export as TIFF, adjust with Kodak setting in SilverEfex and then resized and converted again in Capture NXD.

Awesome images, love the comp and processing!!

The smoker is cool.

Very nice series
-
some excellent images and the processing is rich and contrasty. Nice work

Love the first one. Nice lighting and atmosphere.

Thanks for comments everyone
I've really come to appreciate the D800E. Files have so much in them. The Df is really nice straight out of camera but the D800E seems to carry so much more 'nuance'. In addition, night shots on the fly with AFS lenses would be mostly in focus whereas the Df would struggle.
Akira - the last shot was at Kyoto station - the others were from an after dinner walk in Hong Kong.

JJ, thanks for the details of the images. I'm not familiar with the interior of the Kyoto station, but it is interesting to see how your individual perspective keeps the continuity of the series.

I have enjoyed tej series too. Not easy with night photos.
First one has something extra, ambiance, depth, movement, storytelling...
What did youbuse for postprocessing and bw conversion?

Paco - I'm embarrassed to say I have very little skill in postprocessing - but I'm always happy to learn better ways - so if any advice please help
I use Capture NX (either 2or D) to straighten and lift a little shadow
I then export as TIFF which can be opened by Nik SilverEfex Pro - I think using high smooth structure
I like the grain of Kodak (in this case I think Tmax400) so use that after. This seems to bring the right level of tone and gradations.
I save and then reopen in Capture NX to resize and export as JPG
I use to like using the Tonality app on my Mac which always got much better skin tones, but use Windows 10 now.
Here is the JPG conversion of RAW straight out of camera. I wanted to capture the bright building in the background of the very dark alley and got the 2 men walking just at that time - just luck

Thank you for the detailed response. Your processed image is way more interesting than the default. I think you did an excellent job there.
Thanks again!

Beautiful series, and the first one is great. The Nikon D800E is a great camera, I am always positively surprised by the results.

Great series, especially the first image!

Such lovely B&W photos JJ. Just going through some older posts.
The first one from the D800e, with the mood and smooth richness of the tones is very nice.
-
great moody shots with a very competent RAW development

I appreciate the unique and constant results
in this set… very cool!
