Title: Butterfly #2 - not a subtle guy
Post by: Randy Stout on March 04, 2017, 23:52:41
This Common morpho is from my outing yesterday.  Unlike the previous post, these guys are over the top vibrant, so felt good about letting his colors sing out!

D500 Sigma 180  f/3.5    f/8  1/80s  ISO 1250  R1C1 macro flash

Because I was working with an effective focal length of 270mm,  it was hard to get far enough away from large butterflies when shooting down on them.  Needed to be about six inches taller!  Not only do they not allow tripods, for some reason they frown on step ladders as well!  So, a pretty tight crop.

The right wing is just a bit out of the plane of focus, but felt there was enough detail overall to make the image work.

Because of the framing issue, I am looking into a 70-180mm micro , to allow more flexibility.

Cheers

Randy

Iridescent subjects are surprisingly hard to get right. You did well here.
