Title: Seems that Jakov is right
Post by: elsid on February 10, 2017, 13:44:40
I just tried my new toy. A silver Nikon 45/2.8P on the Df. I am with you Jakov.
(The mask in the third photo was in a shop window).

My main gripe with the 45/2.8 P is and always was its tiny size. What help is there in an otherwise excellent lens if you cannot operate it properly? Try putting on winter gloves ...

In fact, I often find myself using the forerunner to the 45P, namely, the 45/2.8 GN-Nikkor. It needs some internal modification to unlock focusing and aperture setting, and will benefit from having a CPU implant. It does offer a wider focusing collar and better ergonomics than the new model. The drawbacks is a stiffer focusing feel, not always a disadvantage, and focusing going in the opposite direction of other Nikkors. The latter is due to the flash adjustment feature for which this lens was conceived. The GN has more modest near limit, 0.8 vs 0.45m for the P, and less efficient coatings.

Bjorn, I agree about the problems arising from the size. I hope I will get used to it. As for the winter gloves, I use a pair that were made to be used by polo players (British made), that are not thick and they give some  protection from cold. But, where I live, Temperatures are not very low, as  compared to North Europe.

The 45/2.8P is surely an enjoyable lens.  However, I found the infinity stop of my sample was not accurate, and I had to set a little back from the stop.  Also, I found that the lens is not very resistant to ghost when a strong light source was in the image frame, although it uses fewest glass elements and has fewest glass surfaces.  The humble AF-S 50/1.8G is noticeably superior in terms of the flare- and ghost resistance.

Optics are fine handling the very narrow focus ring is a put-off,  ;)
