I finally got myself a used X-T1 - found a 20% off Black Friday offer. Very good condition - looks almost new.
I decided the X-T2 is too expensive for my use and a used X-T1 seemed like a good alternative (discussed in this thread if you're interested: http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,4331.75.html (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,4331.75.html)).
I also purchased a used XF 14mm/2.8. I've never worked with anything that wide so I'll have a few things to learn.
Just for the fun I compared the X-T1 to my old Fujica ST801 :)
-
Nice one Lars, I'm quite sure you will easily take to the X-T1! A super little machine.
I bought one in January as a stopgap until the X-T2 was made available, and was loath to give it up when the X-T2 finally appeared because I can't warrant having two bodies!
-
Congratulations! Great find ;)
-
Congrats, Lars. Looks very pretty !!
-
Hopefully you will be pleased with the 14mm lens. It is unusually good for it's size and price.
Congratulations for saving your old camera(s). I wish I had all my old cameras and bicycles.
-
Congratulations, excellent choice.
I have kept the X-T1 when I recently bought the X-T2 (that was a bargain I could not let go, I still don't believe my luck)
The 14mm lens is also excellent, one of my favourites.
I also gave in to the Black Friday deals temptation, yesterday I ordered a 55-200mm at a reasonable price. I am having a bit of buyer's remorse now but it's a done deal, gotta get used with it ;D
-
Thanks everyone! :)
Mike - I agree, it feels like a super little machine but I'm a bit surprised how small it actually is. Also, the buttons are smaller than on my X-E1 and the button layout is different and requires some getting used to. I'm going to keep my X-E1 - I still like it and it's not worth much so no need to get rid of it.
Keith and Simone - the 14mm has been on my photog bucket list for a long time and I look forward to (hopefully) learn to shoot with a super wide.
Keith - it is fun to have the old cameras around and I have been shooting film occasionally the recent years.
Simone - I know how you feel ... I'm also having a fair bit of buyer's remorse these days :) I have the 55-200 and think it's a really nice lens - congrats!
-
Just a few snapshots with the X-T1 w/18-55 in the afternoon sunlight. My first conversions of second gen X-Trans files in Capture One 9.3.
Last one .. could my lens need cleaning :-\

Hum... yeah, a bit dirty :)
Nice post-autumn colours.

Lars, when I unpacked my new X-T2 I was amazed how small it seemed, its almost like something has been left off!
Now of course you will feel the itch to add to the lens stable!
The photos are very good, especially number 4 the gnarled tree trunk!
-
Thanks Simone and Mike!
Mike - my itch was relieved (for a while) today when I received the 14mm :)
The 14mm is very nice but the aperture ring is quite loose .. I had read reviews mentioning this and it can even shift a bit on the lens barrel.
Here is a snapshot from this afternoon - it was a bit difficult to nail focus via AF on the water (with my X-E1) but it would probably be the same with the 18-55.
Btw. Mike - the gnarled tree trunk is (of course) from H.C. Andersen's faiy tale "The Tinder-box" - H.C. Andersen had friends in this town.

That's a lovely sunset.
The 14mm is a fabulous lens, quite wide but not too much, and very well corrected, it practically has no distortion.
-
Lars, you will become familiar with the Fuji 14mm "light-touch" aperture ring by constantly and unknowingly shifting it off of your desired setting. I keep black gaffer's tape scraps stuck to my XE-1 and the lens shades in case I become seriously annoyed at it. Usually, I just keep checking it more often than I would with a conventionally designed lens.
The Fuji 23mm/1.4 ring action isn't much stiffer, and can also easily be knocked off of the desired setting.

The few shots I've managed to take in fair light today (and turned out sharp..) impressed me. But with the few shots I think I've realised what you mean when you say "very well corrected" and "practically no distortion". I'm sure I'll enjoy this lens.

I'm sure I'll get both annoyed and familiar with it. I've read that some people use a rubber band to tight it up, but good advice with small pieces if gaffer's tape :) .. and I'll check the aperture setting more often(!).
As for the 23/1.4 I'm surprised Fuji didn't learn the lesson from the 14mm but I thin it's an issue with several of their lenses.
-
Lars, Thanks for reminding me of the rubber band "fix". I keep meaning to try it, but now I will!
-
The lake and sky shot is really super! The tree shot is one of those where the more you look at it the more you see, and it's association with H C Andersen is very interesting, super!
My 23mm 1.4 Aperture ring has a light touch but is not too bad, I think the problem relates to the early lenses of which I believe the 14mm is one! It's something that Fujifilm needs to address in updating these lenses, I can imagine how annying it could be. My 16mm is not very loose thankfully but could do with being tweaked as these lenses are produced, one would hope there is an ongoing design review of Fuji products. I wonder if the new lock feature added to the X-T2 is an attempt to get at what is definitely a let down with Fujinon lenses?

You're welcome Keith .. I will probably give it a chance myself.

I did consider that it's probably an early copy of the 14mm I've purchased and whether I should wait for one with a more tight aperture ring. But I've already waited a long time to get my hands on one at the price I paid - who knows when a better one comes by. I can probably get used to it. I've seen that there are people who modify the lens themselves to fix it .. not ready for that yet :-\
How does the Lock feature work on the X-T2?
-
Only had a quick look see, but not used it yet, but as far as I can tell every control can be selected to be locked. And the lock can be ascribed to a function button, wether that can act as a toggle I haven't worked out yet, to save delving into the menus! I hope it will as that would be logical, otherwise it means tackleing the menus!
-
Lars, had a further look at the lock setting which when assigned to a function button it acts as a shortcut to the menu and allows access to allow any setting in the camera, which can be individually selected or all of them. After which you may select the lock function, not forgetting not to lock the allocated function button otherwise it is necessary to delve into the menus to turn the lock off, PHEW
When you have the camera in your hands it is easier to do than explain!
-
Thanks Keith and Mike for your comments on the aperture ring - last week I had the chance to compare my 14mm with a brand new one and the aperture ring of the new one was noticeably better. Probably like the 23/1.4 both of you mentioned.

Mike - sorry for the late reply. I was pretty sure I had answered this but I've probably forgot to press "Post" :(
I'm not going to have that camera in my hands for now .. it would probably be too hard to resist keeping it! If I understand you correctly the X-T2 has a feature assign a function button to e.g. lock the chosen aperture setting and hence bypassing the selected value on the aperture ring? Anyway.. I'm going to get a rubber band for now and not the X-T2 ;D
I ended up returning the X-T1 - unfortunately. Too many pixel errors on the sensor (e.g. at iso 1600) and I couldn't get a confirmation from Fujifilm that they were able to fix it before my purchase cancellation period ran out. Too bad.
The 14mm is staying with me .. here are some shots from late afternoon close to sundown.
-
Lars no sweat I do that a bit too. I reckon it would be difficult to put an X-T2 down after a session in the hand!
There should be lots of X-T1s out there since the launch of the X-T2. Maybe keep looking!
-
Sorry to hear that! I hope you find a better copy next time! - There should be many of these around ;)
