After seeing this kind of machinery in vitro I can only begin to appreciate how difficult and challenging their depiction really is. The first image is simply amazing. I assume the boughs and their greenery convey a message other than that of presenting an image scale?

It is also evident that optics without any significant longitudinal CA is a godsend in creating the detailed documentation of all the intricate, shining machine parts.

Thanks Bjørn! Yes the green leaves was to convey the environmental aspect of the engines performance.

CA is a major factor when shooting the shiny parts,,,

Beautiful images.
A technology whose perfection is nearing the heights seen at the diesel engine museum in  Lofoten  ;)

Great series.  The first one is indeed impressive.  And the others are very crisp and full of detail.

Erik,

You made my day with the images in this topic. Engines with open rocker arms and catwalks for the oilers, wipers and engineers that maintained them were part of my childhood environment.

You have shown a worthwhile subject with clarity and remarkable insight. Thank you.

Erik, these are wonderfully well made pieces and beautifully photographed.

My first real job was the summer after my eighteenth birthday working at the Pratt and Whitney division of United Aircraft making parts for jet engines. I was an oiler on the night-shift and what I saw then and there never looked this good!

Thank You all! Appreciated :)

The piston ring grooves is also a favorite for me, they are hardened and grinded,,,

Amazing detail and excellent lighting !
Maybe a typical masculine question but can you say something about diameter of the cilinder and liters, torque & horsepower of the engine  :o?
Title: Re: Diesel Engines
Post by: Erik Lund on November 06, 2016, 18:57:48
Thank you!

These are big,,, 12 cylinders up to about 90 cm or 35 inch, piston diameter, stroke about 200 cm, 100,000 HP and enough torque,,,
Fully electronic, no camshaft so hydraulically actuated fuel injectors and exhaust valves,,,

Very nice pictures, reminds me of the times when my farther worked at the B&W engine factory at Christanshavn.
Those engines are impressive, you need an elevator to get to the top  ;)

On my 105 VR the use of a polarising filter seem to reduce CA?

Exemplary product shots...no, actually these are not just the product shots.  They make me want to scrutinize the details!

Indeed - what more can one say, and especially the first one as Bjørn and others have noted.

What lenses did you use Erik?

Great series.  The first one is indeed impressive.  And the others are very crisp and full of detail.

Eric, as someone who worked for some years at a government research establishment that tested diesels, I'm impressed by the cleanliness of your test cell.

Our diesels powered trains and minesweepers!

Erik, these are all extremely good, sharp and clean.
Mike, I was an Engineer on a Fram 1 Destroyer...didn't know what clean was even though the Chief Engineer really tried to motivate the CPOs to keep the Engine Room spic and spam. Forget the Boiler Room  ;D  Of course not Diesel but I spent the minimum time I could on Diesel boats (Subs) which were not much better, a lot to be said for the Nuke boats  ;)
