Roger Cicala over at Lensrentals cleans a "weather sealed" D810 that has been to the Burning Man festival. It's a lot worse than I would have thought.

Good read, even if the bad and inconsiderate behaviour of some people is beyond the pale. Thanks for postiing - the LensRental write ups are usually well worth reading.

This is just unbelievable, but not really in fact: I spend a week photographing kite surfers on the very windy beach of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands - SP); despite extreme precautions (plastic bags etc); wet cleaning of the equipment after each daily session etc.; I found sand particles six months later. As none of the equipment have been opened / lenses been replaced during the shooting sessions, I don't believe many sand particles went in i.e. I haven't noticed but I didn't proceed to any dismantling neither.

I think it is not fair to rent a camera and give it back like that!

You can say that again! You shouldn't really rent equipment for such occasions, simple as that. Use your own gear or don't go. I really hope Lensrentals will blacklist the guy who handed in the D810 in that condition. I certainly wouldn't want to do business with someone who abuses my cameras like that. And in the end all those users who hand in their cameras or lenses in immaculate condition will pay for the guy who hands in a camera looking like that poor D810.
I'm also not surprised even weather sealed cameras get so much stuff inside. There are just too many switches and openings, and fine sand or salt spray are almost impossible to keep out in windy conditions anyway.

It's obviously not covered so the returner will have to pay. "It does not cover gross negligence, reckless, or intentional damage."
Interesting article. ;)

Yes, they make him pay and possibly blacklist him too. Yet: I do not like people who act like that.

Totally agree!
