Title: Starting in IR photography
Post by: Jørgen Ramskov on July 09, 2016, 23:39:20
Mods: I expect to continue to post new shots in this thread. Not sure if this is the right place to put this thread, feel free to move it.

As mentioned in another thread, I got a D40x converted to IR (590nm) which means a completely new world opens op for me. I haven't had time to shoot anything but what is around in our very small garden so far. I have googled a bit, which produced https://photographylife.com/how-to-process-infrared-photographs and I looked a bit at Lifepixel.com. I have more or less for the first time ever, actually tried to use Photoshop. It required a bit of googling to find the channel mixer :P It's been fun and interesting to spend a few hours today fooling around with wierd colors :)

Any help/hints/suggestions/links/critique are more than welcome!

I'd like to excuse in advance for the lack of quality, but this is where I'm at currently. Here's what I've ended up with today:

#1 A rose. I consider this to be a failure, but that's part of the process.

#2 Berries. I find this a lot more interesting.

#3 I had trouble deciding between this and #4.

#4 Chives. This is my personal favorite so far.

#5 A cute litte flower, but boring, could easily be my lacking PP skills.

Going to bring it with me on a trip to Norway next week, hopefully I'll have some time to go shoot :)

After three weeks vacation I'm back at work. Haven't spent much time on IR photgraphy, but the camera has been with me and I have used it a bit here and there. The "scary" thing for me is the PP given my quite limited qualifications there.

Here's a few shots from Norway from a few weeks ago:

Norway is indeed wonderful.  Not equally sure about the channel-swapping approach, through. There are better ways to process an IR image.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I had never been there before, just went there with family for dinner and when I saw that view, I walked back to car to fetch the IR camera to take the photo above :)

Olivier: perhaps I should make a green version :D The only thing I've done is remove a few birds that looked more like dust spots.

Nice one Jørgen! You have to do some extensive googling to master Photoshop, but how does one eat an elephant? One bite at a time ;)

Green version coming up. Less than 1 minute fix in PS, with a little extras throw into for good measure.

You *did* say you wished to make a green version :D

IR simply removes the rules, implied or explicit.

Title: Re: Starting in IR photography
Post by: Hugh_3170 on September 17, 2016, 06:31:54
I like them both, but green it is for me - the removal of rules has certainly worked well in this instance.

Maybe I might remove a little of the fore ground to create a panoramic look, but that is just me.  Its nice with either format.
Title: Re: Starting in IR photography
Post by: Jørgen Ramskov on September 18, 2016, 10:50:26
Thanks for creating that Bjørn. I was thinking about Olivers comment about the sky looking fake and make a sort of "green room" version with the sky and only the sky being very green, but my photoshop skills are at level 0.
Title: Re: Starting in IR photography
Post by: Bjørn Rørslett on September 18, 2016, 11:17:46
Initially I made only sky green, but felt the scene looked worse that way. Thus went all in with enhanced greens everywhere, enforcing water ripples (very easy as the original had the ingredients present) etc. The red vegetation acts as a counterpoint to anchor the composition.

About trimming the foreground to make a panorama-lime frame, I decided against removing parts of it as it apparently is required to give breathing depth to the overall scene. Cut away and the scene becomes lifeless and flat, no depth at all.

By the way, learning to use a program such as Photoshop or equivalent (Gimp is freeware and quite capable; surely more alternatives exist) is well worth the time and efforts invested.

Have been sort of away from NG for a bit - haven't used my IR camera or my D750 much, but I got a chance to borrow a Nikon 105mm f/1.4 (what a lens!) and why not try it out on the modified D40x camera? I can't change aperture so all is shot at f/1.4, but that's what this lens is for isn't it? ;)

The D40x cannot set the aperture on any 'E' lens. However, you can set the aperture with say your D750, press the stop-down button, and while keeping it depressed, remove the lens and put it on your D40x. Simply once you have tried it. This trick even works when the 'E' lens subsequently is mounted on an ancient F or F2 :D

The only caveat is the new host will display '1.4' instead of the aperture you set earlier. No wonder as the non-compatible camera doesn't know how to control the aperture in the first place. But the lens remains set to whatever value you selected initially.

Post by: Jørgen Ramskov on March 03, 2017, 21:10:13
Thanks for the explanation and "cheat", I'll try that this weekend  :)

As for the IR images, I'd like to add that I still find the PP to be a "curious" experience understood as it being fun to explore what you can end up with, editing an image. You often end in a completely different place than what you imagined.
Title: Re: Starting in IR photography
Post by: Øivind Tøien on March 03, 2017, 22:27:24
Thanks for this interesting information. I would have thought that the lens would reset, once powering down, so this is quite a surprise.
I just tried it on the 300PF. So aperture mechanism apparently has a motor that drives it in both directions, and not one that works against a spring load. It is probably wise to turn VR off before applying this technique to a VR lens.
Title: Re: Starting in IR photography
Post by: Bjørn Rørslett on March 03, 2017, 22:32:52
The 'E' lens has no mechanical means of controlling the aperture. Thus as far as the non-compatible camera is concerned, the lens hasn't an aperture at all :D Meaning also that the metering works, but in effect with stop-down metering.

Title: Re: Starting in IR photography
Post by: Øivind Tøien on March 03, 2017, 22:41:45
Thanks, that is another good point to keep in mind.
Title: Re: Starting in IR photography
Post by: Bjørn Rørslett on March 03, 2017, 22:55:29
Nikon has taken many steps to prevent users from doing true stop-down metering, but these measures are null and void when it comes to 'E' lenses on non-compatible cameras.

The camera only "sees" a reduced incoming light intensity and has no knowledge at what aperture this occurs. Since the camera cannot change the set aperture this is a matter of no concern.Light metering will function normally.

One might say Nikon has tricked themselves in this manner.

This insider's tip work with all 'E' lenses I have tested so far.

I have tried the 105 Nikkor-P f2,5 on my D40x the last few days and it seem like a decent performer. Little focus shift and very sharp IMO. I have used the B+W IR830 filter and the lens wide open. Like it a lot.
