Title: Hello NG world
Post by: basker on June 26, 2016, 17:04:59
I am 73 and live in South Texas. My house is almost due north of the Alamo, and a bit more south than Marrakesh.

I retired two years ago. Then I found some family slide photos that needed to be copied. Then I remembered that I had some old Nikkor lenses. Well, you can already see where this is going. I got a Df this month. My favorite subjects, so far, are flowers, trees and women's amateur rugby.

Finding NG was like discovering an advanced civilization hidden in plain sight. Very nicely done folks!

"an advanced civilization hidden in plain sight"

I like that statement - a lot. You are of course very welcome here on NG. Just show us images you either prefer yourself, or maybe more interestingly, pictures you feel you didn't quite manage to get right. Lots of people will add their comments and try their best to be of assistance.

There are also discourses on a more general level open for everybody to participate in. Just make sure you read through the Site Guidelines and stick to them.

Thank you for the compliment. We are all trying hard to be kind and inpiring direct critique is possible witout insults.

Learning on all levels. Only the hormones can sometimes be in oversupply. Which is to be expected in a nearly
male only place. Yet moderators do a wonderful job.

Welcome Welcome Welcome!!!!

Bjørn,

My career was primarily hardware support in an enterprise environment. The greatest possible virtue there was to be "non-disruptive." I see the same high standards applied here, and intend to comply. Seem like this place deals in actual information gained by personal experience. I want in on that. The images I prefer and the ones I feel I have not gotten right are usually the same. I am trying learn how to see the results more objectively, and this is the best resource I have found. I am serious about that.

Frank,

At my age hormones, especially my own, are not much of a problem. The kindness I was asking for is taking the time and effort to give me useful information about my images. You did that, and thank you. I know giving specific and useful information is really hard work. I do value it highly.

Welcome to this "planet" Sam!
I've been to the Alamo, never been in Marrakech but I might have been close to where you live San Antone/Gruene/Fredricksburg/etc. Anyways, A Df and interest for photography fits perfectly in here 😊

Paco,

Thanks for the welcome and for understanding what I meant in the quote.  :)

Sten,

I have never been to Marrakech either. The town I live in is completely surrounded by San Antonio, so I use the Alamo as a recognizable landmark. Gruene and Fredricksburg are likable places. I would love to see some pictures from your trip. I have wanted a Df for a while, but was not sure if it was the right thing to do. Reading NG made me realize waiting was a mistake. I am glad I got it while I'm still young enough to grow into it!

Best regards to both of you,
Sam

Hi Sam,
welcome to NG. Your initial critique posting found me already.
Please continue posting - we all love photos.
In my experience shooting on, re-thinking the attempts and showing the images to fellow photographers will help closing the gap you feel.

Happy to have you here.

Anthony,

Thank you for the welcome. I hope you are finding retirement as pleasant as I have. I intend to post something specific to my area soon, and will look for your images as well.

Thomas,

I moved my thread from critique to nature. My impression is that may be a more appropriate spot. Also realize now that I should look for other plumeria images to help me break out of my rut. Interacting with you has already helped me a lot. I noticed, after the re-edit, the spider looks silver on one side and gold on the other. It must be picking up the yellow reflecting from the flower.

I support that idea. Try to shoot on, gaining experience is good. You seem to be a ressourceful thinker, don't let that get in the way of creativity.
Once you figured something out go on and try it on the next capture. Alway try something new, unthougt. So far my experience.

Interacting with you has already helped me a lot.
Thank you, you are welcome.

It does. There is very few direct light and the diffuse light always carries color information from the reflecting surface it comes from.

Thomas,

Went out later yesterday evening and earlier this morning. Switched to an AI 135/3.5 so I could shoot from farther away, then had to add a 14mm extension so I could get close enough. Made it easier, maybe better. Will post results later.

Erik,

Thank you very much for the cheerful welcome.

Bruno,

Thank you for the welcome message. I am looking forward to a pleasant trip.
