interesting design - the aperture seems to have many more blades than usual.

Very interesting. Also the industrial solutions.

That could be Erlewine material

Possible interesting, but that web site has a truly bad design and the stuff is difficult to read. Just keeps moving around ...

Hopefully the new lens manufacturers keep popping up.  Interested in seeing tests of the Irix lenses as well as this one.  While Nikon cranks out the plastic AF lenses, perhaps we will get new quality metal manual focus lenses elsewhere.

On a side note, what is up with manufacturers not providing details on aperature blades for lenses?  From unknown manufacturers up to Zeiss, it is common.  Especially with a lens like this where they quite obviously are offering something unique in terms of the blades, you'd think they would mention it.

Is there any information on price?

The price is not released yet.

And a "review" or some real world samples.

The latter reference showed the lens has a propensity to flare, low contrast, flat colours, and lots of geometric distortion. Geometric vignetting, in contrast, seems to be acceptably low and the tendency to make 'cat's eyes' is apparently kept under control.

Further evaluation will have to wait until samples are released in the wild and price is known.

Had a look at the pictures here and realised that I recognised the scenes - the pictures are from Auckland city in New Zealand. Unusual for a prototype lens to end up here!

As for the number of aperture blades, some pictures here show diffraction stars with 14 points, so the lens has 7 aperture blades.

I counted 14 rays as well, but the images of the lens shows a blade count certainly higher than 7.  Wouldn't 14 blades create 14 rays?

Yes, especially if they have straight edges and opposite pairs are closely parallel.

What Roland said.  The odd number of the aperture blades doubles the number of the rays of the star image.

I'm aware of that Akira.  It definitely has 14 blades according to the images of the lens

Thanks for the image, Tristin.  You are right.  Now I would suspect that the aperture is not automatic (as in Nikkor "Auto"), similar to Samyang lenses of non-Nikon mounts.

I don't know what I would do with this if I had one.  Thin DOF is a useful technique, but it is one among many.  I shoot lots of portraits with a 50 at f/2 or f/1.8 but wider results in problems like ears being OOF.  It's in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.  Don't think I am ordering one of these.  If anyone scores one, please post images here.

Whether this lens would be useful for portraits wide open remain to be seen.  I know the 50/1.2 really does magical busts wide open, but can't say I'm ever concerned with sharp ears.  Unless I'm at f/1.2 for the magic, I skip straight to f/2.  Anyhow, f/1.2 could be useful on a 35mm for those times when I am struggling to get as much separation as possible, though I need to flesh out my available focal lengths more before I'm shopping for a 35mm.  I think we can all agree that 1.2/1.4 and even 1.8 are all good enough when it comes to low light with modern sensors.  The question is will this lens bring some kind of magic wide open.  None of the shots I saw showed any, but I also know someone could take hundreds of shots with my beloved 50/1.2 and fail to demonstrate it's magic as well.

Regardless of this lenses quality, I hope it sells well.  If the likes of Samyang, Irix and DZOptics are successful then we will likely see more manual primes popping up.  Which I am happy about.  We are bound to get a gem at some point if they keep popping up . . . I hope.

Tristin, another CV125 for example would be rather nice to have "popping up" ........

That is an interesting and true point. I see this a lot around in 'reviews' or Flickr for all kind of good lenses. Rather mediocre or very average examples.
