Title: Any alternatives for poor plastic caps
Post by: atpaula on May 02, 2016, 03:31:58
I wonder if Nikon engineers are ashamed of the caps they produce for the 14-24mm f/2.8G and the fisheye 16mm f/2.8D, two lenses I use a lot.
I keep scotch tape in the inner surface of them to increase friction, thus preventing them to fall / get lost.
These caps can hardly keep dust outside.
I love the experience of using my old fisheye 16mm f/3.5 and its lovely cap. Designers should take this in consideration too, not only cost or optical performance.
Do you know any replacement caps for those lenses?

I agree with your comments. I also stick something inside my cap for a tighter fit as the damn thing keeps getting lost. Bad design

use a sock  :o :o :o

or just buy the expensive suede cover from bag makers.

Maybe you can put the original lens cap into the neoprene lens cover of appropriate size and use the combo as lens cover.  The attaching/removing will be a bit clumsy, but you are much less likely to lose the cap.

Inside the Nikon accessory lens cover is the lens cap for AF-D 16/2.8 and DX 10.5/2.8 fisheye.

Thank you for the response.
Akira,
I was hoping that a dedicated cap was being produced by someone.

Yeah, it is really strange that the caps for the lenses that don't accept protection filters are the most sloppy...

Nikon should learn from Samyang how to make proper caps for the lenses with bulbous front elemets:
