hi
Quite heavy reading, but lot of information...

Interesting, heavy reading, so I started with scrolling ;)
First thing I noticed are the many photo's, which is nice. But the flare examples are a bit exaggerated to my idea. They are all very appropriate for the flare-topic...

I like the totally uncoated lenses they built for demo purposes...very cool.

Where are my flares?! :o

I recall my initial testing of the 24-70/2.8 back in late 2006, prior to the launch of the D3, when I received an experimental sample. Optics were the final design, but there was no final coating on any of the surfaces. Nikon wanted me to check the usefulness of the lens as such, including AF speed, which was phenomenal compared to the existing lenses at that time. However, it flared like crazy; no wonder considering the lack of multicoating.

It's interesting that the AF system didn't care much about the flares.

I used only the centre AF point, due to the potential flare issue.
A pity I couldn't keep this early pilot sample, as it possibly might be useful for UV due to the lack of multicoating. I also had to delete all test images according to the NDA involved.

Very nice review article. Thanks for the link!
Having been a close colleague of a top notch multi-coating theorist, I was curious about what would be said about multi-coating beyond three layer and the recent nano-coating. Nice to see that both were briefly discussed.
