. . . but I find a certain fascination in the remains of wild creatures. This young red-deer (it was a two-year-old) very probably died of starvation during the past winter, and now lies within a metre of the lush grass which would have saved its life, had our winter not been so cold and so prolonged. There is a poignancy in that.

Indeed - but IMHO you need to dig down and find your dark side.
This subject needs darkness and horror so revisit after dusk in full moon with some Tri-X ...
Just saying ;) Probably your too much of a bright lights gentleman to go into this...
