Let's see your sun shots. :) Living in the desert, it is one of my favorite things to shoot. Here is tonight's sunset. Taken in Apple Valley, California. Nikon D800E/Rokinon 14mm 2.8

Hi, Mike
I was just an hour down the road from you in Pioneertown this past weekend :)
I love it out there in the desert, haven't spent to much time in Apple Valley though.

Hi, Mike

You did at least wave as you jetted down the 15, I hope! :)
I have only lived out here for a few years myself. Originally from down the hill in Orange County. I really enjoy being away from the hustle and bustle of the city and burbs. I am still only 90 minutes from the "life" if I feel the need.
Never been to Pioneer Town. Is that like Calico Ghost Town in Barstow? I'll have to look it up. I hope to get a small 4WD next year and really take advantage of the area. :)
-
Oh you've got to go to Pioneertown. It is just a few minutes outside of Joshua Tree/Yucca Valley. They originally built the town to film old westerns there I believe, but the main draw these days is Pappy & Harriets bar and restaurant. It's kind of the only thing there. Delicious food and good music.
We take our Jeep out there from time to time. There's a fun 4WD road that connects Big Bear and Pioneetown.
-
Thanks for the tip Charlie. Added to the "must do" list!!! :)
-
nice pic Mike.
I always find it difficult to shoot when the sun is in that position - (small and low) never know where to put it in the frame.
The attached photo was taken 9 years and 10 days ago. I trip I will never forget.
-
I often find the mundane 'flogged to death' subject of a sunset more entertaining when the sun itself is not directly within the frame. The long transition between day and nightfall at the high latitudes in summer is ideal for such photographic enjoyment. The sky colour changes are as delicate as they are amazing.

What a beautiful shot Elsa! An unforgettable trip with an unforgettable capture!
I find sunsets challenging also. So many factors involved. Location, time of year, cloud cover etc. But they can be very rewarding. You really never know what you are going to get until you start to process them. :)

I do agree with you. Typically the best, most interesting colors are not display until the sun has dipped below the horizon. What a very creative, interesting and beautiful shot Bjorn!

Sometimes all things click into position seen visually, but you aren't there at the proper place. Then run like the wind to make the image happen. As the image is already pre-formed, all that remains is get there and snap the picture.
The components of this snapshot are readily available of course, but I needed to get there quickly as the window of opportunity was extremely narrow. Can you see what the parts making up this picture are? (very simple and obvious answer, by the way)

Here is one of my favorite "sun in the frame" photo's. Taken just down the street from where I live here in Apple Valley.

Andrea and I were racing out of Tucson, Arizona, to get to the spot for which I had envisioned shooting the giant Saguaro cacti against the sunset. We had been there earlier, but sun position was all wrong, so had to wait until late in the afternoon.
However with the sinking sun reflecting off the side mirror in conjunction with Andrea's fast-paced driving (oh well, as fast as a Focus Escape can go, which is not NASCAR style), the tune and lyrics of the Pink Floyd song 'Two Suns in the Sunset'* instantly filled my senses and I did my best to make that into an image. Not that easy within the cramped space at hand and Andrea believing I was about to fall out of the car which I nearly did. But I got my shot.
*Pink Floyd: The Final Cut (1983)
-
(continued from last post)
When we finally got to the planned Saguaro location, the sun already had gone under the horizon. But now the planets Venus and Jupiter adorned the sky to make a striking contrast to the classic Saguaro shape.
-
On the first trip to south Africa, in 2009, I was amazed how fast the sun rose in the morning and how big the disk appeared.
-
This is the morning sun rising over my local lake, during a period of severe cold. At that night we had down to -25C which of course is nothing extreme, but quite unusual for Oslo with its coastal climate. The lake still hadn't frozen over as it is quite deep and remains ice-free until late November or December most years. The recent spell of frost initiated ice sheet forming along the lake shores though. The supercooled surface water lapped against the edges of these ice sheets and made the lake into a giant ice-cube machine. Quite photogenic in fact and I spent many a cold morning there capturing these marvels of Nature.

Andy - I love Namibia #1
Bjorn - great sunset shot. I love the way side mirrors look on the road, and you used it well here.

Here is one from South Africa. As Bjørn already mentioned the speed of the sunrise and or sunset in South Africa is on the quick side :)

Mongo is really enjoying this series; especially the more creative and abstract images of sunrise/sunset.
Here is one that unfortunately is still very convention of Kirra Beach with one of the Gold Coast cities in silhouette in the background

one from the summer
-
Joost, this is amazing! How long was the lens? Over 1000mm?
-
Thank you very much, Akira,
It was made with a 400mm f/3.5 ais coupled to a tc300 2x teleconverter, giving 800mm, on a crop sensor (D500). So your 1000 mm guess was quite spot-on!
-
Joost, thanks for the detail. I love the extreme effect of the compression of a long lens and the turbulence of the air. The color is great, too!

Joost, I love sun shots in which the sun is BIG like a basketball. It's very dramatic!
Brute, has a more romantic and calm approach that I like equally!

We had a nice sunset yesterday evening while having dinner on the balcony...

What a view, you are blessed, Olivier!
Beautiful pinks in the sky!
-
Indeed the color is gorgeous! Good to know that such wideangle images with exaggerated perspective can be stitched properly. Photomerge?
-
Thanks. We are lucky indeed. My wife is documenting the very different sunsets (the show is new every night) with her phone and she has accumulated quite a collection in the 6 months she has spent in Singapore.

Thanks Paco, following the morning light slowly appear on the Alaska Range while monitoring the lunar eclipse was really a high of that experience. I found the repeating pattern on the ridges low in front of the Mount Hayes quite interesting, now enhanced by the current state of snow melting.
-
Indeed the many layers in gradient of color and shapes makes foundation to the image, in form, depth and contrast. It prepares the surprise for the gentle sunrise, the magic floating mountains and the open space at the top. Never stop the mountain´s desire to fly :)
I´m sure it was an spectacular sight.
Thanks for sharing it!

Hope this one is not as odd. It was not smokey this time and the sun has moved farther south in 20 days.
