thanks, this took me longer than usual :o :o :o
this is an easy lens to fix. even by a beginner. but there are a few gotchas
-
Thanks Richard, I have no need to dismantle mine yet I think. And I agree it is a good deal and performs well wide open, at least on my Sony A7

you are welcome! that looks mint :o :o :o
now that we now that the focusing ring is only being held by a few small screws, we need to be careful on how much force we use to turn the focus ring ::)

Actually mine is an early multicoated Q-C
And you probably all know this episode 48 of NIKKOR - The Thousands and one Nights on the Nikkor-Q Auto 200mm f/4 (http://www.nikkor.com/story/0048/), but just in case.
-
Stunning shots, Arend. The white one is very delicate.
-
The 200 mm f/4 Nikkor Q has some appeal for use in UV as well. Demonstrated here with a Phalaenopsis (Moth orchid) and Japanese characters "written" with sunblocking lotion. Hopefully my son had studied his Japanese diligently (he wrote this). Must have learnt something of the language after living in the country for 18 months. Or so I hope as I paid the tuition fees !!
Do note only the first version without the 'C' designation should be used. The last QC will work - sort of - however, its UV sensitivity and UV sharpness are poor.

Arend, I have the same version and it performs admirably either on FX (24MP), DX (16MP) or even m4/3 (16 and 20MP).

Bjørn, according to "Thousand-one night", the first versions happended to use glasses that transmits blue too well, which would suggest the reason for the good transmission of UV.

Very understandable written and illustrated, Richard. Compliments.
-
Akira, indeed I just noticed from another thread you have exactly the same lens.
Richard, Erik & John, thanks for your comments. The flowers (artificial and real) were my test objects at home when trying non AI lenses on my A7 for the first time.

Thanks, John! this took me a long time to write. :o :o :o
from now on i am going to follow this format for all of my tear-downs. i hope the big pictures do not annoy you, it was requested by a lot of readers....
-
not thinking of doing any UV work, but i am curious about the lens' performance on IR. i am still interested in doing IR work in the future :o :o :o

This topic reminds me of my young days, when I used to dismantle my rich cousin's toys to see how they were inside.
Most often there were parts left when I tried to assemble them.
It used to make my aunt crazy.
My cousin didn't care as much as her.
lol
-
Rick: the 200 is OK in IR.
-
I have no intention of dismantling any lenses, but I do enjoy these very detailed descriptions of how it's done. Thanks for sharing.
-
But Richard, it is such a butt-ugly lens. I had one and quickly saved up for the much more sexy Nikkor 180mm.

OK, here is one for the cm version :o :o :o

Thanks Rick for the excellent write-up. I am having problem with silver nose 200mm f/4 Q's filter ring, so tight, unable to remove that. Some dirt and fungus there so have to somehow deal with that.
Haven't gone into the helicoids of the silver nose and the black nose 200mm f/4 Q nor the 135/2.8 Q.
Some day...
-
It was tough for me but patience and alcohol did the trick. Be careful not to scratch anything :o :o :o
what is the link to your blog? sorry I lost it, clear cookie.

I did not write up my 200Q black nose clean-up, no sense duplicating (and partially since I haven't gone into the helicoid) your excellent write-up.
