I really like his illustrations a true reference site - So nice that he has now taken the time to translate most of his site, a huge undertaking,,,

It is a quality pinnacle in the overwhelming wash of low-quality rubbish internet sites dealing with photographic lenses. I do wish reading the stuff was mandatory for any review site on lenses.

As already mentioned, the illustrations (with ray tracing) are extremely nice, and the worked-through examples facilitate the understanding of the underlying principles. The author invites the audience to learn and understand, it's as simple as that. Nothing is dumbed down, rather it is explained.

About 5 years ago, Pierre pointed (https://nikonandye.wordpress.com/2011/02/18/for-nikkor-and-lens-geeks-pierre-toscanis-website/) me to his work about the 80-200mm/2.8 lenses (http://www.pierretoscani.com/echo_telezooms_english.html) - which was a fascinating read about the evolution of lens architectures in this frequently used focal range. i.e. why Nikon was able to increase the AF speed over the generations. Plus an article about focal length and magnification. (http://www.pierretoscani.com/echo_focal_length.html)

It is indeed a great work and more than worthwhile to read (slowly).

Pierre Toscani's website is among my bookmarks.

He's not just a technician. He's also a great nature photographer. His mountain wildlife images are sublime.

I hadn't noticed there is an English version of the technical part of his website.

thanks, guys! i was looking for info on the 55mm af that i just bought yesterday and found this instead  :o :o :o

amazing how far he went just to create this!

You didn't see my reference to his site just the day before; Referring to the very same lens 55mm 2.8 and CRC and extension,,,,  What a coincidence ;) What are the odds of that,,, ;) Actually a bit scary  :o

Yes, he's been one of my favorite sites for years.  Really helps explain things in a digestible way.
