Title: Varanasi 2007
Post by: golunvolo on February 07, 2016, 20:02:58
Even thou I have to warn you "all this image were taken with a p&s" and lack IQ every other way. It has been tried to deal with in post-production with little to no success. Anyway, it was the first time I felt like my camera could not keep up with me and because of that -and a friendly, very accurate, advise to buy a Nikon camera :) - that got all what happened after that started. It has been a very pleasant journey so I decided to share those images with you.

It was a 3 weeks long travel through northern  India, Rajasthan region mostly. Mind-blowing country! It was my girlfriends birthday. I was traveling with 6 girls. That, in India, got a lot of doors open.

This long set was taken in Varanasi. I hope it doesn´t get too long and you can enjoy.
  #1 of course, a cow.

Colorful characters everywhere. That trident symbol, representing if I´m not mistaken, the "trident of Shiv"

#4 Kids. Open eyes, mostly smiling, very friendly in general. I am frustrated with the IQ... still one of the images I like a lot.

#5 The river Ganges gives the reason to be. Many, many, many different things can be happening on that river in a very little space and all at once!

Paco, the cow is my favorite because I have never seen such a cow :)
The last two with the bicycles are also nice! And the other two bicycle shots you just added ;)

The images are so nice that I would not have thought you took them with a P&S camera.

Very nice series, I've enjoyed all of them! Sometimes the restrictions of P&S allow us not to be seen or noticed and that opens the possibilities as well...

Image quality be damned, it's still a great set of pictures.
That cow really is something else!

Thank you for sharing this glimpse into Varanasi, it is very much enjoyed.

IQ doesn´t make it interesting, I think most will agree on that. There is a whole thread already here: http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,2488.msg30458.html#msg30458

Good gear, on the other hand, opens up possibilities. I miss many shots I could think but not take. As Akira pointed in another comment, I probably did get some shots because  I was using a p&s. I agree. Anyway, I bought a d200 as soon as I went back home. :)

I was able to print many images after the trip and put them in a nice leather album bought somewhere in India. This two images were printed in A4 size no problems.

I feel I look through a window into a world I do not understand.
I feel I know the elements but I guess their meaning is different in the context.

The cow in the first picture is very strong and different. It also appears huge.
I see men sitting by the water with ash and think the ash might be dead people burnt and now taken to the next level in a ritual.
The man in the yellow turban, does he say hello or does he say go away?
The naked man chalked white seems to consume mind altering sunbstances.
Why are the boys wet but do not look happy at all? Is it a game or is it something serious we cannot see?
The blue boat scene is a wonderful special postcard
And in the shot with the huge amounts of wood and bikes I ask myself if these are for sale and why does the man gaze so intensly into the camera?
The BW shot with the many birds in it is very interesting for me because it seems to roll all rules of geometrical composition sideways and still produce a harmonious result...

After all I do not give a dam about the camera. You are a great story teller, so you do not need extreme equipment.

A friend of mine won many photo contests although he switched from his big large Nikongear which he still owns to this:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Camera-3-Inch/dp/B009B0MYSQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454907208&sr=8-1&keywords=Canon+PowerShot+S110

I have seen HUGE prints from this camera and it is so small it fits into every pocket. You get a lot of shots with it you would never get with big equipment because the big cams often stand between you and your subject: intrusive, intimidating.

Thank you for telling the story!

Paco, first of all thank you for sharing this great series. Varanasi is "one of it’s kind" place in India. Yes, difficult to relate for many unless you have a local guide.  :)

#5 The river Ganges gives the reason to be. Many, many, many different things can be happening on that river in a very little space and all at once!
The center of staunch hinduism. River Ganges flows by Varanasi, which is considered so holy that people used to go to Varanasi at old age so that they can die with their body submerged in river Ganges. Civilization started in Varanasi as early as 11th or 12th century BC, based on Archeological evidence.
The Buddha is believed to have founded Buddhism here around 528 BC, at nearby Sarnath.

The cow, that’s a real “holy cow”.
I like the second shot more.

Colorful characters everywhere. That trident symbol, representing if I´m not mistaken, the "trident of Shiv"
Yes, the trident is “trident of Shiva”. And, the cloth-less priest has covered his body with holy ashes. Very very candid shots. Third and fourth priest shots are phenomenal.  Marijuana is easily available in Varanasi btw, given their religious excuse.

The boat shots are beautiful, especially the last one with blue boats.

#6 and always the city is alive and in movement
Rickshaws are like taxis in Varanasi. People hail a rickshaw for long or short distance commute  and they are everywhere.
Top view rickshaw shot is very cool and DSC01683 as well.

The other peculiar thing in Varanasi, are the alleys between hundreds of years old buildings. There are thousands of alleys in Varanasi and they almost all of them lead to river ganges.

Great storytelling photos. Cheers!

Paco, a very fascinating journey set to some glorious images. Some of the density of colour and detail is very impressive. Whatever PP you performed is also very effective. Mongo has to ask you exactly which P&S delivered these images ?

That is the way I felt during the whole trip. An eye opener if ever were one.

Thanks Anirban, Armando and Mongo for your input.

The camera was Sony Cybershot DSCW5. 5.1 megapixels: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/1762798950/sonydscw5 It was my faithful companion in Thailand, Maui, Perú and India before the upgrade.

I can do a dropbox original file if you are interested. I think almost any camera of smartphone can outshout this model by now.

Paco, this is an intriguing series of your visit to the holy place of India.  So far as you share the image on the web, the performance of the camera seems to be of no problem.

I like all of your images - they tell the story of another world new to me. Don't worry about IQ, that will in any event improve automatically the more photos you take
