Very interesting personality. First photo has too much empty space on right where as the subject feels like squeezed to the left; again that is just individual taste. I still like the first one between the two photos. Her stance makes the photo interesting for me.

I got that. I meant I like the original one than the cropped version.

Frank, I see the background too bright :

# 1 it makes it more present and therefore, distracting.

# 2 perhaps the metering mode was on matrix metering which was influenced by the bright background ? (I'am just wondering as there's no exifs displayed)

# 3 so the main subject is consequently dark.

My suggestion : using the center weighted metering would have enhanced the lighting of main subject and darkened the background.

What do you think ?

Francis: This is a friends edit.

He felt the BG must be brighter and the FG more contrasty.

I feel more like you feel. I share your impression. That is why I posted it into the critique section.

I will post the original edit ... mine ... here asap I get back into my office

This is my RAW development.

After your critique made me think I will now do another one with her a bit brighter and the BG fully blown.

But first I had another idea, to desaturate globally and not have such a harsh contrast from figure to BG

This last one is much better as the main subject is detached from the unsharp background .

Also thanks the correct lighting on man's face.

And yet another one taken in really bad light in the dark. I am very unhapy with the tones...

Perhaps the tones could be adjusted with PP (i am not an expert, though).

Anyway, we have sometimes to compromise when optimal conditions are not met.
