Located in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, California, Travel Town is a collection of trains in various stages of refurbishment. The trains are available to the public for inspection and to climb all over. I've been to travel town before and wanted to shoot something different than "just trains", (although trains are always cool). So I went for color ... then I spotted the layers of paint on partially sanded cars. Similar to clouds or a Rorschach ink blot test, I can see a variety of shapes in the images.
The subject from afar.

Gary, these are very good. I have a Bus graveyard near me. For a bus to get consigned to it... it has to be really old and in bad shape . I'll have to see if the Depot manager will give me access . Many thanks for the Inspiration, I needed that ;) . Unfortunately no trains around in similar situation :( . There used to be derelict , abandoned cars and trucks all over the place but people discovered the value of scrap metal a few year back .
Many thanks for posting,
Tom
Edit: after looking a few more times :) , number three is the one I would buy but number 1 looks more like something I would have shot. I'll work on escaping my box ;) .

Thanks Tom.

These images are fascinating. They appear to be canvases straight off the walls at MOMA or the Whitney. Like I could absolutely swear that I have seen #3 before somewhere on some gallery or museum wall.
Interesting and fun post.
Nicely seen abstractions.

Thank you Andrea. It was a lot of fun, whipping out the macro and framing up the images.

I'm speechless. I always thought fading paints & objects are interesting to photograph but never imagined they could be so fascinating. It indeed looks like an art exhibition. Post processing is phenomenal. Very inspirational! Thanks for sharing, Gary.

Yes, beautiful. Just looks like 'graffity'- art work.

hm, reminds me of a shooting I did in Ireland in 1989 or 1991. There was an abandoned public bath by the country road I was hitching and hiking. The "abstracts" sold well. There still must be some on the walls somewhere.
-
Gary they are all beautiful.
If I had to pick I would choose the last one! It's the blues and yellows that I like the most :)
-
Gary, these are the motives that never become boring. The multi-layered paints prove the longevity of these trailers.
-
Travel Town has become more colorful in the 30 years since my last visit. Nicely done.
-
Lovely abstractions. I've always enjoyed seeing the history of paint jobs when things get sanded down like this. I wasn't aware of Travel Town, I'll have to go check it out some time.

Thank you Anirban. My post is always minimal. Nothing more than I would have done in a wet darkroom. So some contrast, cropping, lighten/darken, dodging/burning.

Yes, they are like stratum found in the Earth. A very interesting observation.

It's free with some picnic tables to rest, chimp and/or have a bite.

I somehow missed this thread and only found it now. These abstracts are really good. I probably would not have dared to go for such colors but now I'll do.

YES! Go find some colors. I want to see your abstracts.

wonderful collection of creative abstracts. Mongo also loves # 1 for the lighting, colour and context. It would be great to have an eye that can see and record any of the essence in such subject matter. Very nice work indeed.
