Title: iMac Retina
Post by: Mike G on October 23, 2015, 20:29:14
I have at last got my sticky fingers on my sparkly new iMac and the screen bit is really good, also the machine just zips along at a fair old clip and everything seems very much quicker in use and even Lr opens in a few seconds.

I managed to get everything back due to having a Timecapsule backup it never lost a single file, super! Only took 5 hours to get up and running with the migration utility!

I think one benefit is a clean install of El Capitan helped, but I did forget not to update Lr & Ps, hey ho.

Twelve days of not getting any updates led to lots of updating when the machine was running, only took about an hour to get them onboard.

The species as follows:

IMAC 27"/CTO
PROCESSOR 4.0GHz QC i7, TB up to 4.2GHz
MEMORY 16GB 1867MHz DDR3L (2x8GB)
HARD DRIVE 2TB Fusion Drive
GRAPHIC AMD Radeon R9 M395 w/2GB
MOUSE Apple Magic Mouse
KEYBOARD AND DOCUMENTATION Apple WL Kybd+User's Guide-B COUNTRY KIT COUNTRY KIT-B

Just need to pay for it now.   :'(

Mike, That computer should be pleasantly fast.  Here's an interesting factoid that may apply to your new gem:

Keith, yep the computer is a step up in speed compared to my old one, I did have a look at your factoid link!

Fons, indeed the memory is user upgradeable, but with 16Gb I shouldn't need to in my circumstances! Time will tell.  ;)

Thanks chaps

The 27" version still has accessible RAM modules, but 16GB should be more than enough. I bought my Retina iMac with the standard 8GB and immediately replaced that with 32GB RAM I bought myself, much cheaper than the Apple memory upgrade prices.

It is a very very nice screen with the added bonus of a built-in computer  8)

The memory of the new iMac 27"can be upgraded to 64Gb RAM, OWC sells already the 16Gb RAM units. 64GB = $1195,00, a bit steep at the moment

I have a late 2012 model iMac with 1Tb fusion drive, next time I'll skip the fusion and get a 512Gb SSD.
I have the idea the fusion drive is not working as I want it to, I want to be in control what's on the SSD and what's on the HDD.
With large files with Photoshop and/or Lightroom, I find it slow. I guess the files are put on the HDD too fast. I have no idea how to check this.

Title: Re: iMac Retina can challenge D8xx
Post by: Bernard Delley on December 11, 2015, 14:39:39
the 27" screen with its 2880 pixels vertical is beyond the sensor resolution in the red and blue channel of a D8xx when imaging the full screen height onto full sensor height. (http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php/topic,91.0.html). While the green channel of D8xx does resolve each screen pixel, its beyond Nyqvist and thus aliased for red and blue.

Nice one and congrats!

I've been saving pennies for one of these myself for a while, but waiting for an updated 15". Looks like it could be happening soon.
