Title: Scotland (Killin) 2016 - part deux
Post by: David Paterson on October 09, 2015, 04:15:13
A narrow single-lane road crosses the mountains north of Loch Tay and the lodges. At the top of the pass there are a number of good subjects, and I've tried to give a flavour of the place. Sometimes deer can be seen, golden eagles, buzzards, kites. Yesterday there were only sheep.

I've been in Scotland once and loved the scenery (including the sheep staring). I really like your flavour!

I envision this place in 30 years. A dense and diverse forest. Abundant wildlife. Prosperous valleys where children play again because theit parents see a future. So let's hop in to take the pictures of this desert before the "Atlantic Rain Forest" kicks in again.

Another great book, bringing together many of my favourite authors:

Thank you all for looking and responding. I will post info on other nearby area from time to time.

Frank - I think I understand now - you are an incurable romantic.   ;D

Bjørn - the area mainly north of Killin is rich - if that's the right word - in hydro installations, incl. a small power station not far from the Lodges.

no. I see urgent necessity to restore watersheds. Not only in the South where people flee because their
natural support systems are not able to support them anymore ... with water ... with food .... with clean air ....
and in the aftermath with jobs and culture and future .

In Scotland the hills are barren for a while. They became so after sheep were introduced pushing back the forest.

now the sheep must be contained again. Wild boar and beavers and salmon and deer and wolf must restore the forest

Then all the other wildlife forms will return too.

Wonderful ruins

I really like the contrast of the dam vs the fantastic landscape

It would be nice to convince the lambs to come and model near the ruins :)

Frank - I hear what you say, but things are never really that simple; what you want is terribly difficult and complex to achieve. And never will be achieved with politicians in charge.

Scotland's deforestation began in neolithic times to provide timber for fires and for shelter; it accelerated when agriculture took hold, to clear the land for crops; but the biggest cause of tree-loss was in providing timber - oak, pine, and larch - for ship-building during England's prolonged wars with France and Spain, and to a lesser extent, Holland. It was people, not forests, which were cleared to make way for sheep, and later deer, on so-called sporting estates.

David. You are so right. It is not easy. It is complicated. But it is a great inspiring goal. Esp. for nature lovers
and Ecotourists.

I hear the Scotish regionals want a land reform to encourage sustainable agriculture.
I do not know if they really mean business. But I know that in parts of China they were quite successful putting
sheep into stables and tree cover back on the mountain tops. Slowing down the waters bringing people back
and prosperity and wild life in parts. Diversity.

Looks like your house could do with a bit of work Dave.  ;)

Yeah, but if it was down in Clapham where we used to live, it would still be worth about a million quid. And our builder said all it needs is a lick of paint.   8) 8)

I don't get to the dizzy heights of Clapham very often! In my neck of the woods you'd get about £320,000.  :D

I presume it's an old crafters house ruin, no doubt a sad story behind the reason for ruination! But I love those old ruins, so full of stories.
