Title: New grass
Post by: Björn Carlén on October 02, 2015, 23:05:50
I found this strange looking hairy grass this summer, not far from Stockholm.
Who can tell what it is?

Not a grass, but a Plantago. Probably P. lanceolata.

Thanks for pointing me in that direction. I'm having doubts as to the lanceolata, though. The picture is from the end of July - it must be blooming very late. Two months late. On the other hand I find nothing else resembling it. Also the soil may have been too wet for the lanceolata. I should have taken a lower shot to see the leaves - my mind was too much aesthetical, too little botanical.

This is a morphologically plastic species found on a wide range of soils, including coastal and damp substrates.

On my recent visit to Amsterdam, I saw plenty of very vigorous specimens of P. lanceolata growing alongside the canals.

There are no other candidate species if the photo was taken in Sweden.

Thanks! I'm so happy to find seemingly endless wisdom here.

Nah. Just needs to remind me about being trained as a botanist these many years ago.
