Title: Saved for Eternity
Post by: Bjørn Rørslett on September 17, 2015, 00:52:52
Just got a phone call from the National Library of Norway that one of my pictures is to be included in the National Image Collection and hence will be saved for all eternity along with other national treasures. Cool ...

They pulled the image from a recent picture exhibition of Norwegian Jazz musicians here in Oslo. Besides being reproduced in a super posh luxury book, it'll also go bit by bit into the National Archive and stay there forever.

When the curator of the Exhibition contacted me early this year, I had no idea of this later outcome. He was interested in a series of b/w promotional pictures of female artists Tine Asmundsen and Elizabeth Walker that I had shot many years ago on assignment for the recording company ECM. So we're talking stone age *film* technology here.

I'll browse my digital archive for more pictures from that promotional series, but for now, my "archived for ever" image has to do . Not only was I paid handsomely, the picture has been booked for another exhibition this autumn as well. A strange twist of fate to associate a nature photographer with jazz music, a music genre I at best have a lukewarm appreciation of :D

Proud of you!
As for the lukewarm feeling, free your mind and the jazz will follow ;)

Nah. My girl friend of 21 years standing has managed to haul me to a few jazz concerts over these years, but without much success seen from my point of view.

I watched Bjørn fall sound asleep at a jazz event one night! (I almost did too.)

But the photo inclusion in the National Library is way, way cool, so congrats Bjørn!!!!

That is Tine the bass player I met at the party yes? Whose American husband is the techie guy?? They were nice folks. And both interesting. He and I talked Raspberry Pi that evening.

Congratulations and well done (and deserved).  Sorry to hear that you have trouble staying awake for Jazz  ;) , :( . I remember spending a lot of time in Copenhagen in the 70's and trying to catch Oscar Peterson and  Ørsted Pedersen at every opportunity.  Having spent much of my time at the Heromsa Beach Lighthouse and Ronnie Scott's, I always found it interesting how popular Jazz was in Scandinavia.
Never too late to start enjoying Jazz  ;)

Here are the others used in the promotional series (F5 + 85/1.4, 20-35/2.8 ). Judge for yourself whether the best shot was selected.

As a side effect of that shoot, I became good friends with Tine and her American husband later.

Their combined natural human expressions in the first image and the quality of the image reflection makes the first image a winner.

A very classical framing probably bothers you  ;)

Bravo Bjørn.
I would have made the same choice among the set you proposed. Because of the framing and the difference of attitude between the two women. Maybe also because of the absence of direct contact with the camera, which makes the photographic process absent from the scene and the image more authentic (not sure this came through as I intended!).

Congrats to you Bjørn. As a nature photographer without a jazz-habit, this is very well done! But just goes to show that if you know how to shoot, you can shoot absolutly everything. :-)
The whole series is beautiful, quallity work as always!

Congratulation... ! :-)
I found out that the irony of life is that you are often rewarded for actions or things that weren't exactly your "cup of tea", while most of your efforts were on some other path..!!!

Congratulations Bjørn, I think the selected image stands out by the expression in the younger artists face and its reflection.

This is a great achievement, Bjørn!  Congratulations!

As fan of Nordic contemporary music (from Jan Garbarek to Lena Willemark to Nils-Petter Molvael), I'm excited to know about your assignment that yielded national treasure.  Do you remember the album for which you worked for?  The ECM website is under re-construction now, and the artist search function is not offered.

Congratulations! The radiant smile and the difference in the expressions of the two performers make the selected shot the best of the bunch, imho. Also the use of the reflection is masterful.

Great series and serious achievement! Life is full of surprises...

I like the last one best.

Not to mention my favourite record label ECM.

Love the reflection off the highly polished piano (I think).
