For some reason, it irks me that they are using the phone's inferior second camera.

It is so that they can frame the picture. They probably don't even realise it is inferior.

Another sign of its popularity is that "they" recently warned about using them during an upcomming thunderstorm.

A pity - Darwinian selection by thunder and lightening strikes could alleviate some of the problem ... :D

To be honest, I don't see what the fuss is about. Someone smoking near me, annoys me a great deal more than someone with a selfie stick.

They are trying to get a 'better' shot by using the stick...so that's good, right?
Of course, if their phone camera had a sufficiently wide lens, the stick wouldn't be as necessary.

Great photo Mike, tack sharp subjects doing something funny (at least to us photogs) with the background just in focus enough to put the subjects and their silly actions into context.
