Title: Rehousing vintage lenses
Post by: Akira on March 10, 2024, 22:33:51
This Chinese company rehouses vintage camera lenses to cinema lenses.  And this is a fascinating report by Media Division.

The cost for rehousing?  Don't ask me.   :)

Is this bad practice?  Biological contamination?

A set of the fingers can be used as a sensitive tool.   8)

The video has good production values.  It was interesting to see the laser engraving being done.  I once got a cinema-style lens for zone focus use on a still camera, but I couldn't deal with the 3 pound (1.5kG) lens on a little 350g Fuji XE-2 camera.

Just to rephrase the question above...

It's unacceptable practice :o :o :o

Richard, is it unacceptable because of:
- risk to the lens, or
- risk to the human?

It's very unprofessional, he won't be able to apply the grease evenly. He only just dab a few points on the helicoid. I was impressed until I saw what he did, something like a backyard mechanic would do in a third world nation :o :o :o
If he is not careful that same finger will end up in places where Grease should not be in. ::) if he picks his nose, his nostrils will be as smooth as voigtlander 8)

IMHO A dedicated stiff, very short haired brush of good quality is suitable to use. You don't want it to loose a hair in the threads so take care.
Thank you for sharing the link! A very high end rehousing compared to the hacks we usually do here on NG  :o 8)

1 day, when I have the place and money I will buy myself a CNC machine and a lathe, I will be able to manufacture barrels myself. And yes, I will never use my finger for lubricating helicoids :o :o :o only for picking my nose ::)
