I have a D300 that stopped autofocusing.  I tried a bunch of resets and figured it was hopeless.  Tried the upside down trick and it WORKED!!

Interesting trick, but what about AF focusing accuracy afterwards?

It is an old camera that had gotten very little recent use.  Pulled it out a few weeks back and AF was completely unresponsive.  After trying the upside down thing, seems to be right back to normal.  In normal use it seems sideways AF is common and upside down AF seems like a very unusual situation.  Still, I would think the cameras were designed so that AF would function upside down.  I'm just happy the D300 lives to see another day in focus :)
